Gripen E revealed:

NteZCBs.jpg?1

External changes from the previous gripens include an new IRST above the radar, some sort of ECM-looking dongles on the wingtips, two more weapon stations, single-wheel front landing gear, and rear landing gear that retracts into a fairing between the wings and fuselage instead of into the fuselage.

Internal changes include a new AESA radar, a new engine with 25% more thrust, and more internal fuel courtesy the redesign of the rear landing gear.

Mikka from Sako and I discussed future weapons procurement for Finland, including their F-18 replacement program (sidenote, in his accent "F-18" and "F-80" sound identical and are pronounced like the latter, leading to a hilarious misunderstanding for a while). I wonder if the Gripen E is intended for that tender.

Sweden at least is going to buy gripen E.  For political reasons they basically have to buy SAAB.

I think the days when SAAB could make credible and competitive fighters are over.  Gripen E is simply not in the same class as the JSF, and even with all the JSFs delays and budget overruns, IOC for gripen E will be well into the 2020s.  For a concept of an improved gripen that comes from around 2005, while the gripen itself is from the 1980s.

Fighters are just too damned expensive and complex for small nations to do anymore.  Even a little stunt fighter like the gripen E, which doesn't even have an indigenous engine, takes forever.

If a consortium of small, independent nations worked together; say Japan, Sweden and Israel, then maybe you'd have something.

Can we play a game where we throw random nations in a hat, pick 3 and the resulting nations have to develop a new world class fighter aircraft?

As long as we can get Mike Sparks to design the one for Iran, Zimbabwe and North Korea.

That one will we too easy, your average Zimbabwe citizen has hundreds of trillions of dollars, just imagine the treasury!

DSC_6402.JPG

1.5 hours flight time, 40-50 km max range, 15 kg weight, 3 kg warhead, accuracy - ~1 meter. This drone-killer is launched from container, 12 of which can be mounted on HMMWV.

   From Yuri Lyamin's blog:

http://imp-navigator.livejournal.com/466683.html

KADEX-2016, looks like Kazakhstan bought some Chinese UAVs. One of them on the photos - Pterodactyl-1 (Yilong-1), also known as Wing Long (variant of which, GJ-1 (GongJi), was accepted for service in PLA)

What a surprise. Boeing has been on it's knees sucking political dick to keep the SuperBug production line going for another year or two.  And the fucking Liberals are going along with it.

I expected a bit better from Singh, given his track record in the Military and as a Vancouver cop. Ugh.

AIM-9X doesn't care about your stupid countermeasures.

This marked improvement in ECCM is allowed by the AIM-9X's focal plane array seeker.  The earlier AIM-9 series (with which AIM-9X shares little more than the name) had reticle seekers, which allow only limited ECCM discrimination.
