Never quite understood the function of that V on the T-72 front. Can anyone explain?

Pretty sure it's just a splash/debris guard for the driver's hatch, LoooSeR's favorite tank, the T-64 also has it.

Rob griffin's has a horror story about ice riding up the front plate on chieftains during an iced-over river crossing and decapitating the driver, although I'm doubtful if it's really true. There isn't a huge difference in front hull geometry between chieftain and T-72 for the purposes of scooping water & debris up the front hull, although I'm not sure how the M1 gets away without a guard

I heard the exact same story, only it was in a CV90, so probably not true.

To be fair, their hulls are elevated so their floor would be above that of an Abrams.

But they appear to have about the same, or less clearance.

 

Tracks definitely leave more useable space inside the hull than 8x8 wheels.
