On August 21, 2023, the North Korean official news agency KCNA reported the first known launch of a North Korean-made cruise missile from a surface warship of the DPRK Navy. The missile was launched in the Sea of Japan from a new North Korean-built patrol ship with tail number "661", of the type referred to in the West as Amnok.

Hwasal-1 or -2 launched from NK new-ish boat.

The launched cruise missile is similar in appearance to the North Korean Hwasal-2 cruise missiles previously launched from ground-based mobile launchers and is a typical subsonic "Tomahawk-like" cruise missile. In launches in February 2023, these missiles demonstrated a range of up to 2,000 km. The launch from the escort ship "661" was made from an inclined four-container launcher hidden in the superstructure in the middle of the ship.

Concerning the escort ship "661", the KCNA reported that it "should begin maritime patrol service," that is, apparently, it is a new ship that is only now being commissioned. Presumably, this is the third ship (corvette) of the Amnok type built in the DPRK. The first two corvettes of this type have been observed in the DPRK Navy since 2015-2016. The ship has a standard displacement of about 1500 tons, a length of about 77-80 meters and low-radar signature architecture. The armament of the ship, in addition to launchers of anti-ship and / or cruise missiles of an unclear number (apparently eight), also includes a short-range anti-aircraft missile system, an 85-mm or 100-mm non-automatic artillery mount, two double-barreled 30-mm artillery mounts of the AK-230 type , two 14.5-mm multi-barreled machine-gun mounts, four five-barreled rocket/depth charges launchers, similar in type to the RBU-1200, and, presumably, two twin-tube 533-mm torpedo tubes.

It is worth noting that on June 23, 2023, the DPRK officially registered in the International Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) identification numbers for two new "frigates", designated, according to the North Korean application, as FFH-3 and FFH-4 , and which should be put into operation by December 2026. The previous similar acquisition of IMO numbers by the DPRK was in 2014 for two ships, designated FFH-1 and FFH-2, which are believed to be the first two Amnok-class corvettes.

North Korean media coverage of the launch and christening of the new submarine was extensive, including Kim Jong Un’s arrival at Sinpho to preside over the festivities. The new submarine was christened by Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, the “Hero Kim Kun Ok” with the unit number 841. While some features of the new submarine, such as the stern’s propulsion system, were blurred in videos and photos from the event, several new features were revealed. This includes the submarine’s missile bay containing ten missile tube hatches, set in pairs, with the foreword four being larger in diameter than the aft six, indicating the submarine will be fitted with a mix of weapon systems.

This is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the Department of the Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), on behalf of the Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems 11.0 (PEO IWS 11.0). PEO IWS 11.0 is looking for respondents to submit capability information on innovative, mature solutions for shipboard use to counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

Interested respondents should discuss projected performance against Group 3-5 UASs (e.g. probability of kill), key system performance parameters (range, engagement timelines, capacity, etc), Size, Weight, Power, & Cooling (SWaPC) requirements, operator / training requirements, concept of integration and integration requirements for surface ships (full kill chain), discussion of current production rates, a discussion of the adaptability of the proposed solution to changes in UAS systems (growth), and unit cost projections.
