  1. [Collimatrix here, I'm splitting this off and doing something I should have done a long time ago, which is have a thread dedicated to terror attacks and active shooters. News updates, professional analysis, that sort of thing. I know that these events are always very emotional and shocking, but let's try to keep it reasonable and level-headed. AEarly reports are usually godawful wrong. The whole truth may not come out for months. Anyone who tries to make a political point before the blood has congealed is a jackass.] So apparently there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas on the strip that just happened. We'll have to wait until useful information begins to trickle in and for 24-48 hours to go by before the false reports get corrected. Edit: The shaky mobile phone cam footage "sounds" kind of like automatic weapons fire. That is just a wild guess on my part. See second line.
  2. The Nixon "Southern Strategy" thing IS a myth. Witness the election results in the South for Carter and Clinton.
  3. Per the Alaska Daily News. Woman thanks bear for not eating kayak. Bear then eats kayak.

  5. The day may come in the not too distant future when humanity will become enslaved by their new robot overlords. But it isn't today!
  6. Let me guess (I have limited Internet access) the media in the first few hours/day tried to pin this shooting on Trump while wishing the shooter wore a #MAGA hat, until it was discovered the shooter had different motives that were apolitical/personal. Forcing the media to promptly bury the story.
  7. With respect, I'd think someone living in Michigan of all states should understand the destruction wrought upon the US manufacturers (and their employees) by exporting jobs overseas.

    General news thread

It is completely asinine and there is no logical reason for those values other than idiots haven't learned from the last real estate bubble.

$600,000 to a million dollars. (Price goes north fairly fast) And that is for an older house, say, a 1950s to 1970s rambler. New construction in the city proper is either a condo in a mixed use development or one of the new three story box "townhouses". Real estate market has cooled somewhat from the ten party bidding wars.

A big issue with Seattle cops is that something like 80 or 90 percent of them choose not to live in the city. And who would with the real estate being as high as it is. And with the growth this region has seen without the adequate build up in infrastructure, it means longer and longer commute times for a job where you are literally spit on every day. 20 cops isn't a huge number off hand. The issue is finding qualified recruits to fill those vacancies.
  11. So Justice Kennedy is retiring? Well I guess that means the American Left can stop pretending to care about illegal immigrant children being detained and can move on to the current crisis du jour.

  13. Since we don't have a general, all purpose archaeology topic, let this be a repository for all matters involving the science which has been made cool by whip-cracking, mummy-fighting, big-breasted, relic-hunting adventurers. And the real life stuff that is far more interesting.

    North Korea, you so crazy!

U.S. identifies North Korea missile test site it says Kim committed to destroy https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-usa-site/u-s-identifies-north-korea-missile-test-site-it-says-kim-committed-to-destroy-idUSKBN1JH02B The missile engine test site that President Donald Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had committed to destroy is a major facility in the western part of the country that has been used for testing engines for long-range missiles, according to a U.S. official. ... A U.S. official identified it on Wednesday as the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground, saying North Korea “has used this site to test liquid-propellant engines for its long-range ballistic missiles.”

    United States Gun Control Megathread

So the good guy with a gun who shot the bad guy with a gun who was shooting and carjacking people in a Walmart parking lot... Is a pastor. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/crime/pastor-who-shot-suspect-in-tumwater-carjacking-spree-tells-his-story/ Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition! George isn’t just the pastor of the Oakville Assembly of God Church. He describes himself as a trained EMT with the town’s fire department, a certified gun-range safety officer and a licensed concealed-carry holder who has trained for active shooter situations. ... They followed Day outside, watching as he tried to take more vehicles. At some point, George drew his own firearm. He watched Day shoot twice into the driver’s side of a vehicle, critically injuring a man, and start to move toward where George thought his family might be. George got into a position “to have a safe shot” at Day. Day tried to take another car. George shot him. Day fell to the ground. George told Zamora to stay with Day while he retrieved a medical kit from his own vehicle, and administered aid to the injured man in the car. The pastor's account of the event is here. https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4546436/Pastor-Release-Tumwater-Shooting.pdf It's gratifying to see folks not only preparing by legally carrying a concealed handgun but also having a medical kit on hand which is every bit as valuable.

    Syrian conflict.

An article from 1991 detailing Syria's alliance with the United States and its Coalition partners during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1991-03-12/news/9101220963_1_syria-president-hafez-assad-peacekeeping-force Couple of interesting quotes. As one Western diplomat observed, superpower relations with Syria were a zero-sum game: Any gain for Syria was a Soviet gain, and any gain for Israel was an American gain. But Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev`s refusal to supply Syria with sophisticated weaponry, and his decision to allow a mass migration of Soviet Jews to Israel, caused Assad to rethink his position and to begin cultivating the West-especially the U.S. ... The U.S.-Syrian rapprochment is controversial in the U.S. Many Americans remember Assad as the ``butcher of Hama,`` the leader who laid siege to the city of Hama in 1982 and killed at least 10,000 residents in his bid to wipe out the Muslim Brotherhood that opposed him.
