At what point does a caliber stop becoming small and the velocity stops becoming high? Just wondering of there was an agreed upon definition. And if not, it's the perfect chance to whing over minutiae.

It's at this point that I want to share the story of my brother's girlfriend's daughter's Chihuahua Mac'n Cheese. Don't ask me why a three year old was allowed to name a $1,500 "show quality" dog or why they had to spend that much on something whose highest and best purpose is to feed snakes. I came to learn that Chihuahuas are notorious for having a weak bladder and you can't house train them. They are also stupid as evidenced by the time it crawled up to sleep with me on the couch and then, in the middle of the night, pissed on the pillow I was sleeping on. So we/they had a dog that you couldn't leave inside and you couldn't leave outside because it would die from the elements or be eaten by a raccoon. So my brother built a heated, lighted dog house for Mac'n Cheese (and their other two dogs). One night we had freezing rain at temperatures around 34 degrees. The other two dogs (a mutt and a Cockapoo) were smart enough to go into the heated dog house. Mac'n Cheese stood by the back door in the freezing rain, waiting to be let in and died of exposure. The United States has been fortunate to date that we haven't really had to rely on using women in combat - or near combat - roles (legends about Molly Pitcher aside). Although in our two biggest major industrial wars, World War 2 and the Civil War the use of female labor was a crucial factor whether it was "Rosie the Riveter or the Midwest farm wife harvesting wheat with a McCormick Reaper. As for the present, the Genie (whether you dream of her or not) is well out of the bottle with women fighter pilots, Secretaries of Defense and fuel truck drivers (vis a vis Private Lynch). Given that our immediate enemies are a bunch of fundamentalists aiming to recreate the Seventh Century Caliphate, I'm not sure if using women to fight them is a net positive or negative in terms of demoralizing or enraging Haji, not that I give a damn what they think.

As for purebred dogs, I feel that it is good to continue the lineage of useful working breeds. My family has Irish Wolfhounds which are magnificent creatures with a history that is older than the Roman Empire. At my feet as I hunt and peck on my phone are a pair of rescue Akitas that are my wife's and whose breed have a similar fascinating history from Japan.

Question since I've seen so many recent posts about the Beretta 92F over at TFB. Why is a slide safety/decocker ifeature so derided by gun officionados? I get why the 92F is hated since it replaced the Holy 1911 and fires the 9mm Euro-pellet. But inevitably the issue of the safety placement is brought up which draws collective nods and affirmations of "Ayup. Slide safety bad." And I know there were issues with accidental discharges with the M9s safety/decocker. But I chalked that up to poor armory maintenance on beat-to-hell guns. I own a 92F and while there are issues I have with it, the safety is not one of them. It's ergonomic and right there by the thumb, ready to go, with just a flick. On the other hand (get it, hand?) my paws are fairly large which has always stood me good when handling something as large, curvy and voluptuous as a sexy Italian handgun. So are the complaints about the Beretta's slide safety more a problem with 1911 guys with small... erm... decockers?

I've heard of it. Haven't read it. I'm sure a major theme will be how the Western Allies were consistently short on infantrymen from D-Day on.

I'd be curious to know too if that ever develops. I always just assumed it fell along the lines of the 7.7mm being bigger, more "accurate", has better "stopping power" and allows ammo commonality with their light and medium machine guns. When you have a bolt action rifle you aren't delivering suppressing fire (SMLE mad-minute excepted) and you want your rifleman's shot to count (using military wisdom of the day). I like the 6.5 Arisaka. Mine is pleasant to shoot and I know that postwar a lot of guys liked to Bubba it up into a deer rifle since it possesses those ballistic qualities which were enough to kill the critter but not ruin the meat. At least this is what I was told from the guy whom we bought ours from in the early 1990s, rescuing it before he had a chance to chop up the barrel and stock.
