Closest to confirmation we’re likely to get regarding the Elbit MT30 turret.

    https://asiapacificdefencereporter.com/selection-of-redback-ifv-confirms-the-importance-of-test-trials/

'All of the leaks had a certain consistently to them: namely that the Redback was proving to be exceptionally reliable and robust.  This in turn was probably related to the use of rubber tracks – more accurately steel mesh coated in rubber – which greatly reduced vibration when driving across almost all surfaces.  They also proved to be more durable and easier to repair than conventional steel link tracks used by the Lynx.

This has never been confirmed – and probably never will be – but there was also a suggestion that the Redback had an advantage in the critically important blast test requirements.  Both vehicles passed but apparently one of them did so with a greater margin of safety.  Hanwha used Israel’s Plasan – a world leader in armour protection – to develop their solution.

This might be a coincidence, but APDR has seen evidence of Redback undergoing preliminary blast testing in Israel with a number of 155mm artillery shells being detonated near a test vehicle, with impressive survivability results.'

not precisely the same way, but it seems that Redback did to Lynx, what Boxer did to AMV35.  Demonstrate superiority via an unscripted method,  Boxer driving off after a blast test in Vic,  Redback doing something after a 155mm shell test, overseas.

Koreans claiming that some claiming that redback was a bit more expensive but better in the evaluation.

More expensive, I doubt,  better in evaluation is high likelihood, if only for the rubber tracks all the way through evaluation.  And the EOS/Elbit goodies

Comments in ADM and The Australian imply that the cost of Lynx was very close to Redback and directly state that Redback was preferred on capabilities.

If CASG had any sense, which is an open question, redback would be delivered with mk44S. Minor cost differential now, for Super40 later, if needed.
The reason for selecting 30x173 over 35x228 was ammo capacity; super40 keeps that capacity with improved performance over 30mm if the threat requires it.
It won’t happen, because it would be too sensible, just as specifying Mk30-2/ABM as the cannon armament for L400-3 was too sensible.
Edit: mk44S it is. Good job by those who decided.

the better vehicle for Australia won,  but I suspect at the end of the day, it all came do to price, price and price.

somehow I have visions of diggers manually unlinking  NATO 30x173 and relinking them to Rheinmetall 30x173 either at base or on patrol.   Cause thats what the USA came to the party with.

Labor being Labor. As simple as that.

The defence strategic review may green light a small buy of IFV to save face, but I’m not hopeful.

In what amounts to one of the most prolonged examples of capability edging, we’re reentering the decision/announcement window for 400-3.

RUMINT has some interesting points of speculation, noting that this is a mix of industry, CASG, AHQ, & think tank chatter.

    Options reportedly discussed:
    - a reduction of 400-3 to 100 vehicles, with 400-4 being a follow-on buy of an unspecified quantity.
    - up to 1/3 of of the procured number of vehicles, whatever that number is, being fitted for, but not with a turret, having a RWS instead to reduce costs. Additional turrets would be procured during -3 sustainment.
    - all ‘manoeuvre support vehicle’ variants being deleted, with the capability need being met by the Heavy Armoured Capability System M1150 breachers & M1110 AVLB.

Time will tell, but the predicted post-election turbulence has come to pass.

The minister for defence/deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has recused himself from the selection process, given the implications for his electorate. The selection will be proceeding regardless of the Defence Strategic Review.

Majority supports troops and like idea of Ukraine getting fucked. Propaganda from our state medias doesn't really played role in this as much as some people think. Ukrainians politicians and media people turned a lot of Russians from them by their mouths and cameras, or just by having an access to internet. Some people view this as undoing of what commies did with Russian people, drawing a border in places where it shouldn't be and such.

Kal reacted to Sturgeon in The Northrop Jet Fighter Family: A Pictorial History
Thanks to this Secret Projects thread, we have some images of the transitional forms of the Northrop fighter lineage which help connect the T-38/F-5/etc to the Cobra/Hornet. As is fairly well known, the this transition begins with the Northrop P-300, which is still firmly grounded in the Freedom Fighter. This is an important member of the family, which I left out of my original posts:

This is a configurable study model of the late version (A43) of the P-300 (seemingly evidenced by the very difficult to read nameplate). Clearly visible is its resemblance to a high-wing F-5, but you can also see in the belly shot a very clear view of the flared out body-intake configuration that would follow the design all the way through the P-530 and YF-17, which was much more subdued in the F-18:

In fact, the early P-530 looks much more like the P-300A43 than it does the later P530s:

Note that by May '67 they haven't even ditched the single tail yet (that wouldn't happen until the summer of 1968)!

By the end of the P-530 the aircraft gets looking very much like a proto-Cobra:

You can see that in this very "Starfightery" series of designs, one of the big distinguishing features visually is caused by the location of the gun. Not in front of the pilot like in the Cobra and Hornet, but below the pilot:

Speaking of guns, evidently the armament of two M39s in lieu of an M61 was being considered as late as 1973/4:

The photos in that SP thread really clearly illustrate the evolution from the F-5 to the Hornet very well, and there's even a handy visual outline:

    But what's this? It mentions a single-engined P-610? Indeed:

Russia can produce 65nm chips,  sure that not economically competitive use of silicon, for digital circuitry, but it is still an economically competitive for mixed (digital and analog combined) circuitry.  which is appropriate for general military use.

Once chips need to communicate with the outside world at outside world voltages, the older silicon remains relevant.

new 45-65nm fabs are still being built.

Rheinmetall is basically in Qld's labor premier's electorate, and has been keenly supported by the Qld premier, as a Qld I have had the impression that Dan Andrews ignored Redback until very recently whereas, Annastacia has strongly supported the Lynx the entire bid.  Fed minister of defense is indeed about 2 electorates away from Rheinmetall, so ready commuting distance, but nothing too special.  To tour the facility would be easy for him, so Lynx is far more real for his reality.

The minister of defense could not have avoided noticing the difference in support from the respective state governments for Lynx and Redback.  And would be far more confident that Qld would deliver, closer to on time, and on budget than Vic.   But the bigger issue is brand.  Rheinmetall is strong brand, who is Hanwha?

Having said that, by the numbers Redback should have superior ride (rubber band tracks have about double the tension as steel segment tracks, extra road wheel, wider stance, more depth due to suspension not having torsion bars reducing space), so anyone going for ride will immediately prefer redback, Ceteris paribus
