M1A2 vs MiG-25. My friend (he's that guy with the camera) said that they were surprised to see it actually looking good after this. Obviously it was ruined, but it looked in OK condition for being run over by a 70 ton tank (I know the official weight of the M1A2 is much lower than that, but they carried more than average loadout there).

Oh, that's what you meant. The T-34-76 had a periscope for observation. If you really wanted to stick your head out, there was an opening in the hatch meant for flares or grenades that you could look through, not to mention the gap between the hatch and the roof.

About side armor layout of the Armata HUTP:

*claims that T-14 side armor is same as previous T-xx had*
"See layers - it is plywood. A well knowledged people explained long time ago [ukrainian tank experts and tank 'experts']. Shot - pyrotechnics by Mosfilm, and therefore there is no rocking. There is no proper rocking after shot in the movies. And the rocking of the hull - tank was pulled by another tank with a rope (as in the "Beware of the Car" movie) ....
See damper/suspenion flange surface? This is where actual side plate is, and it is thicker than on old Ts. Side armor was thickened outwards with layered barrier. And now is not the thickness that determines the resistance of armor. "

        (...)

"....and "reasonable protection of side projections" or so-called "thick side" we had in 187, Molot and other "Perspective" tanks from the [soviet] times. The truth is it didn't covered entire side, and only the front part.
By the way - this speaks in favor of the rear-engined layout of the tank, it is not necessary to stretch a thick side armor protection to the entire length of the machine."

       (...)

"In T-14 crew is well covered by the frontal armor and from the side view crew compartment have small projection, easily covered by armor and does not get into the zone of highest probability of hitting [from the side as well]."

       (...)

"even in urban areas of Grozny prepared, knowing where to shoot chechens, it was necessary to organize 5..7 penetrations, to knock out the T-80 from action. A irrecoverable losses - a couple of vehicles on the unit. Including landmines.
And in the Great Ukraine, in the open fields, loss of AFVs has already exceeded 260. And irrecoverable losses..."

One comrade commentary about Zvezda video from inside of T-14, and discussion.
    "....
By the way, note - the image on the monitor is practically black and white. And a commnader's second monitor - a view of the target from panoramic sight - is also [black and white]. It is worth remembering the conversation about the properties of the human eye and target recognition. Note the zoom levels, all of which is provided by optics rather than a digit. Digital processing programms also present... Fans of the "megapixels counting" should learn ergonomics...

And there is a lot of "accelerators/simplifiers" of target finding, aiming, firing. Therefore, the opening of the fire is two times smaller than on previous generation.
You're right - the monitors can be switched to display different information, such as observation cameras, radar image, change channels [day/night/thermal], duplicate the panoramic sight, or move to the commander's monitor video feed from gunner's sight, shooting from panoramic sight and etc. .. Previously, tank commander formed a picture of the battlefield studying environment with his "legs", now he have too integrate information from different sources.

By the way the devices [monitors, crew information/control systems] themselves - are unified. And when you change the weapon module, only programm needed to be replaced."

"....and you can sleep in it. On some video there was a "pillow" on the wall behind gnner. It is for the head in position of resting.
Of course you have to be retrained, but if you master the instrument - there will be no barriers.
And rocking - momentum/impulse from the gun is not "childish", line of fire - high, suspension was disabled. When shooting on the move with suspension working, there is no rocking. Target autotracker does not lose lock-on after a shot. Therefore, the second shot can be done quickly."

"Driver wheel have a comprehensive indicator. Especially useful when reversing. Apart from slow backwards speed, there is transport gear. Maximum speed - 35-40 km/h. No need for higher reverse speed.  Steering wheel position - changable. A monitor is also mounted on the instrument panel, and it moves, too."
  9. Tank You
Mohamed A reacted to LoooSeR in GLORIOUS T-14 ARMATA PICTURES.
    "....
Correctly. Driver's wheel also can change positions. "Cheburashka" [gunner input device/joystick] have variable functionality (control of gunner sight/panoramic sight), like monitors. E.i. if tank commander wants to take control of the gun, it is done with a single click and he will have 100% same controls as gunner have, and vice versa."

"Problem is not in the lack of buttons, but their number and location. Tank is not a plane and less buttons are needed, but even in tanks, engineers manage to design and locate the consoles so that you need to have octopus agility to quickly find anything and press it.
Look at the T-80 - on commander station - horizontal turret traverse mechanism. WHAT FOR ?! It hinders ... but the demands were - melee guidance ...   And for the sake of what? And even in Oplot it remained in place. "Super modern tank"... some even compare it with T-14.

In the T-14 the number and location of controls is optimized and it is located in the so-called "motor field" - easily accessible without changing position. And information providing means are located in the frontal arc. The field of view of human eye, though it is large, but in the periphery, "the resolution" is extremely low. You can notice the presence of the object, its movement. Understanding what it is writen or shown there - impossible. So it is necessary to bring it in the center of the view field. Hence the dependence of the size of the monitor on the distance from the eye. To change the viewing angle changing optical zoom is enough. And for observation of the surroundings, moving head or cheburashka [joystick] does not matter.

Although .. again - despite the "easy" controls, it requires changes in the algorithms of the crew work. Of course nobody forbids from geting out with binoculars.  "

"    but in general - a lot is still to come   A lot of free pace in the compartment. Wall is still empty, almost. TC have only communication unit to his right. You can cram a lot of things. In 15 years crew will "flow into" to their places likenow in T-series, Monitos will be even on the ceiling

...and more about the habitability - air supply grille is clearly visible in upper the front and air "extractor" in the rear."

About how to press buttons and touchscreen when moving:
"Body needed to be fixed so that the controls would not became a body weight support. Otherwise, you will not "control" much. A typical example - rally cars, planes and so on... If the Pilot will hold the steering wheel, he will not steer well.
Earlier in AFVs, people rested with their "backs" in the seat and foreheads on sights or observation devices.  A stable position with free hands. But it have a lot of restrictions... TC - holding on to the handle of the observation device - had problems with pressing something. He had to distract himself from observing, lose contact with the area....
In the T-14 position is close to the race cars drivers position. You can rest with legs and back. On top of that, you can tied yourself to the chair in so-called controlled stoop pose, when the back is bent slightly at the waist, shoulder and head are vertical (vestibular system works best).
E.i. crew member is fixed, hands-free, OBSERVATION! is not limited. If attached to the chair, then legs become free, to work with pedals, for example."

Interview with Chief designer of Armata HUTP - Andrey Terlikov.

    Summary:
    - T-14 in Zvezda documentary (that will be shown this sunday) have all features that serial vehicle should have.
    - Tanks from parade were moved to factory to complete some parts, vehicles are in the process to be transfered to Army. currently they are going through final acceptance.
    - Officers of military acceptance mastered tanks on/at UVZ facilities.
    - About crew qualification to use Armata-based vehicles - "...in general, "Armata" imposes requirements for the crews and maintenance staff at the level of development of modern technologies, in the same way as at the time of the T-34, and then the T-55 and T-72 - for the period when they were launched into production."

"In the last 10-15 years we have seen a certain stagnation in the development of modern main battle tanks. Developers are at a crossroad. This happened due to many factors. Most important of these is the limit of modern technology to ensure the invulnerability of the machine. Anti-tank ordnance achieved great abilities, so that modern technology does not allow to dramatically improve protection in a traditional layout, while maintaining reasonable weight and size of the machine. Let me remind you, the weight of western tanks in the latest versions is close to 70 tonnes, which severely limits their opportunities in terms of tactical mobility.
All designers are looking at exit out of this deadlock. We found our own - uninhabited combat compartment [turret and what is under it], will dramatically increase the security of the crew and the internal parts, while remaining within acceptable limits for the size and weight (slightly more than 50 tons) and has a reserve for further upgrades."

    - about 152 mm gun - "This option is also being worked on, the modular design of the machine allows it. If there is a corresponding decision of the customer, we can make tank with that weapon."

    - "When the wait for "their response" to the "Armata"?
The cycle of development of the new tank today can reach eight years. Deep modernization of the previous generation of tanks can be carried out faster. There are two ways. If Germany decides to develop the project MBT Revolution, then in the next year or two, you can wait for the first vehicles of this type.
The issue in the choice of strategic direction. One of the seriously discussed options in the West - a modernization of the existing fleet of tanks with a parallel transition to a remotely controlled robotic machines. We are also studying the prospects of this direction."

    - Remotelly controlled Armata - "Armata is still crewed tank, although its use in unmanned variant is realistic. But I believe that future UGV will look differently."

The whole of the Middle East seems to have been in slow freefall since Iraq 2 (electric boogaloo). It doesn't help that the standard approach from the international community whenever things spill over to a new country is "hey, we don't really like whoever is in charge anyway. I know, let's bomb them and support Al Qaeda the plucky rebels!"
After a while it begins to seem like a deliberate strategy to fuck up the middle east completely for the next few generations.

As for Africa, I will note that the same dynamic gave us Libya and Somalia. Not seeing too much of the same trend for the rest of the continent, however.
