LostCosmonaut
Hasn't been the greatest few weeks for naval aviation, has it? Last I heard the Russians gave up on flying shit off the Kuznetsov and just moved their -33s and -29Ks to a land base in Syria.

Welp, no catapult on the Kuz means they can fly a hell of a lot heavier loaded off land.

Not looking good for the pilot at this point, if they know where he went down and haven't recovered them by now. http://www.stripes.com/news/marine-corps/f-a-18c-jet-crashes-off-japan-efforts-to-recover-pilot-underway-1.443092
LostCosmonaut
Honestly, using the Kuznetsov in combat just seems like a bad idea. They should have either; Used it as a training carrier like the Chinese are doing so they can get experience in naval aviation before/if they build a full size carrier. Sold it to someone and used the money from the sale (and saved operating costs) to get another Project 885 or 955.

The engine falling off was caused by a 'catastrophic engine failure'. "It appears that the engine began breaking down from the inside, eventually cracking the protective casing around it and detaching from the plane." Uh oh.
