"Tupolev" will begin the production of prototypes of the PAK DA

Quote

Moscow. 28th of February. INTERFAX.RU - Tupolev will soon start manufacturing the first prototypes of the long-range Far Aviation Complex (PAK DA), an informed source in the aviation industry told Interfax.

"Kazan Aviation Plant (KAZ, a branch of PJSC Tupolev), which was determined by the parent manufacturer of PAK DA, began preparations for the creation of the first prototypes of this aircraft," the source said. Earlier, First Deputy General Director of PJSC "Tupolev", KAZ director Nikolay Savitskih announced the beginning of development work to create a long-range aviation complex for long-range aviation.

"At present, the technical appearance of the aircraft is finalised, a contract has been signed to carry out experimental design work on the construction of prototypes. The PAK DA project will give factory a contracts to complete in the coming decades," N. Savitskih said.

As reported, in 2009 the design office of the company "Tupolev" (part of the UAC) signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for research work under the code "Messenger", as a result of which a draft PAK DA was prepared.

In January 2018, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said that this year the Tupolev Design Bureau is embarking on an active phase of designing a prospective long-range aviation complex. According to him, tests of PAK DA can begin in 2023-2024.

Rogozin noted that the aircraft will be made according to the "flying wing" scheme. "Even outwardly, it will not be similar to our understanding of the traditional appearance of the aircraft, it is a flying wing, a plane of the 21st century, but this is the next step," the deputy prime minister said.

Earlier, the head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Yuri Slusar, said that in mid-2020 it was planned to create a prototype PAK DA and begin its flight tests. "The plane will be made and will be in the skies in the mid-20s," Slyusar reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kazan aircraft plant.

In July 2017, Slyusar told Interfax that the corporation had agreed with the Ministry of Defense of the form of a prospective aircraft. The director of PJSC Tupolev, Alexander Konyukhov, told the agency that the rollout of the first prototype PAK DA is planned in 2021-2022.

Earlier, Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov, said that PAK DA can make the first flight in 2025-2026, and the start of mass production is planned for 2028-2029. He stressed that the long-range aviation complex under development of the long-range aviation should carry as many weapons as possible, be invisible and use any airfields.

Saudi Arabia signed an agreement on the purchase of another 48 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters

Quote

According to BAE Systems, in a notice to the London Stock Exchange, on March 9, 2018, Saudi Arabia signed an intergovernmental Memorandum of intent (MOI) with Britain on the purchase of another 48 Eurofighter Typhoon multifunctional fighter produced by BAE Systems, in addition to the 72 already received. As expected, the memorandum was signed on the last day of the three-day visit to London of Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman Al-Saud at a meeting with British Defense Minister Gavin Williamson in Northholt in northern London.

This memorandum is not a contract, but, apparently, it shows that the conclusion of the contract will follow in a relatively near future. It is reported that negotiations on commercial terms continue.

Apperently it is even a little bigger than Iskander

The video footage shows something falling off the rear before the rocket ignites - I suspect that the darker cone at the rear of the missile is only there to reduce drag while it's being carried, and the new weapon is closer to the iskander size after it's been launched

Is it just me or does Iskander look baller as fuck?

Fuck yes. Kinzhal is an even more baller name, though.

100% genuine conversation that led up to Kinzhal:

"Ivan, let's try to make MiG-31 useful in strike role"

"Just strap an Iskander on it"

"Ivan, you're a genius."

The thing is, Ivan is a fucking genius.

Can you imagine how hard the America-rah-rah crowd would be creaming their pants if a video came out showing a Standard missile hanging off of an F-15?

But Russia did it so it is dumb jingoistic posturing.

(Russia, please do more of this instead of dumping nerve gas in british towns)

An F-15E could handle the weight of an SM-3 or SM-6 (they weigh less than a GBU-28, which the F-15E was rated to carry), the actual volume might be a problem though. F-15+SM-3 would be a worthy successor to the ASM-135.

We already put Standards on our planes.

I stumbled across this old article: https://www.defenceaviation.com/2008/07/pakda-a-russian-stealth-bomber.html

Is the model shown there just an older design stage or something alternative?

The South Korean spotter, under the name Fangnook, distributed the photographs of the first prototype of the South Korean reconnaissance-strike unmanned aerial vehicle of the long range, known under the designation KUS-FS (Korean Unmanned System), which he had made on March 16, 2018. These are the first known images of the flying prototype of this UAV in open sources.

Interesting rumors about Russian UCAV programs.

Quote

Russia is expected to employ a UCAV in action following the recent announcement by the defense minister that their deliveries “are forthcoming” and the fact that Syria provides a useful testing ground for modern weapons. Deputy minister for weapons procurement General Yuri Borisov said that four UCAV systems that were “able to solve tasks in tactical, operative, and strategic depth” continue in development, after the ministry had closed down “several other projects.” Apparently, these include the RAC MiG Scat unveiled in 2009 and a pilotless version of the Yakovlev Yak-130 armed jet trainer from Irkut. One of the surviving four programs is believed to be a pilotless version of the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter. The respective contract was awarded in 2011, calling for flight tests to commence in 2018.
