Am I the only one who is bemused over the nonstop coverage of Hollywood producer Harvey Whatsisfuck and the SHOCKING allegation that Hollywood starlets are preyed on sexually by studio big shots? The practice has only been going on for over a century (and before that on Broadway, etc). And don't get me wrong, the guy should be sued and prosecuted if possible. I'm just sort of amazed at how it is overshadowing real news stories like Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, Houston, Florida, Santa Rosa fires, North Korea...

Holy hell media, you were out guns ablazing that Trump hated brown people in Puerto Rico and - instantly - it isn't a story anymore.

Which leads me to believe that either the recovery efforts there are doing well, or CNN, MSNBC, New York Times et al don't think that the plight of brown people is newsworthy, at least not compared to 10-20 year old stories about casting couch exploits of a producer and female celebrities.

Like kids in high school, these people are in their own little world, and the Prom King just got expelled.

According to Gulf News, things just went tits-up in Iraq:  http://gulfnews.com/news/mena/iraq/iraqi-kurdish-forces-exchange-fire-in-kirkuk-1.2106453

The Guardian have the story too now, looks like a real thing:  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/16/iraqi-army-advances-kirkuk-kurds

The Kurds are claiming it has gone hot:

Kurdistan Security Council has said in a statement that "Peshmerga Forces have destroyed at least five US Humvees used by PMF [Popular Mobilization Forces.]"  The following is the full text of the statement.

"At approximately 2330hrs Iraqi forces and Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces advanced from Taza Khormatu in South Kirkuk in a major, multi-pronged operation intended to enter the city and take over K1 abase and oil fields.
At approximately 0230hrs they attacked Peshmerga Forces from two fronts in the Taza-Kirkuk intersection and Maryam Bag bridge, both in South of Kirkuk, using US military equipment, including Abrams tanks and Humvees.
Significant Forces have also been deployed to Maktab Khalid intersection in South West of Kirkuk as part of the operation.
Peshmerga Forces have destroyed at least five US Humvees used by PMF. Peshmerga will continue to defend Kurdistan, its people and interests. This was an unprovoked attack following days of Iraqi military deployments to Kurdistan’s borders"

Umm... Kurds have similar equipment to Iraqi army, most of which is Western-supplied (US, Germany, France, UK).

Iraq is on the UN special committee for decolonization. Looks like self-determination is wonderful, until it's 'your' territory that's trying to break away

At night, from 15 to 16 October, an Iraqi operation began to restore control of Kirkuk and its oil fields, which were actually captured by the Kurdish regional government in the summer of 2014 amid the collapse of government forces in the north of the country during the IS offensive.

The operation involves the most efficient forces of Baghdad - the 9th Armored Division of the Iraqi Army, the special forces of the anti-terrorism service, the rapid reaction forces of the federal police of the Iraqi Interior Ministry, the brigades of the Shiite militia al-Hasd al-Shaabi.

According to reports, after clashes with Iraqi forces, the Kurdish Peshmerga in some areas near Kirkuk dropped its positions and fled. Even the Kurdish media report that Kurdish residents of Kirkuk are trying to stop the peshmerga's retreat from the city. To stop the advance of Iraqi troops from Erbil, Kurds send reinforcements.

@Donward

"Armed and unarmed civilians have blocked the main roads inside Kirkuk, preventing Peshmerga military vehicles from retreating the battlefield after clashes erupted with Iraqi army and Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi forces at dawn on Monday."

According to rumors, a part of the leadership (the family of the late leader Talabani) of one of the two leading parties of Kurdistan, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, reached an agreement with Baghdad and Tehran and withdrew its detachments from Kirkuk, giving battle to the Iraqi forces without a fight. Apparently not without a success for Iran a commander of "Qods" forces of IRGS Qasem Suleymani flew to them recently.

According to the Iranian media, referring to the command of the militia "basidj" of Iran's IRGS in the Central Province (Ostan-e Markazi), the commander of the battalion "Fatekhin" (فاتحین - fatehin), General Abdullah Khosrawi, was killed in Syria.
