Alzoc Posted August 12, 2018 Report Share Posted August 12, 2018 I don't know, using a big central system to heat water and then circulate it seem like common sense to me. Water has a high thermal capacity, you can add some additive to avoid it freezing when it's really cold and then circulate it in whatever you want (floor heating, simple radiator, radiating plates on the ceiling). Loss in lines aren't really a trouble if you bury and isolate the pipes properly. You can use whatever way you want to heat it (or even cool it in summer) so it's a pretty flexible system. My parents got a combined system of thermal solar panels and wood pellets combustions for winter, peoples in the north use reversible heat pump. Most city burn non recyclable waste and then inject the heat into their central system. Heck in one town I lived in they had a project to connect a small nuclear reactor to the city heating system in the late 70s: You can see in the picture the other central units for the town at this time, waste, coal and fuel. One of the reason besides cost they didn't do it was that they were concerned that it would destroy jobs linked to coal in the region. Nowadays the major obstacle would be scared "ecologist" (nuclear heat? heresy!) but we still managed to use a crocodile farm (reptile zoo) as a heat sink for an enrichment plant (now we switched to a more efficient enrichment process using less energy so they had to find another heat source). Went a bit off-topic but most city have to burn some of their waste so using the heat generated is actually a good idea. Same for most power plants which need to sink large amounts of heat for cooling, instead of just releasing it in the environment it's better to inject it in the heating circuits of the nearby towns as much as possible.
