Our MoD and MFA statements about recent events:

MFA:

Quote

"We consider the killing of Suleymani by an American missile strike in the vicinity of Baghdad as an adventurous step that will lead to increased tension throughout the region," the Russian Foreign Ministry noted. "Suleymani devotedly served the cause of protecting Iran’s national interests. We express our sincere condolences to the Iranian people."

MoD:

Quote

"General Qassem Suleimani was a competent military leader, had a well-deserved authority and significant influence throughout the Middle East region. Under his direct leadership, long before the formation of the US led so-called" international coalition ", armed resistance to the international terrorist groups ISIS and Al Qaeda was organized in Syria and Iraq. His personal merits in the fight against ISIS * in Syria are undeniable, " the Russian defense ministry said in a statement.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also warned that short-sighted US actions, expressed in the assassination of a general, will lead to a sharp escalation of the military-political situation in the Middle East region and serious negative consequences for the entire international security system. "

   Meanwhile, in Iraqistan:

Quote

In a resolution adopted at an emergency meeting of the Council of Representatives, the deputies "obliged the government to put an end to the military presence of foreign forces in the republic and cease work within the framework of a security agreement concluded with the forces of the international anti-terrorist coalition."
In particular, the parliament’s decision says, “the government should take practical steps to stop any foreign military presence, prohibit the use of the country's airspace, and also withdraw the request to the international anti-terror coalition for assistance to combat the Islamic State terrorist organization

Quote

Despite attempts to disrupt this meeting, which led to the absence of many Sunni and Kurdish deputies, the main Shiite parties gathered enough votes for the quorum and majority. Now everything is in the hands of the Iraqi government itself.

Large-scale mourning ceremonies are also held in Iraq for the dead Iraqi and Iranian commanders.

   Yuri Lyamin's commentaries:

Quote

In my opinion, serious actions on the part of Iran should be expected no sooner than the Suleymani’s funeral, and they are scheduled for January 7th. They need to choose which response plan to put into action, and most importantly, they need to give millions of Iranians a time to goodbye to whom they considered their hero. And now something unprecedented is happening perhaps from the funeral of Imam Khomeini in 1989. The streets of the cities where the funeral procession passes are filled with a sea of people.

/.../

As I noted earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei immediately promised a tough revenge on the assassins of General Suleymani. According to the results of the meeting of the Supreme Council of National Security of Iran held after this, it was already specifically stated that it was the American regime itself that was fully responsible for the consequences of this criminal action.

The US and Iran continue to move in a spiral of escalation, and the open assassination of such a high-ranking official as General Suleimani leaves Iran with nothing more than the need for retaliatory strike action.
This was directly stated by the permanent representatives of Iran to the UN: "The answer to the military action is a military action," he said in an interview with CNN, and added that revenge "will be brutal." In addition, in a letter to the Secretary General and the UN Security Council, it was reported that in response to a US attack, Iran has the right to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Iran has a choice of different options for a potential force response against the United States and American interests in the region. Moreover, the entire Iranian history of the last four decades shows that Iran’s ability to take serious risks and its ability to play aggravation should not be underestimated if Tehran considers it necessary.
The question of where all this will lead remains open. Both Tehran and Washington do not want a full-scale war, but the history of US-Iran relations after the revolution also knows examples of limited armed clashes between countries, when neither side wanted to give in and show weakness.

Part of me thinks that we should perhaps start moving some of this discussion to the US/Iran flirting with quagmire thread, since it looks like we're starting to report commentary as well.

Petraeus just gave an interview on the US-Iran conflict. Perhaps the most salient bit to me:

Quote

MCAMMON: And what's your prediction?

PETRAEUS: ...Iran now respond? Well, I think Iran is not in the strongest of positions, given the sanctions, a dismal economy and widespread Iranian popular unrest. So I tend to think it is more likely that we will see a variety of proxy attacks. And again, Iran has a lot of proxies throughout the region, thanks to the efforts of Qassem Soleimani. But really, this comes down to whether or not this has restored some degree of deterrence, which clearly was lacking, given what Iran and their proxies were doing throughout the region, and steadily ratcheting the efforts upward.

The Brookings Institute has a series of brief commentaries from their 'experts' .Unsurprisingly, center-left views dominant much, but not all, of this work. There are some interesting links to outside sources in there as well.

EDIT: couple more interesting articles as well:

How Soleimani's killing could make a stronger Iraq

Does Soleimani's death matter?

Turkish President Erdogan said the Turkish military has already been sent to Libya.

“In Libya, various combat units will operate, they are not our soldiers. But our military will coordinate everything. An operational headquarters will be created. ”

This is probably about Turkish-controlled Syrian fighters or PMCs.

Turkey needs to put more exp points towards research of colors other than"red"

Al Shabaab successfully attacked a Kenyan airfield causing a lot of damage to the US AFRICOM including several casualties and an expensive hardware. No words on kenyan casualties.

1 US service member killed, 2 wounded

2 US DoD contractors killed

1 DASH-8 special purpose aircraft destroyed

1 King Air special purpose aircraft (?) destroyed

Several (?) hellicopters destroyed (at least one shall be Bell 412)

2 M-ATV likely also destroyed

Something important from Libya. LNA took control of Sirte and its airbase. There are reports about hundreds of local fighters defecting to LNA.

I don't think that trailer has naything to do with Bayraktar. It looks like something old.

This is Bayraktar command post: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/68/Bayraktar_Tactical_UAS_GCS.JPG/694px-Bayraktar_Tactical_UAS_GCS.JPG

Maybe, if only ANNA news covered Libyan conflict, we would have very good footage of events.

   Yuri Lyamin short commentary

Quote

The forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) of Field Marshal Haftar, dealt a serious blow to the Libyan Government of national accord (unity). The LNA seized the city of Sirte in the central part of the coast of Libya and are trying to develop an offensive further west towards Misurata, taking advantage of the fact that the troops of the city of Misurata, which constitute the main power of the government in Tripoli, were forced to transfer their main forces to the Tripoli front and left in Sirte mostly less reliable and combat-ready units.

Looks like they captured Turkish-supplied BMC Kirpi MRAP (and plenty of shitty technicals)

Actually it's a lot more countries involved. UAE, Egypt and Russia are directly and visibly involved on LNA side while Turkey on GNA side but many other countries are involved indirectly. France or Greece do support LNA as well. USA or Italy at least seem to have no problem with Haftar. Qatar supports GNA. Algeria, Tunisia or Marocco probably too but they don't want to be involved directly. Recently Tunisia even refused to support the Turkish intervention.

On the other hand there is very little left of GNA territory so it's a question if it's worth of own thread. Maybe...

PS LNA captured today also one Khrizantema and one T-55 in Abu Grian. LNA also claimed to shot down one Bayraktar T2 but there is no footage anywhere for confirmation.

Yesterday, Turkish President Recep Erdogan announced the dispatch of Turkish troops to Libya. And today, pictures have already begun to appear of the Turkish air defense systems that have arrived in Libya and are deployed there.
Here are pics with, in my opinion, Turkish 35-mm ZSU KORKUT from ASELSAN from the port area of the Libyan Tripoli.

Czech government decided to send another 60 soldiers (601st Group of Special Operations) to Sahel. They will be part of purely French-lead operation Barkhane, task force Takuba. That is interesting in two things - it's combat operation and it's not lead by UN, EU or NATO but directly by the French. The soldiers will operate in Sahel (not only in Mali) for two years since half of 2020. Besides that Czech contingent in EU Training Mission in Mali stays on 118 soldiers (of 620 total) and in June Czechs will take the lead in the mission.

God save them if this is the UN.

I pray they have command that allows them to "shoot as needed per individual perogative with zero recourse" and not the shit a friend  dealt with in what was Yugoslavia.
