The early Leo 2 turret design, with the huge weak spot on the right side of the turret where the gunner's sight went, was a rather curious design.

 

What was even more curious was that, despite this flaw having been cleaned up in later Leo 2s and all other designs, the Arjun copies it.

It was still immensely thick behind that "weak spot". Some 600 mm in LOS, IIRC.

Interesting video.  The size comparisons seem a bit off to me.  I have a hard time believing that this vehicle was really lower than a T-55.  Also, the power to weight ratio chart seems a bit optimistic.  I doubt the difference was quite that extreme once the Leo 1 went into production and gained some weight.

True. It's interesting how small and round the cast turret looks on the early version.  It's so un-German looking!  The later Leopard 1A3 with the welded turret seems so much more German in appearance to me.

Hilary Doyle mentioned in Operation Think Tank that, having measured as many surviving German AFVs as possible, sometimes with lasers, he found that the hull dimensions are often quite different.  Sometimes by inches.

 

Given that, how the hell did they replace transmissions?

Seriously though, if they had to hand-fit every single transmission and transmission component during a field repair, all panthers would have been found as abandoned hulks in a 150km-wide circle with the factory at the center.

Where is the slop in the dimensions? If the hull itself is a little longer or shorter, does it effect where the motor/transmission mounts?

To use a poor automotive analogy, you can have a Ford 390 and C6 transmission with gobs of room in a F100 but have to shoehorn it into a 1967 Mustang but they both work.

I'm imagining the artisanal tank workers taking the motor and tranny, sticking it in the tank and mounting it where it fits.

Different hull dimensions could fairly easily change the location of the final drives, since those need to pierce the hull.
