Hilary Doyle mentioned in Operation Think Tank that, having measured as many surviving German AFVs as possible, sometimes with lasers, he found that the hull dimensions are often quite different.  Sometimes by inches.

 

Given that, how the hell did they replace transmissions?

 

Glorious impenetrable Kruppstahl can be easily adjusted to any dimension needed of course.

It's also true for british and german postwar AFV's - making metal boxes is hard. There's normally universal joints and stuff between the transmission and final drives
