The Meteorology Thread: I Want to Get Off March 2018's Wild Ride

Recommended Posts

For discussion of all sorts of weather and weather related phenomena. Post cool shit, or just talk about what it's like outside.

First, here's a cool pic of some sprites;

Also, we're just now starting to get into hurricane season (although it actually began about 5 months ago with Hurricane Alex)! The US has dodged a lot of bullets recently, there hasn't been a landfalling major hurricane in the US since 2005. The biggest story in the Atlantic for 2015 was Hurricane Joaquin, which reached  category 4 intensity over the Bahamas despite its unusual method of formation, and sank the cargo ship El Faro;

The East Pacific had Hurricane Patricia, which produced the highest winds ever recorded in a hurricane, and the lowest pressure ever recorded in the western hemisphere (872 mb)

Side not, California hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 1898. Maybe this is the year they'll get unlucky!

Hurricane Ike Final Advisory

HURRICANE IKE FINAL ADVISORY NUMBER 666
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
0200 AM SUN SEP 14 2008

A MASSIVE HURRICANE, NEY, A TITANIC BLACK MASS OF DESTRUCTION, BORN OF THE COLD, EVIL WOMB OF MOTHER NATURE, WILL RENDER MUCH OF COASTAL AND INLAND TEXAS A BARREN WASTELAND. IKE IS COMING.

SUCH IS THE POWER OF THIS STORM, IF INDEED, ANYTHING DISPENSING THIS AMOUNT OF HUMAN SUFFERING CAN BE CALLED A STORM.

THE STORM SURGE, ONCE PREDICTED AT 17 FEET, WILL NOW REACH UNHEARD OF HEIGHTS. IF WILL BE AS IF THE OCEAN ITSELF HAS VACATED IT'S VAST PRISON, SHAKING LOOSE HER CHAINS, AND LAYING ITSELF PRONE ATOP THE CITIES OF MAN. THE LAST VESTIGES OF IT'S BONDAGE SINKING ALL THAT LIES IN IT'S PATH.

ALL STRUCTURES WITHING A 100 MILE RADIUS WILL SUFFER DEVASTATING EFFECTS. WOOD WILL SPLINTER, CONCRETE WILL BECOME DUST. THE FOUNDATIONS WILL BE THE STARK REMNANTS OF HUMAN EXISTENCE IN THESE AREAS. TREES WILL BECOME UPROOTED AND CARRIED MILES BY WINDS THAT WILL BLAST THE VERY SKIN FROM ANYONE FOOLISH ENOUGH TO REMAIN OUTSIDE. BUT THEY WILL BE THE LUCKY ONES...THE FIRST TO DIE. FOR A MUCH GREATER MISERY AWAITS THOSE THAT SURVIVE.

AMIDST THIS MIRE OF CARNAGE, THE FEW SURVIVORS WILL WALLOW IN A SOUP OF DEATH AND DESPAIR, AS THEY FACE GRIM ODDS. FEW STRUCTURES WILL EXIST, AND FOOD AND WATER WILL BE MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD. AS CORPSES OF HUMANS AND ANIMALS ROT, DYSENTERY AND MALARIA WILL BEGIN THEIR MACABRE DANCE AMONG THOSE REMAINING AND MANY WILL BE FORCED TO CONSUME ONE ANOTHER TO LIVE ONE FINAL DAY.

ENTIRE GENERATIONS WILL PERISH, AND THE HURRICANE WILL CREEP INTO LEGEND. IT WILL BE A SIN TO EVEN CALL ITS NAME ALOUD, THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THIS EVENT BEING SPOKEN OF IN HUSHED TONES, AND REVERED BY THOSE WHO SEE IT AS JUDGMENT. IKE IS HERE. IKE IS HERE. IKE IS HERE. IKE IS HERE. IKE IS H

WHITE NIGHTS ARE ANNOYING. Sometimes.

I would quite like to see the midnight sun (and the northern lights) at some point before I die.

(I still can't believe I got turned down for that job in Shemya. How many other people were applying?)

On a different note, tornadoes are currently rated on the Enhanced Fujita scale. This runs from EF0-EF5, and the rating is based on the damage done by the tornado (since it is often difficult to measure the actual wind speed in a tornado). Before this was the regular Fujita scale, which ran from F0-F5 (though with slightly different wind speeds for each bracket).

Fun fact, the Fujita scale in its original incarnation went up to F12, where it merged with the Mach scale;

300px-Fujita_scale_technical.svg.png

(pretty nifty how it correlates to the Beaufort scale)

Occasionally you'll hear discussion about an "F6" tornado. Such a thing does not actually exist, as tornadic wind speeds are not known to reach that high on the old Fujita scale. In any case, an F5/EF5 will destroy anything completely, rendering the distinction between an F5 and an F6 meaningless in practical terms. However, if there ever was an F6 tornado, it would probably be the Jarrell tornado.

It was notable for not only destroying buildings, but stripping dirt from fields to a depth of 18 inches, and tearing asphalt off roads it passed over.

Also, the Jarrell Tornado featured an appearance of the Dead Man Walking;

JARREL~1.png

Supposedly there is a Native American legend than any tornado which shows the Dead Man Walking will be especially deadly.

Microbursts are pretty dangerous. Back in the 70s and 80s, there were a bunch of airline crashes as a result of microbursts, notably Delta 191;

(the flight 191 curse strikes again)

Since then, they've added wind shear warnings at most major airports, to give warning and allow pilots time to respond.

Microbursts also happen in Colorado;

Bonus of a bunch of cadets making themselves useful by weighing down the glider.

Why is the heat index higher than the actual temp, I thought Phoenix never got above -30% humidity.

It's monsoon season so it's 15% humidity today, which is a lot at 113

Hurricane Ike Final Advisory

(not sure where originally from, had saved in .txt file)

Hurricane Ike ripped the roof off my dormitory, and destroyed the bridge to the campus in my Freshman year.

Good times.
