Turns out the end mill doesn't like cutting the plate out from the stock material, so going to need to think of another way to cut it out.  This'll be the last step before it's done with the CNC machine.  My present idea is drilling a bunch of holes along that path to make the bit's job easier, but I suppose there may be other ways as well.  Taking off .05" per pass the current way is no bueno, regardless of feed rate.

Machine is limited to 4k RPM and I can't really go bigger than my 3/8" endmill since I've only got so much space to work with.

Today was effectively my last day to use the shop this semester, still have about two thirds of the stock stuff left.  I tried running the bit with half the depth of cut as before, but it still really hated the cut.  Got the majority of the extra stuff off with an old school vertical mill, the rest is for me to do later somehow.  Would have taken the smaller ends off too if I had the time, but alas, I did not.

It'll be funky at the shallow end since the final cutout didn't reach the bottom of the plate yet (not entirely sure why I did it that way other than just because), but I figure a power drill and my dremel could help get those last two chunks off.  If not, I know I can find someone who can.

This is mainly because I have no decent holster for this gun.

So, I was browsing around Apex Gun Parts on friday, and I saw that they had unicorn ink bladders (Steyr MG3/MG74 barrels) for sale. Military surplus in used but "good" condition for $250 per barrel. The last time I saw these things around, people where asking $400 for them. Since this is the last thing that I need for the full caliber conversion for the M53/MG3 chimera that I am working on, I ordered up two of them. I checked the website again tonight, and they are sold out. So, I'm curious as to whether or not they simply didn't have that many to start with, or if people just pounce on those things like I did.

I felt really dumb the first time I checked the shipping label after ordering parts for the fourth time in a month and realizing I lived about a 20 minute drive from them LOL!

Also, you might try robertrtg.com for MG1/MG3 stuff... The prices are usually steeper than apex but whoever runs that site has some very very good connections for getting German milsurp stuff!

I'm sure you're already aware of this site and have checked, but other than checking sarco just for the hell of it I don't know of any other really good sources for German stuff anymore.

Robertrtg is where I was going to pick up a Pallad handguard from eventually, but last I looked they were all gone. I'll probably end up doing an MLOK handguard from the company the AKOU guy is working with instead.

Yeah I was going to throw one on my good Polish 5.45 side folder...

I see we share the same taste in replacement gas tube covers too LOL.

Every time I wind up with kits that look like psychotic beavers raided a commie armory for dam building supplies I buy one of those to stick on it until I decide what to do with the finished build.

I used to do quite a few when kits were cheaper.

Haven't done one in probably a couple years though, it's kind of been a rough two years and I'm just barely starting to dig tools out of mothballs but that's slow going because my brother took a week of leave to come up to Oregon from 29 palms to put them up for me when I got sick.

Yesterday, ordered a Makarov off of Southern Ohio Gun.  Today, ClassicFirearms puts their Makarovs on sale for $275.  Thankfully that happened the day after and not the week after, so I should be able to cancel that order and get it at the lower price before my order ships.

Also ran down to the gun store to doublecheck with FFL stuff and was taunted by the rather nice FN-49 they have that I will never get.  It is in 8mm Mauser, but it doesn't look like the thing's ever been used much at all before.

Ok It's probably going to look pretty run of the mill then, you'll probably also get the less cool looking but more commie red bakelite grips instead of black bakelite.

Things to know about the Makarov.

-Many consider it the best balanced direct blowback design ever made, as it functions fine for the round it's chambered in while having a slide that's lighter than your average school bus. (See: Hi Points for probably the most common example of what happens when a blowblack design is too goddamn heavy") So yeah, It's surprisingly small and light when you consider that it is, infact, a direct blowblack design.

-It's insanely reliable and durable for how cheap they are to make, the trigger is decent. I'd rate the iron sights as "god awful", but considering It's an early 50s era pistol design, you're not going to find many pistols with good sights from that era. (fuck, most modern non custom sights suck ass, gun designers are letting us down.) There are manufacturers that do make custom sights for Makarovs that are about a thousand times bettewr then the standard ones, whether or not you want to invest in that is your decision. I can't handle a Makarov that well due to my hand size but ergonomics wise I've had much worse.

-Yes, it will shoot +P without issues, you don't need to ask, mainly since these are supposedly "appearing unissued" in quality. (Inspect it first before using it anyway like any older gun, but it should be kosher.)

-There are .22 Conversion kits for Bulgarian Makarovs (They'd probably work in non Bularians, but I digress.), these are fun and handy if you want cheap, lower recoil practice.

-For some reason, probably due to the formerly cheap price, these are really, really popular guns with Bikers and Biker gangs, I can tell you this because I used to see this alot, this probably won't affect you in anyway but I thought I'd throw that out there.

That's an Egyptian FN-49, probably rearsenaled. What gun store is it? If you're not buying, I am...

I'm in luck in that I actually prefer the red bakelite grips to the black.  If I were to replace it with anything, it would be a fancy wooden grip.  One of the things that drew me to the gun is that I both like how it looks, plus the thing just works.  I get that the torture test videos aren't the best test for how reliable a gun is in practice, but if it still shoots all 8 rounds fine when stuffed with mud and wet sand, I'd find it hard to believe at that point that the gun is a jam-o-matic.

9mm Mak ammo I can find in town here for reasonable prices.  I hadn't looked yet at how it handles +P ammo, but I've at least heard it feeds hollow point ammo just fine, something I guess is an issue with many older guns.  Plinking ammo for 9mm Mak seems to cost only a hair more than .380.

Along with the grips, any upgraded sights or .22 conversion kit is something I'd worry about later.  Sights I imagine I will want to replace, haven't heard anything good about them.  My understanding on the East German (?) .22 conversion kits is that like any other makarov thing, it'll work in any nation's.  Issues only come up when you try mix and matching parts from .380 variants or P-64s or something.  I'll want to look more at what's available for me, but of all the issues to have, poor sights I imagine will be one of the easier ones to fix.

The gun on that rack the last time I was there was a Hakim, so I guess someone's got a lot of Egyptian stuff for them.

The Mak is headed my way now and I guess I'll get to see if a certain someone snagged the FN-49, but curse you sweaty Ben for putting yugo tokarevs at dirt cheap the same time this happens.  I'm butthurt enough as it is that I missed the era of <$100 milsurp guns, but not sure if it would be in my interest to get this as well.  Not even sure any place in town sells ammo for it.

I didn't. Something came up, and I made the fiscally responsible decision.

It's all good though cuz I'm about to blow my wad on something else.

You know, blowing wads on things isn't exactly smiled upon in retail stores, their cleaning staff in particular.

7.62x25 is easy to find online, but Academy doesn't carry it (my usual ammo spot) and it'll probably be until next Saturday that I head to my FFL to pick up my mak that I'll be able to check if they carry it (guessing they won't).  I'd like to avoid shipping charges where I can, but I'm guessing I'll probably need to bite the bullet (ayy lmao) on this one if I do decide I should spend the money.

The $180 pricetag for a gun with "excessive bluing wear" is very tempting since I could always refinish the gun myself in the future, but I rear that will also include worn parts and areas with minor rust.

Also, whatever you're getting instead of the FN-49 had better be pretty great.  I'm still salty that I can't get it.
