I finally got out to sight-in my Vortex 3x prism sight on my midlength AR. It only took me... three months? 

 

Now, a little back-story. This gun was giving me trouble for the last two years probably. It had a Nikon P223 4-14x scope, which did decent when I first put it on the gun. Then unbeknownst to me, it started to shit the bed.

 

But only randomly. As in, the zero would shift. At its worst, I would have to sight this thing every trip to the grasslands. 

 

Now, to make matters worse, my poor, broke-ass second-college self picked up some Wolf 55 grain SP ammo on super sale. 500 rounds of the stuff. 

 

I don't know if that batch was bad, because I've used it before and it has been mediocre but shootable. However, the ammo was just shit all around.

 

So between my zero constantly shifting and ammo that was giving myself and friends ( @Ulric can attest to this) 10 MOA on the best days, my rifle shooting was pretty pathetic. 

 

In both my ARs, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Much less ring steel at 100 or 150 meters consistently. 

 

Meanwhile, I used Ulric's AK-74 and could make them sing all day long. 

 

So I ditched the scope, shot the rest of the ammo into the side of a hill, and picked up some Magtech 55 grain xm-193 ripoff junk on sale. It HAD to be better than what I was currently using. 

 

And so far, I like the stuff. I went to an indoor range, paid my 10 bucks, and had the line to myself. 

 

Also, kudos to Ulric for turning down my barrel profile. Balances MUCH better now.

 

 

 

 

First group after sighting in at 50 yards was this, at 50 yards. Still some slight adjusting to do. But at 50, I actually felt like this was progress. This was 5 rounds.

 

 

 

My last group of the day was the best I've shot with this gun in years. 100 yards, 6 rounds, from one sandbag. 

 

I'll take it for a cheap-but-reliable mid length upper and somewhat cheap range ammo.

It says right on the slide that it is Cal. .22, presumably .22 long rifle.

Indeed.  The clerk at the gun store was bizarrely convinced it was designed by Pedersen.  But it is important to have at least one artifact in your house designed by a psycho murderer.

Nah it's all gravy man, I've actually been geeking out pretty hardcore on a few different gun projects any one of which is kinda exciting and bitchin on it's own.

 

Example: For my and the wife's shields i actually broke down and just made the magazine capacity extending baseplate dust cover dealie fuckers that also are part of my mag retemtion system that I've borrowed the assisted opener knife concept from in a way to make the reload "jump" free of it's retention spot once actuated.

 

Cool thing is each setup is a +3 round capacity extension that gives a nice "pinky hook for primary hand and better supporthand "butt feel" while in hand and makes the gun itself stay nicer in my holsters until i hit the release point at which time the gun fairly jumps right into the web of my hand while jumping me to 9+1 with the 6 round stock flush fit mag.

 

It's fun and I've learned stuff I'll be using on the next few projects.

 

I'm seriously wanting to try my hand at making some constant force spring based rifle and pistol mag attempts... (Probably because i hate myself) Though I'm doing akm and ak74 mag based attempts for the rifle stuff to avoid the vertical hell funnel of god damnit gene and what the fuck Sullivan!

I took the 1908 to the range today. It is a very pleasant gun to shoot, especially compared to the CZ 82 and PM. It's really tempting to get one of the 1903 reproductions, simply because it would even more fun to shoot, and I wouldn't have to increase the round count on a vintage pistol.

 

At any rate, the 1908 worked like a dream. Mild recoil with a decent trigger reset made for a wonderful combination, and I was able to get quick followup shots.

These ‘ultra thin’ grips I got from Wilson Combat really do help the ergonomics of my 92 since I don’t have giant hands.

I've been working on a new upper receiver for my infamous 6920 (yes, this one). This is a big step for me, as I've developed a reputation for austerity in my AR-15s. I went some 8,000+ rounds with that 6920 without changing much more than the handguards, for example. It took me a long time to buy a second upper for it, and that upper ended up being... An el-cheapo 20" A4! Many of my peers stared at the result of that with disgust.

Suffice it to say, I do not keep up with the fashions of the AR world. But all that ends soon, sort of. A while back, I decided I would keep pace, nay, leapfrog the current trends by upgrading my 6920 into a badass all purpose shooting machine! And then I did the math and decided that would be far too expensive and what was I thinking, and scaled it back to this build:

My goals were to create a more consistent shooter that I could train more reliably with. I have found I am a decent enough shot now that my old austere setups are holding me back. I think it was that new Tikka and the Bushnell it wears that taught me this; but whatever the reason, I wanted a rifle that is both more accurate and more consistent now, which means a good barrel and a free float rail. In addition to that, I wanted a gun that would act as a chronograph platform, which means it needed a 14.5" barrel. 16" would be my preferred in other circumstances, but none other than 14.5" will do, I'm afraid. I simply must get those sweet, sweet velocity readings for that length. You'll see why, soon.

 

As you can see, I have kept the essentials. The excellent Criterion barrel will still be the heart of my new upper, and the Geissele SSA-E will be my trigger (bought on sale of course). Elsewhere, I have cut costs. Originally, I was going to use the Geissele MK14 rail, since it's swaggy and SOCOM used it. Honestly, until embarrassingly recently the only thought I had put into that was "it's the best". It occurred to me sometime yesterday that I have no business with IR lasers or other attachments that need to hold zero on a rail to 200m at night, so I should go with a cheaper rail. I could have bought the ALG rail as certain people recommended, but I just found it too unsightly. That is, in my opinion, one seriously fugly rail. The MCMR ended up being a compromise between appearance on the one hand, and practicality on the other. It's attractive enough, and easy to install - while being substantially cheaper and more available than the MK14. OK.
 

Of course, a 14.5" barrel means pinning and welding, and that means I will be stuck with whatever muzzle device I choose. This made for some tough decisions. Initially I decided on the SureFire WARCOMP-556CTN, a device far, far more gucci that I would ever normally consider. But, you know, that's a Criterion on there, and I'm pinning and welding - I should probably get a flash hider of quality to match, and preferably one that can mount a can, if I ever decide to go that route. Hence the SureFire. But eventually I relented and decided that if, in the distant future, I did decide I needed an NFA item to do the job of a pair of foamies, I could just carefully remove the flash hider itself and pin and weld on something new. Or, more realistically, pay someone to do it for me. So instead, I picked the cheapest flash hider that was long enough to meet the ATF's minimum barrel length, which saved us something like $115 cool ones. I am truly a bastard.

Initially, I wanted to build this off my existing upper receiver, but it became obvious to me that doing so would sacrifice a valuable 16" test platform, and that I could build a complete and separate upper receiver for little extra. Hence, I need to buy a furnished upper receiver, but fortunately quality ones are available for $90 or less these days. I have paid some mind to buying the more expensive BCM uppers, as those are quite nice, but I think the Spike's available on Primary Arms will do just as well. Plus, I did the math - having to have the BCM A2X shipped from a different vendor (Bravo, as it's not available anywhere else) doesn't make up for the difference in cost between the two uppers - sadly.

 

And that's the whole build! But not quite. Sometime down the line, I might just add that SureFire, and in fact if the stars align right it might make it into the initial build, taking the spot of the BCM A2X. Likewise, if the right sale hits (say, on Black Friday) and that Geissele MK14 (or, hell, a MK8!) goes on sale in combo with a gas block it would make little sense to pass that up. I also mused at replacing my current stock (a Tapco of all things! Much nicer than the factory Colt stock, I promise) with a swaggier BCM B5, but to be honest $60 is quite a lot for a stock that I really don't need. Alas, my rifle will probably say "Tapco" forever. As well, I have found it annoying to switch between uppers with only one charging handle between them, and the standard AR CH is as everyone knows a bit of a bear. So, someday I may buy a BCM Gunfighter CH; likely far, far sooner than I grab that B5 stock.

 

All of this miserliness is to an end, though: I have my sights set on a nice variable power optic, probably a Vortex Razor HD II 1-6. My current gun has an ACOG I bought used back in the Dark Ages, and it works well, but it has an exceptionally short eye relief (it routinely blesses me - fortunately scope eye from a 5.56 is more annoyance than injury) and is a less practical optic by today's standards. It's time to move on, I think.

Personally I prefer the Magpul SL stocks because of the shape of the buttpad.

 

If you didn’t already have that Geisselle trigger I would say to get a Black Friday sale Larue MBT.

 

I have the position of my rear irons and ACOG switched so that I can have the ACOG farther back, being able to have the stock extended farther is more valuable to me than a few inches of distance between my backup sights.

 

If you get a new optic I suggest something with an ACSS reticle.
