roguetechie
Meplat, Could be worse than having your MAS49 called a Garand, though I've had mine "identified" by THAT GUY at various ranges as a Garand an M14 and worst of all a MINI 14 once!! I had to console my poor proud former French service rifle all the way home after the mini 14 incident. None of this was nearly as funny / awkward as the time someone brought an M1941 Johnson rifle out one day... The rarity and novelty of seeing one in the wild immediately drew a crowd of mostly middle aged gun guys suddenly surrounding the rare beast and it's owner many of them excitedly trying to talk to the owner at once... Wow! That sure is one nice Johnson! If you let me play with your Johnson I'll clean it for you after! Can I hold your Johnson? Man I want a Johnson so bad right now that it hurts!! The very quiet and quickly reddening owner was at a loss for words and looking like he didn't know whether to laugh or cry at such enthusiastic Passion Envy and the repeated and numerous requests and jostling by those wanting to hold, play with, or even simply clean his Johnson after everyone else had their turn... I had to turn around and create some distance to hide the hysterical laughter I couldn't keep in any longer. Most awkward range day ever Belesarius, Donward, Jeeps_Guns_Tanks and 1 other

Alex C.
I once filled up a johnson with 7.5 French as it was in a sleeve next to a 30-06 box at a good sized shoot with a lot going on. Took about 5-10 minutes of banging to try and get the damn thing out. After this, Nate goes "NATO standardization saved us from a lot of this kind of thing I reckon". Yes, people will bitch endlessly about how .280 British should have been adopted, without considering how miraculous it was that any round got adopted at all. D.E. roguetechie
I am very excited to find out what exactly project ATHENA actually is. Me and the rest of demented gnomes are still working away at the bullet thinger we talked about. It's going better, worse, slower, faster, and way more expensive than expected... So, pretty much exactly as expected LOL New technology is hard.
roguetechie
Also, Very jealous of Alex right now. P.S: While the JSAR and JLMG were both multi caliber capable, they did still require a bbl swap / correct case head diameter for the bolt installed. Not sure if Johnson ever really manufactured other bolts for them, but it was theoretically possible. Pound for pound it was seriously one of the coolest weapons systems to come out of this era. Jealous of Alex? Because he's dropped off the face of the map and moved to Tasmania? Hahahah. Not sure what you mean. The Johnsons are very neat, if not excellent designs. They do contain the seeds of greatness, eventually expressed in the AR-10 and AR-15.

So, pretty much exactly as expected LOL New technology is hard. ATHENA (it's cooler in all caps, don't judge me) is my ballistics lab project. The idea is to be able to take a bullet shape from a drawing in SolidWorks to a fully tested projectile with empirical data for drag, BC, etc. It's different from what you're doing in that it can only handle shapes turned out of brass, not different bullet configurations. Still, it's a start. That rifle will be the primary testbed for ATHENA. It's a Tikka T3x CTR in .260, with a Bushnell 3.5-21 G2DMR on top. Tomorrow, I take it to the range for the first time for sighting in and basic testing.
roguetechie
It's a hell of a start, and very much in the vein in what I'm working on! And, like you said, it will definitely take exploring the design space somewhere far more empirical. I look forward to reading and participating in the conversation your experiments produce, regardless of where that conversation winds up being at. Probably the only place you'll see me commenting on Tony's site, since I finally reached my burnout point otherwise there. On the plus side, I did get to use the terms aggressively pedantic and passive aggressive pedantry repeatedly in my last two posts repeatedly. It's OK though, the whole 7 posters left who comment there would all prefer I just went away anyway since whenever you stop pissing on the gerpesher parade... Here I come with a bunch more stuff that makes them confused, angry, and etc. It's not like half of them respond anyway. And the ones that do for the most part, we'll just say that the aggressively pedantic and passive aggressive pedantry comments apply to more than one of the regulars there. Sturgeon
No idea how much it weighs, but it's definitely too heavy to hunt with. It's likely over 10lbs.Today I took it out to 400 meters (440 yd). We'll see about taking it out to a kilometer soon, but I still have some learning to do with the scope.
