Grant and Ryan have corrupted you!  I still have a bad taste from an original S9 I handled.  How early, you ask?  It still had the Garand-esque triggerguard safety.  The trigger felt like it was never going to release.  The minuscule trigger stroke combined with an uber-heavy pull made it impossible to use.  I was constantly checking to see if the safety or key lock was accidentally engaged.

To lead on Sturgeon's glorious new rifle post, I, too, have purchased a rifle.

But it is not new.

And it actually doesn't even work.

A Spanish 1916 mauser, rechambered to 7.62 NATO at the Spanish factory long ago. "Gunsmith special" version, so it's gonna be broken. Just don't know how.

I figure it'll make a fun project for this winter.

Nice hand grenade.

Everyone knows that 7.62 NATO was downloaded heavily from its .308 WIN counterpart because Europeans are pansy-ass titty-babies.

.308 WIN has, like, ten times as many CUPs as 7.62 NATO. And that's around sixteen times as many CUPs as 7mm Mauser, because 7mm Mauser is old.

And it's arrived. It's in decent condition, for being "Broken".

Did your dog chew on the stock before the photos were taken?

B)

No. I think that happened when they air-dropped these rifles into the states.

This stock is BEAT.

Watch that thing cut sub MOA groups.

Until better looking furniture is fitted and it is reblued, whereupon it becomes a fine looking minute of barn tomato-stake.

It's a pity there's no real way of knowing the history of that gun. Who carried it? Where? Was it used in any battles?

...

...

Welp, I guess that means you have to buy some NAZI die/proof mark stamps and make your own!

I've been playing tick-tack-toe in the stock while watching Ulric tear it apart.

That's a lie. We tore it apart together, but I had to tear it from his large german hands occasionally.

We got the thing cleaned out (Because damn did it need it), fully dissasembled, and looked at a few problems.

1) Broken firing pin. I went ahead and ordered another one.

2) Cracked stock. I'm getting some epoxy/bondo/etc and wood finish tomorrow.

3) HORRIBLE friction while working the bolt with a round. Fixed by taking a bit of metal from the extractor lips, because the thing was getting bent out of shape holding the rim of the round.

4) I need a sling and some stripper clips.

5) The magazine follower needed to be fitted better, so we took a file to it. I will look for a longer (length wise) follower for the rifle, because the one I have is undersized and you could get it stuck if you tried.

6) Bore looked pretty nasty at first, but it cleaned up decently. Better than Ulric's enfield, that's for sure. But he's soaking it in copper solvent currently (DO NOT DRINK, FYI)

7) Going to sand down part of the upper hand guard tomorrow as well.

Started sanding the stock today. When I get home from school, I'll get some pictures up. Got some wood-in-a-tube to fix the broken part up front. It's drying in my basement currently.

The 320 grit block is taking a long while, I should have grabbed a coarser block when I picked up the stain. I'm going with something called "Deep cherry" because it made me giggle when I read it out loud.

If I come across my stash of clips, I'll set them aside. I may also have a sling, (or ten) but chances are you might get a bunch of useless junk. I honestly cannot remember if that puke green leather sling I have is for a Spanish mauser or some south american thing.

"Cratex" is your friend. And diamond hones. They are very cheap and handy for fitting.  Go slow. Also- "Valve grinding compound". You can lap your action, but be very very very cautious, and don't push it too far.

I've killed a couple cheap Mauser actions trying to get them "Enfield Slick".  (You never will).

The Spanish Mausers are actually pretty damned decent, at least in my experience. Once made a friend's year by sending him an unopened case of Kynoch 7X57 on clips, as a gift for him graduating USN "Spook School".  The guy had a stunningly beautiful Spanish Mauser M1916 carbine, that shot like it had eyes.

I later had one of the funky FR-07 rifles, and really did not appreciate it as much as I should have.  It was a solid, well made little rifle.

Ah, the days of cheap surplus ammo and rifles.

Anyhow-

Best fix for bore is the electric "foul out".  Really cleaned out the tubes on my Ross and Arisakas.

Don't go out of your way man, it's alright. I'm sure I'll pick something up one of these days.

Any action work will be done after I get the rifle functional again. I'm currently refinishing the stock simply because I've got to wait on a new firing pin anyway, so I might as well do something with the stock while it's off.

Sanding is going decently so far. I wish I had a lower-grit block. The 320 is kinda small for initial sanding.
