LoooSeR
2nd operation in US singleplayer - we are tasked with taking over small town. Spoiler Well, our armor support was ambushed. This leaves our squad vs this town. Positive side is that enemies don't have much of AFVs on the ground, at least for now. Main group of German troops is located here. Spoiler Our squad. We are moving on left flank, this place will be my strongpoint from which i will launch attacks. Once my sniper moved closer, this squad of US troops appeared on right flank. Those guys were finished rather quickly. After some thinking i decided to clear my right flank and capture AT guns to use against enemy troops inside of the city. Another squad assaulting street next to ambush site. Snipers in that building were a reasons of failer of that group of US troops. Clear. Time to jump in. Snipers are best dealt with AT gun, hehe. Germans are trying to counter-attack. This flank is almost done. Back to left flank - now penetrating through a gap in defensive line. Spoiler House with snipers? Blow it up! 1 sniper is partially visible, falling down. Second one was far enough from explosion. But burst from M3 SMG was enough for him. Another house clearing with dynamite. Nazi troops in N-E part of the city have good sniper coverage against attackers. My own sniper is pretty good with his rifle. Small group tried to find my sniper, last soldier came very close to Franklin. This building have several enemy snipers inside, and they are blocking our progress. A little bit of frag grenades can fix this situation. Another unit of US soldiers is rushing to this city. Left flank is now fully cleared and we can go futher. Some reinforcements that enemy received. Not much, but we don't have many soldiers either. Finished a sniper in a house next to small hill with AT guns on the other side of it. I would urather use AT guns, but that hill blocks good shot against this house. Now our own reinforcement arrived, heh. We are just swarming last enemy positions in this town, haha. Instead of trying to kill enemies inside of building with conventional means, blowing up truck nearby was a better idea, ahaha!
LoooSeR
3rd mission - our task is to penetrate German defenses and get to a town outskirts. For this task we were given 2 Shermans. Spoiler And few secodns after we arrived to this place, a German patrol appeared in front of our tanks. We have some time to look around after tearing appart that 2 motorbike patrol. A lot of armor and cannons that can be serious problem. I decided to capture this area and secure my left flank, enemy tanks are moving to our location and we need to prepare for that. Spoiler Panther arrived and almost immediately got A shell into side armor plate. I used those builings as a cover from Panther's main gun. Another tank is moving towards our vehicles. This Panther looks like is still guarding road. This Panzer looks like is moving to road that leads to our location. Clearing houses from infantry to prepare for next wave of enemy armor. Using parts of this building as a defilate, i wait for a good moment to pop out. Another nazi medium tank is knocked out. Last hostile solider killed in this area. Another tanks is advancing towards our positions. Prepared to meet him with second Sherman. He missed, good moment to take him out. Damn, it didn't penetrate frontal armor. Second Sherman is moving back to prepare to meet infantry that is advancing towards us. While doing this tank was hit by German Panzer, but shell hit UFP at really bad angle, so vehicle is ok. First M4 gets into action, AP round hit a big tree between tank and German armor, shells didn't managed to penetrate. At least it took out tracks of that Panzer. 2nd M4 is fighting with rushing infantry. Another hit, tried to damage turret to jam it. First Sherman was hit, but it is still Ok. Using a moment and his jammed turret, 1st M4 is moving in for finishing shot. Now we have several AFVs laying around and few repair kits in our Shermans... hehehe. Preping crew for vehicles. Stuffing tanks with useful equipment. Now we are moving to right flank to take out tanks there to secure our way to city. Spoiler Hey, Germans in haystacks Each of them had RPG launchers, heh. Break building, break enemy tank. Can't go to that field, it have AT mines. Clearing this compound, but another minefield is in front of us. Final enemy here is almost done. Mine detector is going to be useful Panther is being moved to position to deal with a AFV inside of big barn nearby (at the Y-shaped crossroad) Panther is chosen for clearing our rear. Heh, that was a Tiger. And it is done! And we are going to put that thing back in action. Tiger have just few shells left, but armor of that thing will make a difference. Now we are advancing to a town outskirts Spoiler -1 Panther - 2nd Panther Infantry tried to rush through foilage, but burst from MG stopped them. Combat in town started - group of US soldiers are pushing from right flank. Took out tracks on that Panzer, Tiger is out of AP rounds. Trying to use HE to break this hostile armor. It managed to take out our own tracks, which is going to be a problem. Can't destroy it with just HE. Our trophies from a southern field are going to do that job instead. Defense line was tested, so now i'm bringing in my Panther to support Tiger. Germans are also brining in their heavy armor. Panther was parked here to ambush Tiger, but it moved out of our view and flanking us from the right. I decided to clear up this part of town before slow heavy tank gets to his position. Shortly after it appeared and Panther was tasked with taking out this Tiger. Using slow turret roration speed managed to avoid taking fire from it. My Panther also hit 8x8 AFV on the left that tried to sneak to us. Few remaining German soldiers in this part of the town are being mowed down by our trophy tank. Sadly there are not much of allies left in town alive as well. That was close... My tank was hit from the left, took out tracks. Second shell landed on turret, but didn't managed to go through. And here is this bastard One tankmen is repairing tracks while Panther gunner is covering him. Second Tiger on the right! How many tanks we need to kill before enemy run out of steam? I had to move back, defending that entrance is too risky. Moved back to damaged Panther to repair and refuel my tank. Another captured tank was moved here to cover Panther crew. Just look how many weapons are there, heh. We fixed tracks on that Tiger, but i will not use it anymore, no ammo left and repleneshing them will take a lot of time (heavy and big ammo). Spoiler ... Because it is easier just to fix one of not-terribly damaged Tigers and use it instead, haha. Now i move this new trophy to remaining part of town outskirts to clear it. Stug shouldn't be much of a problem. Oww shit, King Tiger in our sights! I fired HE shell that was already loaded to immobilize that thing and started to move back, out of LOS of that tank. Stug is trying to flank our Tiger from the right flank. I had good spot to cover tank's sides and cought this TD. KT have serious chances to penetrate any tank i have under my command, so getting this vehicle destroyed will take some time and risk. Panther will act as support and cover Tiger's rear zone. First hit didn't managed to take KT out. Slow turret rotation speed allows us to do follow up shots. I waited for a moment when turret will be facing far away from us to do my move. Tiger was parked at almost maxium range and angled to improve chances to survive 88mm L71 cannon shot. And it is out of action, after 3rd hit. That was rather risky, gun is almost pointing at my Tiger. At this point German defenses are collapsing. In the start of this mission this town was perfectly fine and clean French city... LoooSeR
Operation number 4 in US campaign. This one is smaller scale, we need to silence German artillery in our sector. Spoiler HQ building that we need to raid. We wll clear this area to stage attack on HQ building. Artillery is located to N-E/N-W from us. Spoiler First patrol to take out. Sneaky hand grenade Reinforcements arrived to HQ building. 1 soldier was sended to recon opportunities for capturing SPG Immobilizing German armored car Haha, chain detonation from troop transport to armored 4x4. Clearing outside area Meanwhile... Patrol nearby heard me, arrived to be blown up QRF is also here. Using small bump between me and QRF to sneak closer. Quite risky, there are patrols going on the road to the left from Robert. Spoiler Cleared. After inspecting SPG i found out that it doesn't have fuel and i can't find firing solution against enemy HQ or other artillery pieces. Second one actually might have this ability, thanks to its positioning. I left that gun emplacement to ambush this patrol car. That was perfect, haha. Hand grenade carrier is incoming! That guy looks like seriously wants to fight with me. I was jumping around and running in and out of that wooden bunker to avoid MG bursts. Finally managed to catch them. Another QRF... Seeing how good progress was in the north, and a fact that one guy there needs fire support from all those QRFs, 2 others were ordered to move to N. One of 223s that were knocked out was captured for fire support job. After they were cleared, Hummel was captured. Direct hit with Hummel's 150mm gun SdKfz-223 is keeping QRFs away from my artillery-men Now to the last artillery piece. More reinforcements are coming here, but i already captured rocket launcher. And we are done!
LoooSeR
Last American operation - bridge defense Spoiler Not wasting time - trying to clear areas near bridge as much as possible before main enemy forces arrive. Fixing damaged Panzer 4 Managed to fix it in time to ambush first group of attackers Had to leave this tank, but all enemies from first group were destroyed. 2nd attack group moving to Eastern bridge Spoiler But i managed to put a minefield before enemies arrived. Sneaking troops to other coast on Western bridge German infantry managed to break through minefield King Tiger and Pz4 are moving to Eastern side. Flanking group is going to secure left flank Spoiler Tiger and King Tiger with support of Panzer 4 and infantry Damn, missed this shot. That was lucky hit ... that was surprising chain detonation from 1 hit... and mission is done, hahaha.
LoooSeR
German campaign. You are playing as very historically accurate Tiger tank commander named Michael Whittman, who laughs maniacally from his commander's hatch at pesky American and British tanks. Mission 1. Spoiler Main forces of Yanks are on the other side of the river. But our task now is to hide from air. Now we need to clear out enemy outpost without using tanks and destroy vehicle with long range radio. Michael Whittman personally participating in this attack! So brave! So historically accurate! Spoiler Michael Whittman personally chucking grenades at Tommies and getting Triple kills! Second team is trying to find entry point through the river. 2 AT guns are defending this zone, so sneaky grenades are not so terrible solution. Tommies were triggered, but gunned down by MG ambush. Sneaked MG gunner into a house near entrance to this farm. If half-track will try to drive through the bridge, he will stop it with AT grenade. House clearing with AT grenades. Time to move in. 1st grenade took out almost everyone inside, except gunner. At this point mission was done.
LoooSeR
2nd mission. Ambush of Allies armor convoy. We are preparing to meet our guests. Spoiler Soldiers are also prepared. US recons are coming in. Main forces are coming. Spoiler Tiger lost one track, we are immobilized. That was easy... we will fix tracks and get last AFV, which is SPG. And done. LoooSeR
3rd operation. This time it is more serious, as we are tasked with taking small town. Missions begins with friendly tank getting hit by a rocket from Bazooka. Spoiler Starting action with 88 mm gun shot against British steelboxes, i want to clear area around damaged Pz4 and look if we can repair it. Spoiler On the lft flank more American and UK armor. Saving private Ryan? I think result is obvious. Tried to sneak trigger RPG shot, so i can locate where this asshole is. He is overwatching Pz4, so we must finish him to secure our damaged tank. We repaired Pz4, but not much ammunition left in it. We will search for a tank that will donate some of shells. Found source of ammo. And fuel! Going for left fanking attack. Hmm... we can try to repair one of those damaged tanks. Spoiler Will try to surprise it and drive through the wall Had to use several AP rounds because of tricky angle. Trying to get to next Sherman and hit it from the back. Next victim. Now path to enemy rear is open. Next shot took out this M4. Using car wreckage for additional protection Our tank was hit, but we lost only right tracks. I wanted to repair it, but enemy tank was firing non-stop, couldn't risk crewmembers. So this fight became Gears of War like exchange, heh. We both couldn't penetrate opposing tank. I noticed that if shells hit AFV closer to edge of the hull, vehicle rotates slightly. Decided to use that effect and "turn" enemy enough to get good angle at side hull plates. About 10 shots later... Enemy reinforcements incoming from Eastern side of town. Time to put Tiger into use. Spoiler Reinforcements are totally destroyed But our Tiger broke down! More enemies are coming to this town. Tiger lost engine in rather bad spot, areas around full of cover for enemies. Jeep with MG was driving nearby until this moment, heh. Nice fireworks, though. Once main sources of danger to Tiger were destroyed, started to work on retreat route. Using captured M4 with 76 mm gun to clear central part of this small town from soldiers with RPGs, to secure path to a Tiger. Spoiler Will carry those guys to Pz4 and we will drive back, to extraction point. And we are out of this town.

LoooSeR
Mission 4. We need to punch through US/UK defense line. Spoiler Trying flanking attack from the right, don't want to go head on. Spoiler AT gun is done Using this hill as a good firing position Reinforcements arrive. Crew dismounted to grab some of knock out tanks. Ambushing more enemy tanks from right flank 2nd AT gun is hit with HE. Crew of a 2nd tank is scavenging for weapons, if bad situation drops on us. Spoiler Tiger is almost done with first line. Second reinforcements is getting hit Time to collect trophies! Starting to work on second line of defenses using captured and repaired Sherman with 76mm gun. More enemy tanks come in, now from the left side. We have pretty good position and they have their sides exposed to our cannons. Was kind of lucky to be detracked instead of blown up, as tanks managed to turn their frontal armor towards my Sherman. They weren't as much lucky as i was, heh. Re-filling my tank after repair was complete. More enemy tanks are coming in, but i have enough ammunition to be trigger happy. 2nd defensive line is almost clear, not much enemies are left. I'm trying to save Tiger as next mission might take into account what i have in the end of this operation. Spoiler Frontal engagement is not relaible, i'm going for a flank. During it US soldier with bazooka fired his rocket, it missed our tank. That bazooka gunner is now turn into pieces. Next one is also killed. Last reinforcements are charging in. Too many enemies at once are attacking. Tiger is needed here to cover Sherman from infantry and flanking attacks by other tanks. And it is done. LoooSeR
Last mission of German campaign and Behind enemy lines game as a whole. Our task - get to this Tiger, repair it, capture this town. Spoiler As usual - clearing area slowly with small bites. Tiger catching Matilda. Spoiler Meanwhile infantry is clearing territory from AT guns, to give a space for our armor. Oops... i wanted this gun. Time to reload of save file. 57 mm gun, but HE are not terrible. Clearing a path to right flank. Sneaked AT grenade before tank managed to smash a wall. Infantry will try to assault this place because of explosion. Clearing houses from snipers to allow some space deeper into a town. Last round fired from 57 mm gun. Tiger smashed this gun, we have a damaged British armor box to repair and utilize. lol Starting flanking attack with British armor box. Spoiler Can't penetrate this Sherman from this range. Detracked it, and went futher to next targets. HE from the rear against AT guns is enjoyable - targer is destroyed quickly and reliably. Minus another AT gun. Tiger finished detracked Sherman. Time to change Bong box to Sherman with 76 mm gun. New tank is brought back to life and refueled from Bong box with low energy peashooter. Time to finish clearing outskirts. Spoiler Starting to clear central part of this town from infantry (bazooka gunners, snipers) AT gun behind this tank is also finished. Town is clear, Tiger is in and we are preparing to repair broken Tiger. Spoiler Mounting US MG on Tiger because of 200 rounds box. US and UK troops are attacking. Preparing for next wave. While i was in direct control of 2nd Tiger, first one (with Whitman) was destroyed. Decided to leave this like that and not use save files. Finally, mission is over and reinforcements arrived! Fun fact - if you will stay in mission, another wave of Allies armor will try to attack (composition will be same as before).
LoooSeR
Next game - Behind Enemy Lines 2. Will start with USSR singleplayer, after that - Allies and then German. First operation - capture depo/railroad station. Spoiler First line of German army defense. In this mission we have only 1 way to progress. Snipers are very capable at reliably taking out infantry in direct mode. You need to wait when "aiming circle" will fill up to deliver 100% accurate shot. Spoiler Jumped into this Pz4 and used MG on top of it against enemy. Tank itself is not repairable (note grey part on schematics in HUD), but partially functioning. Molotov is much more efficient against new MGs with armor plates compared to small arms. My group captured enemy position. Troops under your command are displayed on the left. You can orginise them into squads, or leave as a single guy. Took MG from Panzer 4. House internals got some additional details. Although some textures are missing as part of optimisation of assets modelling. Now we must go through this bridge, because of mission and level design. MG burst wounded enemy and sended barrels away. AI received new abilities - self-healing. When they feel they are safe - they will try to heal. Thats why you need to take them out for sure. Level design have some Call of Duty feeling. We can progress only through this small exposed bridge and enemies are located in such way that they will spot enemies on bridge and will fire, but only when you get to the bridge. Your soldiers also can do that, sometimes on their own. Train arrived with some MG gunners on some of train car. Bag full of Faustpatrons/Panzerfausts Stationary MGs can be moved by crew of 2. ...but not all of obsticles are crossable for this MG team. Scripted scene of bridge being destroyed. I starting to not like this mission. We are placed in small space that funnels us into big group of enemies, which can be cleared only by sniper and cheesing. Spoiler Sniper working from almost max effective range of his weapon. AI have problems dealing with such situations. Starting to advance into depo. Enemy hard point. Tried to find a place to move MG through corridor level design... Both died, heh. Time to load save files. Map looks big and open, but in fact mission design s linear and pretty scripted. MG nest is now supporting rest of troops. Clearing area inside of this building. Done with clearing, moving to next target. Meanwhile in other part of the map scripted assault by Soviet troops is fighting non-stop with german soldiers. Spoiler Sniper is slowly crawling to a tank, using boxes to stay out of their sight. Will try to hit this defensive line from behind. They have 2 88 mm guns, could be useful. Enemies also can use sewers hatches as a cover/firing position, but this is very rare. Enemies reacted with suppressive fire. Molotov is capable to take out AFVs. MG is moved to support my attempts to take out this defensive line. MG will be located just outside of their LOS and weapons range, but enough for attacking troops to retreat, if needed. Grenades, lots of them. Group of enemies spawned on left flank... thanks, scripted mission design. Soldier is running back. Soldier lost consciousness from damage. He will get back in some time. There are not enough grenades. Line is cleared, scripted soldiers don't know what to do. Spoiler Another group of enemies spawned on the left flank, long burst from PPSh cleared them. Invisible scripts of this mission clicked, Soviet soldiers under control of level designer started to run futher, all in the same time. Armored train with lots of guns arrived to support Germans. Well well well, 88 mm cannons have almost no AP rounds, and train is out of max range of those guns. Reason - to force players to do scripted event that was voiced by soldiers (take other train with fuel and park it next to armored train). So i'm aiming at this object and rely on inaccuracy of 88mm gun at this range to shell train (almsot inderect fire, lol). Jumped on other gun in attempt to find better angle to sneak HE round. Meanwhile my other group that was moving to second train loaded with fuel encountered more enemies spawned just near the place through which we have the only way to get to out objective. This mission is becoming annoying. Sniper is clearing spawned enemy snipers. on left flank. Jumped into this locomotive, but we were spotted (i was risking, but decided to not bother with more clearing, was affraid to trigger more spawns of enemy cannon meat). Germans are attacking, with support of 20 mm autocannon. Running back, other soldiers are covering. Infantry is suppressing our LKP. After some shooting those guys decided to move back. This is new AI ability compared to previous Behind Enemy Lines - to retreat, and retreat as a squad. I'm affraid that another burst from this ting will take out locomotive. Time to cheese this game, bring sniper here! Enemies spotted our movement and decided to take us seriously. Sniper started to do his job. That thing would be useful, but only 220 rounds in this thing. This Flak gun also can be moved by crew. Cleared with flak gun and finishing with hand grenade. Path is open for our train. 3rd line of defense, behind armored train. Spoiler Not exactly sure how he will stop Soviet forces advances with this thing, but lets leave him alone... Train is moving More enemies tried to attack (scripted assault), troopers managed to kill all of them. After big kaboom part of this train survived and Soviet forces jumped into them to use against enemies. Enemies received some reinforcements. Train was put back to life, now my soldier is driving it. Will try to move it closer to German last defensive line. Dealing with troops on left flank. On the right everything is fine. Not surprising, they have tank support and much more infantry. Last rounds are getting out the barrel of that flak gun. Decided to see what this group of my soldiers will do if ordered to attack enemies on far corner of white building. Hmm... not the best solution. I would say it was rather dumb one. Arrived just in time to finish last enemy tank. Most of defense line is clear. Mission complete. Enemies lost 201 soldiers and 13 AFVs, we lost 53 and 10 accordingly.
LoooSeR
Review of the Behind Enemy Lines. Behind Enemy Lines (or "Soldiers: Heroes of World War II" for Western markets) is an RTS game set in WW2 released in 2004, made by Ukrainian company Best Way using their own "GEM" engine. BEL focused on small-scale operations, most of which are happening… behind enemy lines (how surprising). You will be able to command wide range of units, including directly (which was one of many selling points of this title). BEL was released in the same year as many other big titles, and for me it was on par or even more enjoyable than some of them. My gaming year of 2004 started with a visceral Painkiller, after it I played Far Cry, continued with cathartic and smart Behind Enemy lines, ended up 2004 with DooM 3 and Half-Life 2. For me, BEL stands in one list with all those big games of 2004 and this review should explain why. Spoiler Presentation For 2004 RTS game Behind Enemy Lines had good graphics, excellent physics simulation, good level of animations and details (even if some small objects in few places were just sprites, haha). Almost all maps have saturated enough colors, making picture to look juicy/vibrant, even a bit “toy-ish” in some moments. Sound and music were also well done, supporting visual side of this game. When things are moving and interacting, it is where Behind Enemy Lines really shined back in 2004, and probably still is able to deliver fun moments today. A lot of objects in this game had a physics model and other aspects of them modelled, allowing to rather impressive level of interaction between objects. When I first played this game, first 76 mm HE shell from T-34 that hit German 75 mm AT gun created a big explosion, throwing parts of the gun in different directions, setting grass and houses on fire. Screaming nazi soldiers started to run out of those houses, while their roofs collapsed into the buildings, bringing chaos into enemy defense line in the village. I was laughing at that moment really hard, it was delightful! No other RTS could provide such experience back in the day. Game had detailed building destruction system that allowed to level whole maps and city blocks. Debris and parts of destroyed houses, vehicles, installations were not de-spawned from level, but left on the field for entire game session. This game presentation allowed to wreak havoc and see results, making combat feel more impactful. BEL is better to be played than watched, IMO, as a lot of fun player can get by interacting with game mechanics. Spoiler Gameplay Behind Enemy Lines is system-driven small scale sandbox RTS with ability to directly controls units under you command. You command small number of soldiers that are given an objective and no define way to deal with it. You choose how to solve problems using many systems in this game. All soldiers and vehicles have an inventory system. Humans have stamina bars that can be recharged by resting, vehicles need fuel to drive. To fire a gun, trooper need to have a proper ammunition type (SMG ammo, MG belts, rifle catridges, etc) in his inventory. Cannons need proper caliber shells and so on. Humans can have protective gear in form of helmets and steel breastplates. Tanks have armor and game takes into account armor layout, range, angle and type of shell that hits it and so on during penetration calculations. Vehicles don’t have HPs, BTW, so there is some level of realism and nuance to ballistic system. Spoiler Environment also plays a big role in this sandbox. Soldiers can take cover behind any object using dynamic cover system, troops can hide in bushes or grass/trees. Vegetation and wooden structures can be set on fire, fire can spread through materials that can burn. Weak structures can be knocked out by explosion of hand grenades, small vehicles driving through. More sturdy buildings can survive that, so they need a bigger caliber guns/cannons or bigger vehicle/tank to be damaged. Buildings takes damage in sections (no HP bar as well). And there are more of mechanics that are in the game, like wheeled vehicles drive slower on bad types of soil/terrain, etc. Spoiler You can take cover behind physics objects, system tries to figure out their height and will make soldier kneel/stand depending on cover height. Triangle on this pic means soldier will fire from crouch position. All troops in cover - standing, couching, behind corners. You can grab chickens and throw them in this game, lmao. House clearing with hand grenades. Part of sandbox is how your troops can interact with vehicles or gear. Game have a lot of different vehicles and different weapons modelled. Vehicles have modules modelled – firing bullets into cargo hold will not stop a truck, but if you aim your fire against engine or wheels (or driver) – it will. Tanks can lose tracks from explosions close and powerful enough, but will not lose ability to fire a gun. Turrets on AFVs can be jammed by hits, while rest of the vehicle continue to work, if hit was not powerful enough. Bigger AFVs can smash small and unarmored vics (like civilian cars or tractors). Each vehicle needs a crew to work, crew number and role depends on what vehicle is it. If number of crew members is not enough for given vehicle (3 people crewing 5-man tank, for example) some of soldiers would need to jump from his place to another place in the vehicle to do the job of lacking members. It means that vehicle would not be able to do several things in the same time, which it would be able to do if it had full crew. For example if you don’t have a loader in a tank, a gunner would be forced to load a main gun, during which tank would not be able to rotate turret and aim at enemies or use coaxial MG. Spoiler Capturing new tank, using armored car crew to fill empty seats inside of that German tank. Checking knocked out german tank. Repairing those medium tanks to use against nazis. Fully loaded and ready to go. All this sounds rather complicated, but it is rather easy to learn and get how it works, as game doesn’t overcomplicate those things. There are no spreadsheets of buttons that you need to learn, no special menus to go through each time you get a vehicle with crew members jobs or something similar. Some of things game solves on its own, which make player’s life easier and leaves his attention open for actual gameplay that is based on interaction of those systems. Final piece of this sandbox are enemies. They are ok when it comes to tactics, but where developers really put their time are AI capabilities tied to effects of other systems. All enemy soldiers have simulated vision/hearing systems, they don’t telepathically sense casualties of their forces if they don’t hear it or see it. Enemies also use same dynamic cover system as a player. Bad guys use same equipment as a player’s controlled soldiers. AI knows how to drive cars, trucks, tanks, AFVs, half-tracks, use static MGs and cannons and so on. AI behavior support stealth gameplay, making it much less OP then in some other games (including FPS/3rd person shooters). Depending on amount of noise you make and damage done, enemies will react differently – from small investigation by few guys of bushes and tall grass around their positions to full scale assault with tank support. Enemies can blind fire into vegetation if they know that you are there (heard a shot, or saw/heard grenade), but can’t see your soldier directly. Even tanks can do that, BTW. This means you can’t sit on one place after making some ruckus, even if it is technically a cover or hide spot. AI reacts to fire, trying to get away from big fires. Enemies, when it comes to open fight, are rather generic, but still are able to be dangerous, even if you drive a well-armored vehicle. Spoiler Blind throwing of grenades - enemies are not sure where exactly my soldier is, but they have some idea where he is. Search team. When you do something very shameless, like exploding troop transport, enemies can unload whole magazines and belts into everything in your direction. When they don't have cover and under fire, enemies are trying to crawl their way to cover, or you (if they are attacking) Different systems of BEL are coming together to form a sandbox RTS, with open-style objectives (you are not forced down overscripted path of execution of given mission). You are free to make your own plan. Meat of BEL gameplay is coming with plans using all mentioned above systems and trying to execute those plans, then trying to quickly fix/react to situations when they fail and a “cockup cascade” erupts, haha. This style of gameplay is very enjoyable for me. I’m not mad when I lose, thanks to ability to save as much as you want – quickly load saved game and do something else instead, to avoid a mistake. Trial and error approach allows to experience plenty of different events during just one level. And a flavor on top of all that is direct control feature. It allows to control units like in 3rd person shooter (although with RTS-style camera) and execute some actions that would be hard to do using indirect classic RTS control scheme. This feature also works as steam release when you take a tank under control and start to spread destruction and chaos by our own hands, using destroyable buildings/physics/etc to your advantage. First time I did that, it was simply glorious. Conclusion Sandbox WW2-themed RTS with big number of detailed and intertwined game mechanics, enriched with physcis, cool special effects, tense stealth, visceral action and overthought plans of how to break through enemy positions. Best experienced in 1 mission per play session, use save features often, don’t be afraid to experiment and making new attempts if you failed to do something first time. For me BEL is one of the best “small-scale” RTS games I ever played. N-L-M
LoooSeR
Behind Enemy Lines 2, 2nd mission for USSR. Spoiler Our troops got ambushed. Quickly dismounted my infantry to find better place to fight with half-track. Hip firing PTRD, lol. Vehicles are well modelled for 2006 RTS. German officer was captured to get some information. Preapring troops for main operation - looks like we are going to attack warehouses. Going to the battle with all the medals. Defense line that protects warehouses and a hill from which we need to radio to take to support main attack against enemy positions further. Spoiler Not bad position. This is my sniper. I separated my troops based on their role - sniper and AT specialist, and some others, depending on their weapon and equipment. Time to prepare our equipment and troops for operation. Our lend-lease half tracks lack MGs on them. Which is fixed by mounting a trophy MG, haha. I have just 5 soldiers, each with different weapon. Now we are scavanging for ammunition, grenades, medical stuff and so on. MG gunner is armored, for better survivability. Starting to move to enemy secondary defense line near storage of ammunition. Hill that we need to take, just behind secondary defense line. It will help to attack main defense line from the flank. Main defensive line - with trenches and positions for tanks. This is very hard position to crack without support. Spoiler Starting operation. My plan is to trigger enemies to attack us or at least leave their positions in attempt to find us after. Germans sended their half track after my M2 killed 2 patroling soldiers. Rest of troops are using captured half-track as movable armored MG nest to cover rear and work as retreat pont/back up position. While M2 on the left flank is staying in cover in attempt to ambush any attempt to attack us through main road, sniper is moving to harass enemies in the middle section. That will trigger their attention. After each shot i'm moving sniper closer to second APC. Managed to get that sniper to move out of his position. Now we are much closer to our trophy half-track. I dsimounted soldiers out of it, as it is way to easy to see and placed troops in bushes and grass, to ambush search teams/attackers. Sniper switched to his MP-40, as enemies are very close and sniper rifle reloads way to slow for such short ranges firefights. Enemies heard shots from MP-40 and thrown a hand grenades that i didn't noticed. Soldiers in BEL2 don't immidietly die from nearby explosions (if they were not powerful), but lose health and sometimes - consciousness, like in this case. After some bandaging, sniper is back into action. Killed last soldier from that search team. I think this is enough for 1 soldier, haha. Soldiers that were waiting near trophy half-track. After probing right flank, it appears that working from left is going to be a bit easier. At least AT guns have not that much of view on it. Sniper needs time to aim his shot well enough. I think this is becoming risky... AT gun shell that landed into house next to my sniper and M2 told me to fuck off this place. Sniper will jump into solid cover, while M2 will emerge to deal with counter-attack. Infantry is going to be an easy targer for our armored vic. Managed to dome enemy MG gunner. Left flank is clear-ish. We can try again to deal with middle section. Middle section of that secondary defensive line prepared for an attack from their flank. Spoiler I'm going to lure troops again by firing sniper rifle at some random enemy soldier. They will think they deal with just a sniper and will get right into line of fire of my AFV. MG gunner jumped into house while that riflemen jumped into shell crater to dodge my shot. Mg gunner appeared from a door on the right and started to blast everything in my direction. Here, have an AT grenade. Rest of troops arrived to help with this push from left flank. Now i can cross this road and hit some of enemies on the right flank from the back. Like that one. Trying to sneak from rear part of warehouse to deal with AT guns, as their armor shields are facing different direction they should be easier to deal from here. 1 crew member survived on that 75 mm gun, time to change positions, and fast. Catched that AT gun crew from different side with sniper shot. Enemies abandoned positions, you can barely see last one, fleeing. 2 AT guns, 2 half-tracks... Hmmmmm... Here, new feature of BEL2. Suck it, Arma! With our new trophies we can go to our next objective. Front right wheel on that half-track is damaged, but vehicle is still ok. Spoiler Warehouse was demolished, enemies are going to conduct counter-attack. We need to prepare to fight with them ASAP. They are already here! AFVs are bying time for sniper to get to a hill with abandoned ZiS-3 76 mm gun. more enemy armor is coming our way. Half-tracks are dealing with infantry that attacked us from a hill on our right flank. HE shell hit AT gun, but our shot penetrated that Panzer 4. Gun is still working, but crew is unconscious. Oh, shit, Panther on our right flank! That was close... lost 1 gun, but everybody is ok. We just found ourselfs in the middle of enemy counter-attack and managed to get through it, thanks to captured AT guns and their quick deployment. We are done here, time to pack our shit and move, main attack just started and we are late. Main attack started, enemies are using their rocket artillery to pressure our allies. We need to deal with rear-echelon forces to help them. Spoiler Soviet armor is pressuring enemies head on, we can work on enemy forces in the rear. Second gun is going to be moved here by hand, as it is pretty close to this hill. I'm preparing a position from which we will attack German troops rear. What the fuck? it appears that AI now got new ability - non-scripted/dynamic artillery support. Those rocket launchers are not just cosmetic things, heh. I didn't expected that, time for save files use. Located 2 nearest rocket launchers, HE is loaded on that ZiS-3. First one is out of action. Minus second one. Infantry is sworming 3rd one, shelled that area until 3rd one exploded into pieces. Panzer 4 was disctracted by T-34s, so i was able to put an AP round into it. Few reamining nazi soldiers here are being dealt with by AT guns. Heh, one survived. That thing can be useful. Clearing few troops to our left to secure our hill by shelling them with 76 and 75 mm HE rounds. Some of our tanks are already knocked out. Shot reaming german here, time to grab that system and use against our enemies. Driver will work with rocket system, while MG gunner will cover him. Last "Raketen-Werfer" is smashed into pieces. Buhahaha! Explosions are just throwing that tank around like a toy. Last 2 rockets finished it. Results - 117 enemy soldiers were killed and 11 AFVs destroyed. Our side lost 61 and 7 (during head on assault by frinedly forces).
LoooSeR
3rd mission was long and multi-stage, so i'm breaking it into 4 parts. Part 1: Our convoy hit enemy blockpost. We are tasked to penetrate through their defenses and make a radio contact with rest of forces. Spoiler Troops under my command. Radio is on this GAZ. Starting to organise forces. On this level fog of war is in play. Starting to flank left to find a route around German blocking position on the road. Spoiler On our right flank we have a river and i'm pretty sure that houses near it are packed with German infantry. Bridge in the middle, enemy MGs and other forces are not visible because of the fog of war. On the left we have this river crossing. Looks like a not bad place to get to other side. Germans positioned their infantry in greenhouses on left side of the road. Slowly moving my 2 best equipped soldiers to those greenhouses. Moved other troops slightly forward to work as overwatch. Starting to clear greenhouses from long range. Enemy decided to attack us, probably they thought that there are only few of us here. 2 MG gunners were enough to quickly stop this small attack. Position is secured, very first row of enemies is dead. Rest of nazis decided to sit in their spots and wait for us. Not surprising that they don't want to push forward anymore, heh. Lots of red dots on the map, road is full of hostile infantry and prepared MG positions. Will be hard to push through head on. Spoiler Looting dead bodies to get more ammunition and hand grenades for my attackers. Now my 2 "SF" guys have steel breastplates and German helmets for increased protection. Self-propelled cover, haha. Now this is my defensive line to retreat if shit becomes to dense to go through. This place is my best bet to flank German checkpoint full of MG gunners and prepared defensive positions with sandbags. Spoiler Some of enemy infantry is sitting in bushes behind greenhouses, they are covering rear path to checkpoint from left flank. So it is time to flash enemies out of greenhouses! Duel with hand grenades with German soldier. Cooking grenades long enough to give enemies almost no time to react. Last one is dead. Now we can try to dislodge enemies from this hardened position. Spoiler My first attempt failed, soldier opened fire from his MG. Will try a bit later. Airbursting grenades! Hit and Run. Enemy grenade exploded far enough from my soldier, but it war pretty close to his position before he ran back. Now we have break in their defenses to sneak to. Bridge is defended pretty well. MG shield partially protected gunner from blast. He is still alive, but knocked out. Getting away from my LKP, enemies are pushing it. Another grenade from bushes into my last position, just to thin out enemies. Overwatch is finishing survivors. Should work as both cover and concealment. Moving back to clear stationary MG emplacement. Enemies from this house on the right have eyes on the road, they could be a problem. Spoiler Last MG emplacement behind main checkpoint is cleared. At this point our side of the river is clear-ish. Not going to get to close to the bridge. Last German soldier is trying to get out of this coast of the river. That is spicy HMG, waiting me to use it... My "SF" team is shifting to the right. My main forces are going set up blocking position and keep bridge area under control if enemies will decide to counter-attack us head-on. Searching for good approach. One of snipers overlooking road and now empty checkpoint. Spoiler Starting to work on this enemy-occupied group of houses. Decided to hit this house first as it have less troops in it and clearing should be quick enough to get into building before rest of enemies will do anything. Managed to get to house outer walls. German party bus arrived full of MGs covering ~250-270 degrees and 37 mm cannon watching forward. Just great, and i have only 2 soldiers here! Peeling back, enemies are pushing as hard. Crawling to river under suppressive MG fire. Germans are pushing to river as well, trying to find us. They are grenading place where they think we are. My soldiers just managed to get away from it. They are both wounded, we can't continue without serious risk of losing both troopers. That is some serious battlebus stuff. It is pushing to river coast as well. i managed to pull both of my recon troops out of this shit. Area just behind the bridge have serious defenses. And i don't like this wire thing... Spoiler So they just destroyed this bridge. I'm okay with that, now they don't have a way to push armor on this side of the river! Moving my recon guys back, as battlebus halftrack moved to other place. Now i'm more carefull in this part of the map, it can be reached by hostile armored vehicles and there is not that much of hard cover to hold on. In case of enemies pushing me hard again, parked with motorcycle with HMG on it, for flanking fire. Should be obscured by trees and bushes until it is too late for nazis. This house is still going to be a major problem so far. Sneaking a soldier closer to that house full of snipers. WIll try to grenade it. Recon troops are clearing damaged house. Enemies are pushing to source of fire. Decided to let them pass, recon guys should be able to handle those 2. After 2 attempts to land frag grenade into this building and receiving fire from it i decided to go for more... destructive option. I horded plenty of AT grenades from dead nazis around, hehe. That pair came back and ate a burst from MP40. Continue to "fold" this house. Finishing survivors. Dismounted HMG. This is going to be usefull. Moving my team to half-leveled house. Right flank now looks like legit approach for infantry. Spoiler I'm worried about that party half truck. Need to find better place to combat it. And it is not that far from our location. Sniper rifle in damaged house will be usefull, while that half track is looking in other direction and gunners on those MGs are unalerted. We have serious bush concealment between and and parked party bus. This can be very advantageous, if halftrack is not too far. HAHAHA! LoooSeR
Part 2. Party bus is empty, but not damaged and can be used. Spoiler Our sabotage team is still getting contacts. After clearing them, will try to capture half track. Now path further is open. A lot of enemies are near empty halftrack. I decided to clear bridge area first, as MG gunners could do some damage to my flanking team, if they will try to capture partybus. Displaced in right time - enemy have cannons somewhere. Germans are assaulting this small area from where i grenaded MG gunner. Recon AFV arrived as reinforcement. Germans are pushing our side of the river from right as well. My MG team is placed on the right in case if Germans will try to push right flank harder. Spoiler SF team started to clear this compound I think they are very angry with me... And it is good this soldier carried fully-loaded PPSh with him and had steel breastplate. Grenade spamming of this house, almost done with right flank. This place is mostly clear. Whole area looks like a not bad approach to bridge checkpoint. Kind of affraid of 75 mm cannon there, but buildings around should be not bad cover. Preparing for my next move. Now i will try to capture that halftrack. 75 mm AT gun could be a problem, vehicle is in firing range of that cannon. Spoiler Now there are 2 armored cars parked near bridge, one of which lost wheels from my previous grenade attacks. AT grenades are really powerful, but they have shorter range than frags. 2nd AFV is very angry with us. Perfect positioning. Sniper is finishing infantry support leftovers. Another wave of German infantry counter-attack. They counter-attacked right into my ambush! 2nd guy managed to get out of blast area... Heh, secondary explosion took him out. We destroyed enemy light armor and infantry that supported it and path is now wide open. Sniper is clearing backyard of houses next to checkpoint, i want to get behind AT gun and close enough for frags. Spoiler That thing is in the way! I really like how things explode in this game. No sneaking through water to my coast! I want to capture that cannon, it will be usefull. A little bit of grenades inside should help to clear this area enough to push with small arms. Cannon crew decided to not wait for direct LOS, heh. We need to get the hell out of here. At least it managed to take out German infantry as well! 2nd soldier is knocked out... 75 mm gun made a new pathway through that building. Chaning tactics - will try to hot AT gun crew from different place. Terrain should protect us from direct fire, i just hope we are in range for frags. Almost! They are obviously not sure where my handgrenade came to AT gun. Cannon and armor shield is turned to my soldier, my previous frag was on the edge of throwing range and now i will not be able to sneak it to gun crew. Time to hit it from different angle, again. Spoiler Managed to find a spot from which sniper delivered precise shot. Excellent! MG gunner that was standing next to AT gun decided to get away from checkpoint. Starting to exploit a gap in enemy defense. Managed to aggro those guys. Preparing AT grenade for halftrack. Waiting. Can't fire small arms to avoid detection of exact location. They don't know where i am exactly, their mistake! SF team is finishing last enemies near checkpoint on right flank. My MG fireteam is moving to Partybus, it is secured as 75 mm gun is out of action. Leaving next phase for Part 3.
LoooSeR
Part 3. Continue to clear other side of the river with my infantry. Spoiler Meanwhile i collect some useful weaponry from dead nazis. 2nd line of defenses on the main road - another 75 mm gun and infantry. Partybus arrived to clear left side of main road. My SF team is moved back to cover AT gun from flanking attempts. Firing at a position of German Pak40. Enemy armored car on the left appeared from fog of war, it is too close. And it got damaged. Infantry assault will be stopped with big amount of HE shells. Lucky HE shot took out enemy 75mm gun. Enemy armored car arriving again and received some AP attention. Enemy assault gun appeared from same spot where armored car tried to play with us. How many of those nazis are there? 2 AFVs, 1 assault gun and bunch of infantry was taken out, and area is still not clear... Spoiler MG gunners from my partybus are now running around and collecting belts, as we need a lot of ammunition. Now our halftrack is ready for attack. We have a small gap in enemy assault, will use it to decrease their numbers. One of crewmembers was hit badly, now fixing himself behind armored car wreck We mostly finished clearing area near the river, time to use our advantage in armor. Preparing to grab another gun or take ammunition from it if it is too damaged. Some Germans are still sneaking around, but are not trying to assault. German halftrack is trying to advance to our positions, but a surprise awaits just behind armored car husk. Driving that thing is like controlling a battleship. We now have plenty of time to move our Gaz-67 with radio closer to objective. Spoiler And fix damaged vehicles Sadly, it received damage that can't be fixed. Parked my radio vehicle in greenhouses, will try to recon river crossing before using it. Another halftrack got itself destroyed. Pushing to river crossing to clear it. Spoiler Moving shells from 2nd gun to our cannon. Another german armored coffin destroyed itself by driving straight into LOS of my 75mm. Clearing dismounted infantry. Second attempt to clear river crossing. We are moving back, as more enemies are getting here. Securing area for radio jeep. Here we need to park our car with radio to get necessary signal Clearing the way to hill. Gun controls main road, SF team is sneaking between houses and gardens to hunt down shattered forces of enemy in the area. Manual aim works pretty well with sniper rifle. SF team continue to go through backyards. Recon team found enemy Stug defending hill. Germans are sitting in cover away from us. Hehe. Entry to the hill is open. Next phase of this operation in the next part.
LoooSeR
Part 4: Onslaught of German heavy armor We made a radio contact with our main forces and now they are under my command. We have a defensive line of AT guns and infantry ready for upcoming attack of tanks and other AFVs. Captured vehicles are used to cover left flank, near a hill with radio-carrier jeep. Spoiler First contact with nazi infantry. 2nd captured gun is also moved to main line for additional firepower. Enemies on left flank are moving in big numbers with armor support. Dismounted infantry from party bus after it was hit. Damaged partybus became a pretty good cover for AT gun, allowing it to deal with enemy armor in more controlled way. Panther and Pz4 are moving on the road between my left flank forces and main defensive line. I have AT gun right there in bushes for such situation. Meanwhile situation on left flank is hectic. Tiger is firing against AT gun possible position, i hope halftrack is going to stop Tiger's shell. He probably had HE loaded, heh. Left flank is under very heavy pressure. Spoiler Infantry is also supporting AT guns with use of German Panzershrecks 75 mm PaK40 is destroyed, but ZiS-3 76 mm guns are still active. That is a lot of destroyed armor... Another AT gun is destroyed, i doubt my troops can hold this flank anymore. Another wave. All AT guns here a lost, can't hold this flank. On right flank there is nothing serious to fight with. Trying to evac survivors of this endless armor push. Left flank is completely overrun and enemy is moving for my main defense line. Spoiler Attack is started. Infantry is not under my command, so they act not in the way i wanted. That is not going to be good defense. Tiger dropped infantry and now pushing my defenses from exposed left flank. Captured German 150 mm artillery piece will try to clear our rear from few enemy infantry soldiers that got there. Sadly, i have only few shells for it. Enemy is now pushing both flanks. 150mm HE at least will stop that Tiger for some time, we need to get out as defense line is falling apart. Enemies are enveloping remaining troops from left flank. It is finished at this point. Last AT gun is done. I'm moving survivors to 2nd defense line. 2nd defense line. We have a bit more time to prepare for German attack. Spoiler All troops are under my command this time. We have engineers with pockets full of mines. Enemies are rushing us already. Enemy tanks arrived after infantry recon. AT mines do their job well. AT mines and AT guns are good combination. At this point there is not that much of tactics, pure reflexes, quick and accurate fire. One of my soldiers is trapped on this hill. Will try to move him somewhere safer. Crew of knocket out Panther found cover between tubes. Right flank is locked down tight. AT grenade right into this halftrack. Another Panther is destroyed. Next wave of attack. My soldier is moving from the hill to Puma AFV. Secured left flank road. Only infantry remains to deal with, at least if enemy will not send yet more armor. Another armored assault. This time i have reinforcements... Tanks arrived to help me to deal with those assaults. IS-2, T-34-85s, KV-85 are now under my command. Spoiler Central part of my defenses is pretty much secured. Working on left flank. Panther got it's tracks taken out. After losing tracks, Panther was turned to the right, so UFP was facing my T-34. But i have a high ground this time! T-34-85 on right flank was even more unlucky - it managed to find a Tiger. KV-85 payed back for knocket out T-34. T-34 on left flank is clearing swamp from enemy cannon fodder. Central area is still not clear from enemy armor, KV-85 dispatched to finish things here. Enemies are retreating.. it is finally done. Over 500 enemy soldiers and 57 AFVs destoyed vs 48 and 14 on our side. Jesus, that was long and hard operation. N-L-M
LoooSeR
Berlin mission, part 1. We are tasked with taking railroad station and securing a bridge near it. Main forces are trying to push through railroads, but they are blocked and heavily fortified. Spoiler This is a death funnel My troops - 6 soldiers (1 sniper, 1 MG gunner) We just started and Germans already trying to sneak around our forces. Suppressed and grenaded. There is path on the left flank, but it is blocked by damaged train. I decided to soften up central section of enemy defenses with this 76 mm gun. Traincar is in the way, it blocks my LOS on that 75 mm AT gun. Good thing is that in this game you can destroy objects. Near miss. Meanwhile a new group of nazi troops tried to sneak to us. Left explosives near a door of that house. Looks like enemies were sneaking to us through this small shack-looking thing. Maybe a tunnel? Last of those sneaky rats is finished by DP stock wack to the head. Let's get back and use this tunnel entrance. Enemies are not expecting us to pop up behind them. Spoiler We are behind enemy lines, surrounded by German troops. We need to break contact and find better place to fight from, as this is rather bad place, enemies are firing from 2 sides. Oh, yeah, that should work. Fight in central area continues. This is like 3rd defensive line of German soldiers on right flank. Stug and Pak 38 covering a right flank road near railroad station. Clearing some patrols where we can. I decided to try to push left flank, as right side looks a bit too saturated with enemy forces, including armor. AT grenade was used to clear a path. T-34-85s are pushing railroads But they were taken out by 2nd line of defenses. Left flank looks more managable because of separation between railroad station area and river bank. Spoiler I decided to micro this push and use only 1 soldier, as all others were already on right flank. Will try to clear this railroad bridge from enemies on top, to secure middle approach. MG gunners are finished. AT gun is cleared. Damaged Ostwind is destroyed, to be sure. And enemy sniper is outsniped. Now we can go back to sneaking through left side. I will try to clear lower area next to Tiger and throw AT grenade over a wall. Spoiler Firing sniper rifle attracts too much attention sometimes. Continue to slowly progress through this pathway by wiping the dust with a belly. Time to disappear in a fog of war. After waiting a bit i'm back. Sniper rifle sometimes feels like a legal cheatcode. Path is almost clear. On the right side my troops managed to catch an opportunity to frag whole patrol. After i cleared damaged railroad bridge over central section, main forces managed to push further and found 2nd defensive line with more serious armor and guns compared to first line. LoooSeR
Part 2 We are going to sabotage this defense line. Spoiler On the right flank we lost a soldier to Ostwing that rushed to our position. It was dealt with. Pushing right flank. On the left flank, hand grenades are very useful Enemy rushed closer and now they have a high ground Helmet saved a life of my sniper. On right flank we are clearing area from enemies in hardened positions. Spoiler Good thing i have AT rocket launcher. Infantry is counter-attacking us. Next house full of nazis. Slowly chewing through enemies on left flank. Next frag connected. Enemies on the right received help in form of a tank. Panzer 4 got rocket into side plates and now is resting. Spoiler Enemies are very well protected in railroad station. That is going to be hard to crack. But that thing is going to help us a lot. Hehe, boi. Spoiler We are getting to rear part of enemy defenses. Main forces are pushing hard central part, armored attack is spearheaded by IS-2. Right side of railroad station, we are getting closer. Almost done with bridge defenses. And almost done with right flank as well. Central part is captured. Main forces are storming railroad station, all frontal defense line were smashed through. Spoiler Right flank is clear. Nazis are now going to blow up bridge as they know that railroad station is lost. We must stop them from destroying this bridge. Managed to kill enemies that were planning to blow up river crossing. Finishing last bad guys on our side of the river. Almost done with enemies iside of station. Germans are goint to conduct counter-attack from somewhere, i suspect they will push from the bridge or right flank. Moving Pak 40 to a place to good overwatch position. Spoiler While waiting for counter-attack, i cleared area from strugglers. German armor is moving from right flank. Our tanks are going to face them head on and my gun is in good place to deliver sideshots. Finished! 280 enemies killed, 23 AFV destroyed. We lost 106 and 18. LoooSeR
Soviet campaign continues, now we play for regular army soldiers instead of scout/recon unit in previous operations. Our troops are moving into Polish town where an uprising started. We were tasked to find rebels leader - general Grabowski. Spoiler We are part of bigger assault force moving through city streets. Germans are spread around and in solid cove, frag grenades and sniper fire is going to be crucial to push through. Head on counter-attack didn't worked so well. But enemies have 2 lines of defenses on that street. 2nd line Sniper was moved to position to take out MG nests. T-34-85 is suppoting us. Managed to flank armored car using truck wreck and throw molotov right into open top turret. Sniper is moving to new place, so he can find good LOS on enemies on right side of the street. AT gun tries to suppress my sniper. ... and in the process it broke a tree, which now i use to sneak closer to AT gun. General is not far, but we need to move through more city blocks to get here. Spoiler This place doesn't look pacable. Main troops are now pushing through courtyards with buildings packed with enemy infantry. While MG gunners and soldiers armed with SMG are suppressing enemies, my sniper is taking out nazi snipers and marksmans. Armored car tried to help to German troops, but it drove into really bad envroment for armor and got instantly hit with AT grenade. Rebels are fighting with Germans, we still didn't reached general Grabowski. Spoiler Preparing my troops equipment for more enemy armor encounters. Encounters like that one. Using Jp38t wreck we managed to take out Stug by side hit. Using troops to seal this bottleneck entrance. And we made a contact. Germans deployed their big cat to push through rebels barricades. First Faustpatron bounced of the very angled armor plate section. Used damaged Stug to conceal troops movement i managed to place my team in place with pretty good angle to enemy tank, although way too close (no other good place to fire from thanks to short range of Faustpatrons). KT is out of action. Support have arrived to help us to break Germans forward position. Spoiler IS-2 is pushing forward IS-2 pushed a too hard, was hit into the side plate. We are pushing to this group of buildings together with rebels. Rebels are firing RPGs at the building while we are getting closer and throw hand grenades at nazi troops. Only few enemies left at this point. Enemies lost 99 soldiers and 5 AFVs, we lost 14 and 0.
Scolopax
I haven't kept up as of late on your postings here and so have been going back through them, but after you play through the Allied and German campaigns, do you have any other games on your radar that you'd like to possibly play through/review, if you are interested in doing that still? LoooSeR
Next operation - a German spy managed to steal documents from Soviets and tried to fly to German HQ, but his plane was shot down over frontline. Enemy was lucky enough to hit a ground on German side, but this place is close to frontline. We were tasked with finding this spy and taking his documents before he will get to German HQ. Other side of river is full of infantry and MG nests. Spoiler My team. 2 MG gunners, sniper, 2 soldiers with SMGs. Plane that spy used and was shot down. We need to get to it and check if this guy is dead and have papers with him. Enemies have mortars in this thread. Central part of this area is occupied by mortars position, plane is to the south from them. Starting to work on bridge crossing, will try to secure it to have our rear secure when i move closer to shot down plane. Spoiler They guessed sniper position this time pretty close. My sniper is backed up with MG gunners, so infantry attacks are not a problem. Enemy soldier is retreating from bridge area. Last enemy on the bridge is finished. Tried to move to other bank of the river, but was spotted and mortars opened up on us. Near crashed plane. Because of mortars i'm trying to find a new way into enemy territory, but we need to be sneaky enough to not get hit by a mortar shell while being stationary. Spoiler Trying to not pop up in their LOS, so handgrenade over a barn is a good idea in this case. After a throw sniper was moved away into grass. Enemy is trying to guess where my soldier is. Sniper rifle is very good against single bad guys in the open. Behind buildings there are 2 armored cars, will check them. Rest of troops are moving to those buildings on N-W, where sniper is. We were not getting mortar fire here previously, so i think place is safe-ish now. Damn, those things are almost dry on fuel. At least plenty of gear and ammunition can be found around this place. Will need those for mortars position assault, those things are going to be a serious problem when we will move to a plane. Enemies are moving to our buildings. Will try to get them before they will spot us. Spoiler Enemies were alerted by gunfire, but mortars didn't shot at us. I'm trying to guess where to breach this industrial compound. I want to capture mortars, but i need to make a breaching point somewhere close enough to avoid getting hit by a mortar shell while attacking. Decided to blow up a wall next to MG nest and 1st mortar team, but my sniper attracted fire from enemies with a noise he was making. Will place explosives and run away. Nearest to the wall mortar is still active, although i guess place of where explosives are going to make a breach abut not destroy mortar tube very well. Germans are now pushing hard to try to catch us. Sniper is going to cut their numbers while other troopers are moving to concealed places, to avoid being spotted. Those baddies are way to close, managed to take them out very quickly with SMG fire on auto. Most of enemies were finished Sniper was very luck that mortar landed in rocky place. Moving around to find a good angle on mortar crew member. A lot of dead enemies here, haha. Found a pretty good spot to snipe 2nd number of mortar crew. Creating a new breach in order to take out 2nd mortar and MG nest near it. 1st breach isn't good enough for that - it is too far to throw a frag and place is open, MG nest will supress us and mortar will deal a lot of damage. So another place to get closer to them is needed. Spoiler 1st mortar tube and MG nest. I'm worried that some of those things may come to us before we manage to capture that factory building. Moving in. And enemies are also received reinforcements. Perfect frag. Corner of this area is still occupied, smokestack have a spotter on top, and 2 MG nests are still guarding entrance. On southern side friendly forces started attack after 2nd mortar was taken out. Rest of my team is moved closer to breach and capture this position. -1 MG nest at the entrance. Another perfect grenade, took out motorbike and most of infantry around it. enemy patrol is rushing from our rear. Managed to take them out just in time. Starting to capture enemy equipment, but my sniper was hit in helmet by enemy sniper fire. Here you are, bastard. Friendly forces captured area near shot down plane and we secured 2 mortar tubes and MGs. Spoiler Started to use mortars to clear area from enemy forces remains. Not much of mortar rounds are avaliable for us to play with. Perfect hit against moving target. Now it will not go anywhere, for sure. And very good hit against bunched up enemies. Germans are trying to assault our position and take it back, mortars are very usefull here. Germans are moving in heavier support to deal with our forces. Spoiler Trying to wear down enemy forces before they will arrive. Halftrack was pushing hard to us, managed to land a round right inside of it's troop compartment. Open top APCs suck! Enemies are taking positions in areas we cleared, this will be a problem if left without attention. Almost all friendly soldiers are MG carrying Rambos, lol. Moved my sniper to deal with those shameless guys trying to capture places we just cleared from them. Now only that AC carrier thing is left to deal with. Cleared this compound so i can have solid cover and place to hide if things are going to play as well as i hope. Spoiler Very good grenade throw. Well... this situation went to shit in seconds. Time to run. Not only a lot of armor arrived, but a lot of infantry as well, and they just ran next to my sniper is bushes. I prepared AT grenade in order to immobilise one of those panzers and sprint to cover ASAP. Path for escape is open and my sniper is out of this shit. Germans are trying to chase him. But i prepared another ambush waiting for a tank to clear a corner of the building. Next one, quick! Now run! Enemies are chasing sniper and managed to wound him several times, but my other soldiers are going to arrive soon to save him. Bunch of tanks are now avaliable for our grabby hands. Spoiler Shame, they are all damaged too much to be field repaired. Enemies arrived to a bridge from which we started our operation. Main line of enemy forces is not active for now, but this is uncertain situation. I decided to clear area behind us to secure our rears. hand grenades, sniper fire and SMG when they are close enough - this should work against enemies without soldi cover anywhere close to them. And we are done. Friendly forces controlled area and searched plane - no spy or documents, spy managed to get out of it before we arrived. But he can't be that far, we managed to get here pretty quick. One of possible location is on left flank of main line of Germans forces. I moved troops here quickly to start working on objective. Trying to take out enemies while moving on left side of those houses. This is not what i expected to see as a "sniper duel" Germans started another assault. My sniper continues to fight with enemies in that bushy field. I keeping my eye on houses nearby in order to spot if spy will try to escape. Germans assault group is pushing really hard, with all armor they have in that area. Spoiler We are not going to do much against this kind of assault, as we can't really ambush enemies in that area. Ordered to move MGs with us, my team is carrying them out of this positions. Tubes are empty, we don't have reason to hold our ground here. Sniper managed to get close with a building where enemy spy and commander are expected to be. My SMG soldiers are closing in from right side of this building, and to make sure enemies can't escape we damaged that armored car. Somebody here is trying to snipe my troopers. Another tree wookie, barely visible. Car detonation took that tree down, together with nazi sniper, heh. Found stolen papers and maps on this commander, who was killed in CQB. Our task is done, we are moving back to our extraction. Germans are moving reinforcements in, but looks like we will manage to avoid them. We managed to secure stolen documents and maps, during operation enemy lost 254 soldiers and 11 AFVs, while our troops (friendly forces only) lost 33 and 3 accordingly. LoooSeR
Next operation - we are assaulting a German fortress as a part of big force. My team - 5 soldiers (MG gunners, sniper, soldier with SMG). Spoiler Spoiler We started an attack, fighting troops outside of the fortress. We are supported by ISU-152, will push together with it. ISU hit near that AT gun and now it is upside down, lol. German infantry is suppressed, one of them self-healing. My sniper found a LOS to last german trooper behind damaged wall. We can push a little bit further. German counter-attack in form of 2 Panthers is coming to us. Spoiler Bridge was destroyed by enemies in order to cut our advance. 2 ISUs are pushing forward. It had HE round loaded when Panther appeared in it's sights. Next ISU-152 shot took out Panther. 2nd Panther is smashed into pieces. Need to find new entry point. Germans are running away. ISUs are now making new entry point for infantry. Spoiler New entry is ready for us, time to get inside. Friendly forces are in, i will try to capture artillery pieces North from this area. My target. Will try to save guns and boxes around them, they could have shells inside of them. Enemy light armor arrived to cover forces here. Managed to sneak close enough for AT grenade throw. MG and sniper rifle fire cleared gun crews, now all 3 are ready to be used. Can't tow them, sadly, so i use cannon closest to enemy troops and put more shells into it to shell enemies. After some artillery preps we are now pushing forward through surviving enemy forces. Spoiler This position was outside of cannons reach. Germans troops in ruins. Airbattle is happening above us. Captured that thing. It is able to clear minefields with those big rollers and armed with MG in frontal plate of superstructure. Tried to use it to tow cannons, but it didn't work. Decided to use it instead as a battleram. Heh, lucky me - this Pz3 version can climb stairs pretty well. Nice depression on that MG. I left this vehicle as enemy infantry roller in with AT grenades. Now my soldiers are throwing frags at enemies above us. That 88 was second reason why i didn't continue to push with this vehicle. Frendly troops advanced through 88mm AA gun position and stuck in this narrow passage. Spoiler German trooper was hidding between boxes, managed to throw a frag at us while we were doing the same. 2nd MG gunner is unconscious, but will be on his foots soon. Sniper is helping friendly forces to secure passage. SPAAG decided to respond to firefight here. This can be a problem in such narrow place. ISUs moved to help to us. German infantry that supported Ostwind is also almost done. Last survivor is running away, while my sniper is reloading his empty rifle. Next position in this fortress "outside circle" that blocks our path to central section. We are very close to finish this assault. Spoiler Sniper fire and hand grenades did their thing. Soviet troops are now advancing to central part of this fortress, where main building with HQ is located. Enemy have 88 mm gun on other side of courtyard We took our crew of nearby 88 mm gun, which now i will use to take out second one. Sniper and other troops are suppressing main building. Enemies are surrendering. Enemy lost 191 soldiers and 8 AFVs, we lost 38 and 2.
