Quote Some critics have called the officers who stayed outside and waited for permission to enter “cowards,” but now Miramar police are punishing two members of their own elite unit who did rush toward danger to try to save students' lives. Miramar Police Detectives Jeffrey Gilbert and Carl Schlosser were suspended from the Miramar SWAT team eight days after the shooting in Parkland, according to the Miami Herald. Both remain on active duty with the department, but working in different capacities, the Sun-Sentinel reported. “Effective immediately you have been suspended from the SWAT Team until further notice,” Miramar SWAT team commander Captain Kevin Nosowicz wrote in a Feb. 22 memo obtained by the Miami Herald through a public records request. “Please make arrangements with the training department to turn in your SWAT-issued rifle.” The memo said Det. Gilbert and Det. Schlosser acted “without the knowledge or authorization from your chain of command” and created an “officer safety situation due to dispatch not knowing your location or activity” by heading to the massacre-in-progress independently. GEORGE, Utah — UPDATE: Police said a homemade explosive device was the item discovered in a backpack at Pine View High School Monday, that forced the evacuation of the school. Police said if the device had detonated, it would have caused significant injury or death. Police have a suspect in custody. A warrant served at the male juvenile's home and items were found consistent with the materials used to build the device. Police also said the suspect had been researching information and expressing interest in ISIS and promoting the organization. The juvenile was interviewed as a person of interest, police say. During the interview with investigators, the suspect admitted to taking the American flag down and replacing it with an ISIS flag at Hurricane High School. The suspect also admitted to spray painting "ISIS IS COMI" on the school that same morning, police say. On Monday afternoon, investigators served a search warrant at the suspect's home, which found several items that tied the suspect to the crime at Hurricane High School. According to police, the suspect was arrested and placed in juvenile detention. This investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are pending. Hurricane Police Department spoke regarding the investigation on Tuesday morning: Authorities said that while charges have not yet been solidified, charges for criminal mischief and graffiti are possibilities. A young woman came out of the office, shot in the left leg. He said he helped drag her into the restaurant before hearing more shots ring out. Jesse said he ran back toward the YouTube office and looked through the doorway and saw a woman lying on the ground. “She was dead, I’m sure of it,” he said. “Those 10 shots were rapid fire - it was no mercy. There were four more shots after that. I wish I had had a gun but I didn’t. I had to be smart and get out of there.
