My favorite part about that article was that the revelation wasn't that the Aztecs had built a tower of skulls - that had been known literally for centuries - it's that it was built not only out of the skulls of conquered warriors, but women and children, too.

Society is less violent because... the Atom Bomb and the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction stopped the Cold War from going hot.

 

Society is less violent because... The age of consent has been raised and there are less child brides. Violence today is generally relegated to countries where the age of consent is young or non-existent.

 

Society is less violent because... There are fewer pirates.

Harvard undergrad decodes some Incan Khipu knots.
