Somehow this thing is even smaller. Those twin barrels are for a flamethrower of some sort, because the Italians were world-class optimists.

Bovington also has one, so it must have been a good enough idea to warrant making more than one of them

Yup, from the era before they went savage anything at all happened.

 

As to the Italians, I think you overestimate their threshold for 'good idea'.

There are plenty of pictures of the crusader mark 2 without the mini-turret.

 

I think they took it off in the desert (it was a waste of a machinegun) or it was removed as part of an official upgrade.
