Toxn
Might the bamboo have something to do with the way it's structured in bows not being reflected in your source? Bamboo gets used for back, belly and core. Plus it has ridiculously good crush strength (~ compressive strength), so I think it should fit pretty well into the formula. Really, I think this is a simple semantics thing: 'bamboo' refers to an entire tribe with over 1000 species, so your samples are variable to hell and back. It's like trying to pin down the mechanical properties of 'wood'.

Sturgeon
It's clear that Lars is the David Peters of archery.

Toxn
That's a pretty good analogy. Thanks for enlightening me.
Donward
It's not strictly archery but it is period related. https://northamptonbattlefieldssociety.wordpress.com/2015/02/12/oldest-cannonball-found-in-england/ I won't guarantee the historical provenance of whoever wrote the article. But it is need that they keep digging up cool new stuff over in Old Blighty.
Donward
Not "Medieval" but certainly the best place to put this. The most complete ancient crossbow unearthed with terracotta army http://www.ecns.cn/2015/03-20/158884.shtml I'm not going to hold much stock one way or the other but the article claims those Chinese crossbows had a range of 800 meters, which sounds rather fantastic. Toxn
Yeah, that's pretty much impossible outside of inswinger ballistas and modern compound bows/crossbows.
Donward
I'd think so. I'm unfamiliar with Chinese crossbows to be honest, short of all the stylized movies that came out after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which show crossbow men lying on their backs to fire.
