The interesting ship photos/art thread.

Here's a curious one that I hadn't heard of before, the CVA-58:

This ship design was conceived a few years after WWII as a dedicated bomber carrier.  Note that there is no island, which would allow aircraft with very wide wingspans to safely operate off the deck.  The double angled deck is an interesting touch too.

That's curious. While islands are a bit of a hassle in terms of landing planes, they're awfully handy for things like... I don't know... steering a ship, hanging radar and comm gear on, spotting incoming and outgoing planes coming in on the horizon, and boring command and control stuff like this.

Obviously mid-air refueling and perfecting that technology made this plan irrelevant.

It's a radical concept to be sure.  As I understand it, CVA-58 would have required an escort cruiser to handle all the radar, communications, et cetera.  But even that would not have been a totally satisfactory solution.  Islands are terribly useful for coordinating launch and recovery operations, and considering that carrier deck ops are horribly dangerous and cause horrible maiming and death when people aren't paying attention, getting rid of the island entirely seems like a bridge too far to me.

I know the Japanese had a few carriers lacking an island. And some of our - and the Royal Navy - had escort carriers sans islands as well.

I guess I'm not familiar enough with the decisions to do that other than sheer expediency and the fact that a lot of them were converted ships of a different class.

Our later "Jeep" carriers based on the Bogue Class had Islands though.
