That car was meant to achieve a world speed record on land. The development of the machine was carried out under the direction of Ferdinand Porsche and Joseph Mickley. Trials of this race car were planned for 1940, but by then the circumstances have changed dramatically and the project was cancelled.

The car was developed by specialists of the Gorky Automobile Plant since 1952, the year. the first prototypes were produced in 1956 (and this vehicle is shown in the photo).

Work on the car continued until 1962, after which the project has been coancelled, despite the need of the economy in this car - car plant in Gorky had already been fully loaded, and the organization of production at the Ulyanovsk plant prevented the high cost of production reorganization

Soviet GAZ-65 prototype/testbed of the wheel-tracked truck

IdOtfPI.jpg

The vehicle (which was just a serial GAZ-MM, equipped with a tracks mounts on top of the standard rear wheels drives) has been developed in the 1939-1940. In 1940 a first test batch of these machines arrived to the test facilities in the army and in the state civilian testing grounds. During the tests it was revealed that new layout did not gave significant increase in cross-country capabilites, while the fuel consumption increased significantly. As tests have shown that the use of this propulsion increases the load on components and assemblies of the car, which led to frequent breakdowns and failures.
At the end of the test operation of the propulsion device manufacturing was canclled, and has all trucks with this systems were converted back to normal GAZ-MM....

Interlagos is a variant of the French sports car Alpine A108, modified for the production in Brazil. Under agreements between companies, the production of this car was started on the plant of the American company Willys-Overland in Sao Paulo. Serial production of sports cars was from 1962 to 1966 and during that time 822 cars of this type were build.

In the USA, we did something similar (well, twice actually)... but we actually made it:

The Bricklin SV-1:

They were designed in 1971 and built in 72-76.

The name stands for "Safety Vehicle 1" and it had a roll cage, safety bumpers, etc.

The cars had 351Ws in them so they could have been cool, but they are smog era cars.

The concept of the safety car was not really new though. Preston Tucker (read about this guy! They even made a movie about him.) wanted his cars to be safe as hell and designed a pretty bitchin car:

He wanted safety to be central to the design, and installed seat belts (which was weird at the time), an additional headlight that lit up when the wheel was turned more than a few degrees, and it had safety glass and a windshield that would pop out if compromised.

A few years ago at the Barrett Jackson I saw that car above roll across the auction block. Beautiful vehicle:
