The Merkava, Israel's Chieftain?
Walter_Sobchak replied to Life_In_Black's topic in Mechanized Warfare
I like that picture of the engine bay for the Namer. I was wondering how they fit an AVDS-1790 into that vehicle while maintaining the Merkava four front armor shape (no bulge for the engine like on Merkava 1 - 3). -
Kinda like atheists that form their own clubs and spend most of their time complaining about a god they don't believe in. Full disclosure, I am an atheist, as is my wife. We typically avoid atheists that spend their time complaining about religion.

The Soviet Tank Thread: Transversely Mounted 1000hp Engines
Walter_Sobchak replied to T___A's topic in Mechanized Warfare
The net horsepower figure is actually a more useful figure, but everyone likes to use gross horsepower since it makes for a bigger number, better for marketing purposes. The really useful stat that is always really hard to find is "Power at the sprocket."- 5,208 replies

The Soviet Tank Thread: Transversely Mounted 1000hp Engines
Walter_Sobchak replied to T___A's topic in Mechanized Warfare
The HP rating you list for the AVSI-1790-6 is the net HP, not gross HP (Gross HP is usually what gets listed as "horsepower" in most books.)- 5,208 replies

Were Shermans Called "Ronsons"? No, They Weren't
Walter_Sobchak replied to Sturgeon's topic in Mechanized Warfare
I recently got a PDF copy of John Buckley's "British Armour in the Normandy Campaign 1944." It's a really good read and helps to explain the reason the Sherman got a bit of a bad reputation in British service. And since a good many of the books on the Sherman and Allied armor was written by the British, it's not hard to understand why the Sherman got so much bad press. In a nut shell, Montgomery was loathe to sacrifice too many infantrymen in the Normandy campaign due to British manpower shortages, so he was willing to use (or misuse) his armor units in breakthrough operations that resulted in high tank losses. -
Yep. I think you can find those on Pintrest labeled as "ammo cozies."

Were Shermans Called "Ronsons"? No, They Weren't
Walter_Sobchak replied to Sturgeon's topic in Mechanized Warfare
The funny thing is that I would not be surprised if "Ronson" really was one of the many nicknames that troops used at one point or another for the Sherman. All I've been trying to argue is that we have no proof that "lights first every time" was an actual slogan. And since every mention in a book of the Sherman tank includes the explanation that they called it ronson because of "the popular lights first everytime slogan", it makes me think that this must come from a single source somewhere and has gotten repeated again and again. Unfortunately, Cherps is not capable of having anything approaching an intelligent conversation on the matter. -
I just realized this is the "post pictures of your guns thread" and not a "post pictures of interesting guns" thread. I was not trying to imply that I own a 1920's ear Thompson with a pig sticker on the end of it.

The average person has a hard time getting their head around how important indirect fire weapons are. I remember when I was a kid, I always had trouble figuring out what exactly to do with my Mortar soldier G.I Joe guy.

India's ARJUN tanks mostly broken

I think they have had problems with everything. -

India's ARJUN tanks mostly broken
Walter_Sobchak replied to Belesarius's topic in Mechanized Warfare
Indeed. Their original idea for the Arjun (way back in the late 70's) was to make their own licensed version of the AVCR-1360. This was essentially the engine developed for the MBT-70 and the General Motors XM1 prototype that lost to the Chrysler entry. They couldn't get more than 500 HP out of the ones they built, even though it was supposed to be a 1500 HP engine. So they gave up and went with a foreign produced engine. -

Walter_Sobchak replied to Belesarius's topic in Mechanized Warfare
Actually, it's more like 75% are out of commission. Here is the thing I don't understand about the Arjun. You would think that they would have selected the MTU 883 engine, just like Israel did for the Merk 4 or like Korea with the K2. Or at the very least, the MB-873 from the Leo 2. But no, they use the MTU MB-838 Ka 501 diesel. This is essentially a more powerful version of the engine in the Leopard 1. So basically, they got MTU's oldest engine design, gussied up to pull a bunch of extra power out of it. Now, it might be a good engine, I don't really know for sure. But still, you would think they would have gone with something a little newer. -
We really need to re-dub that video to make Luigi start spouting off about Khirosheev and Deathtraps.

How come we don't train all our soldiers to use John Rambo's ultra-effective tactic of "standing behind a tree with a knife." It's amazing how often that works for him.

I figured we should have a thread for that most venerable of firearms, the M2 .50 cal machine gun. As a reminder of just how old this weapons system is, here is an article about it from 1921. This gun is older than many of our grand parents. Try to think of any piece of machinery dating back to 1921 that is still in use today, either military or civilian. It's pretty amazing to consider what John Browning accomplished with this design.

Well, the Russians have finally surpassed the West in making a tank that is absolutely hideous. I thought the LeClerc and the K2 were ugly, but this thing.... But then, I think just about every tank introduced since 1979 is ugly.
