  1. I also get it giving museum tours. The armored tour is probably (obviously) the worst, but I'd say the MG42 on display indoors gets the widest range of myths. I think most of the time it's people just extrapolating on one feature to make up something that sounds plausible-yet-amazing to try to impress me or other visitors. My favorite one is a claim that if Germans didn't have ammo around for the '42, they'd fire blanks because Allies were scared of the noise, which was just so mind-bogglingly dumb he had to have made it up on the spot.
  2. Dad officially let me have the Argentine Mauser today. He let me have it around at my place for a while because he never really shot it, and felt I'd take better care of it, but it was official today. I just love looking at this thing:
  3. I remember my history teacher getting defensive when we informed him that "chink" is considered offensive. No joke, his response was "No, it's not, it's just short for Chinaman." Stay classy, Appalachia.
  4. Yeah, but you know the types I'm talking about. OC is common out here in PA, as well, since I feel like half my neighbors carry due to them being farmers patrolling their lands or three of them being Conservation Officers. I'm okay with that, since any of those guys have the presence of mind to know that it's unnerving to many people. Unfortunately, we've just gotten a rash of doobers carrying AR-15s while walking into Dairy Queen or down highways purely for attention. One of them blew off a few of his toes in a Wal-Mart parking lot last year.
  5. Weird. The only gun left on my "Gotta own now" list is the Garand. If I don't see one in Harrisburg this year, then I'll probably just finally get my CMP stuff and buy one of theirs. After that, I'm looking for anything, and MAS 49s are up there on my "interested" list. Oh, and thanks for the Murphy's and linseed tip. It's really helped some of the worse spots on my Enfield stock, mostly near the butt plate.
  6. For what it's worth, I'm really jealous of your MAS. That thing must get attention at the range.
  7. How are you supposed to reload those? Or is the idea that you're taking what would normally be a full ammo load on one belt anyway?
  8. I'm glad I switched over here. The HAV was becoming way too circle-jerky. Then, when there weren't enough non-HAVers to yell at, people would just get mad at each other. Also, I love Tied, but I am very tired of his schtick. Anyhoo, I'm staring at the stock on my new Enfield, and I'm sort of getting that buyer's remorse after a purchase. The feeling will fade in time, as I know that good stocks on Enfields are rare, wood and metal will fade, and that I'll learn to love the deficincies, but does anyone have a good regimen for treating and preserving some nasty wood? edit: APPARENTLY CALLING A MOSIN NAGANT A "NAGANT" IS THE WORST THING I CAN DO ONLINE. Sorry, mom and dad I know you tried.
  9. I have no reservations in taking these peoples' guns away for life after stuff like that. A wounded animal can get freaked out and maul a person out of fear. A gun is a responsibility as much as a "right." If you're not up for the responsibility, then you're not up for a right granted to you by the state. I'm tired of doofuses making us all look bad. These doobers used to wait by roads in the mountains and shoot at dogs. It was treated with fines and generally ignored until some Gomer shot a trained rescue dog a few days after 9/11. The dog was out of training, and had just gotten called to serve with first responders at the tower or Pentagon, so the guy really got run through the wringer. It really didn't help that he "mistook" it for a deer, and shot it in the head as the owner was walking it down a paved road. edit: Because that first paragraph may seem like I'm trying to steer us into the debate we all hate by now, I'm gonna just end this on a higher note. I just want someone to give a 20th century version of this speech to hunters in our areas before they're allowed to go out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90TQGasjs0Q
  10. I got a different bit of it. Gunfire near the house meant drunken tourist hunters were too close. We had a few bullets crack windows while we weren't home, and the local C.O.s and police were always on ready to dial. Dad had to testify in court on one case.
  11. "A jury consists of twelve people who were too stupid to get out of jury duty." Treat every jury like they're the comment section of a website.
  12. So, long story short, my grandfather and aunt were huge hoarders. Grandpa died, so we cleaned up, got on my aunt to take care of her stuff, got all of the useless shit out of our lives, and we're left with some cool thing like an M1907 sling and an M1A1 tank periscope. Unfortunately, I don't know much about some of it, so I'm asking around here. The first two are an Iver Johnson (top) and an F&W (bottom). I literally know nothing about them. Nobody ever saw grandpa buy a handgun, so we assume he nabbed some grunts' contraband when he was a Sargeant in the army: The second one's vexed us for a while. It resembles a Velo pocket revolver, but has some visual differences and intricate detailing on it, and has what looks like "Browning" written on the top. I don't think Browning ever made these, so I just assume it was someone's personalized engraving. The action won't cycle, either by trigger or attempts to move the cylinder. Also, I am really sorry you have to see my goony, unkempt fingernails. I cut them after seeing them in the picture, I promise.
  13. Someone on TFR posted it. Either someone cut down one of the wooden furniture G3s, or were at least inspired by them.
  14. I love the Remy and Winchester, guys. I posted these in the small arms thread because I got the Enfield yesterday. I got the Argentine Mauser back from my dad today, so I got the whole gang together: The Mauser's been in the family forever. It's been well taken care of, and the metal has only recently developed a petina. They're great rifles. I don't consider myself a wonderful shot, but I can't miss whatever I aim at with it. I also have never heard a more satisfying noise than when I work the action on this bolt. The M44 was a gift from my dad, and it was the first rifle that was "mine." This is back when $80 got you the rifle, a sling, a carrying case, and surplus ammo pouches and cleaning equipment. It's a fine rifle, but not for pinpoint aiming. It's mostly useful for freaking people out on the range with the muzzle flash and earth-shattering kaboom. The 91/30 is a recent addition. $200 for a barrel that had never been used, and restored wood. Kicking myself for not buying a $90 one when I could, but I'm glad to have him. edit: Now that I look at it, the Mauser looks like it's in worse shape in the picture than it actually is, and the Enfield looks better than it actually is. Odd.
  15. Semi-related, but what does everyone think of Ballistol? I clean my rifles after every time I fire them, and it's just so much of a chore. I'm always looking for a safe, yet more convenient way of cleaning rifles after firing corrosive ammo, and if this stuff lives up to its promises, it sounds great. I just don't think I trust the average Youtuber jagoff, though.
  16. Ah, sorry. I'll make a note. I've wanted an Enfield for so long, and I'm glad to finally have one in the family. It's going to get plenty of love and range time. vv I know. The action is fantastic. I love my Mosins, but I'm not a fan of the actions on the bolts. The Mauser is alright, but I've jammed my wrist a few times when getting a little over-excited.
  17. Thank you. I got the M44 for $80 a few years back (extra $20 for a case, strap, ammo pack, etc.). The 91/30 Is completely redone with an untouched barrel for $200 (I should have bought it when they were $90, but I was dumb). The Enfield is un-fired surplus for $550. I'm still kicking myself for not buying an M1 Carbine at the Harrisburg gun show for $350 about ten years ago. Living in Pennsylvania is a gun collector's dream. I just gotta get the Garand in there, and I'll be happy.
  18. I overpaid for it, but I definitely feel like I owe it to the guy. He's given me insane deals on guns and equipment, and he offered me dirt-cheap prices for .303 if I came back. My collection as it stands now (Minus my Argentine Mauser, which is at my parents' house):
  19. Has Russia put any effort into electric reactive armor at all? Or are they happy with their other systems?
  20. Should have been arrested for that stupid haircut. I hate open carry types. They're pretty much universally doing it for attention, and help increase the gap between anti-gun believers and responsible gun owners.
  21. Coincidentally had your G41 video playing when I read that. Fun stuff. Anyhow. I know I'm opening up the flood gates, but after building up my collection of old bolt-actions, I'm ready for a Garand. I just don't know where to start. CMP looks like a decent place. They're the only Garands I see under $1000, and people say they're good quality. Is anyone else familiar with the CMP rifles, and if they're worth it?
  22. Key & Peele have their moments: I prefer character comedy over sketch comedy, myself.
