I assume you are the resident expert on that topic?

Alright, this one is for LC:

It looks like here has "show all" set as default. Of course, no way of knowing for sure until february

On TN, at the top of each board there's a bar with buttons for "recently updated", "start date", etc - different ways to filter the threads. right hand side of the row of buttons is called "custom", you can set the desired cutoff date in that

For having good graphics I am dismayed at how poorly designed the game play is. The worst is the lack of ground friction (whatever the technicall term is) of tank driving. It feels like I'm driving a skateboard in an 8-bit Nintendo game.

T___A reacted to EnsignExpendable in WoT v WT effort-thread
The biggest killer of WT for me is the amount of time I need to dedicate to a battle. In WoT, I can crank out a fight every 5-7 minutes, even if I die and have to use another tank. In WT, it takes what, half an hour to find and play a Realistic battle? Pass.

T___A got a reaction from Tied in The Soviet Tank Thread: Transversely Mounted 1000hp Engines
I will write an article about it tomorrow but anyway here is drawing of the IS-2U.

Apparently the original armor scheme suggested would've required replacing the torsion bars with something smaller.

T___A got a reaction from That_Baka in The Small Arms Thread, Part 8: 2018; ICSR to be replaced by US Army with interim 15mm Revolver Cannon.
These troops are supposedly using AS-44s but I'm not sure if they are.

This shall be the general thread for all things soviet tanks. I shall start by posting an article I just wrote for my blog. I would recommend Archive Awarness which is an excellent blog about Soviet tanks and their experiences with other nation's tanks.

Now, we are all in agreement that the best tank the Germans built was the StuG III.

But did you know that the Germans had other vehicles? It's true! You should talk about them here.

T___A reacted to LostCosmonaut in UR-700: Father of Proton
During the 1960s, there were many competiting designs for the rocket that would be used in the Soviet Lunar Program. Ultimately, the N1 was chosen, and proceeded to detonate and/or deflagrate vigorously on all four of its launches. One of the hypothetical competitors to the N1 was the UR-700.

A development of Chelomei's 'Universal Rocket System' (which also included the UR-100, UR-200, and UR-500 (Proton)), there were several important differences between the UR-700 and N1. For one, while the N1 was to have used kerosene/LOX fuels, the UR-700 would have used hypergolics, namely UDMH/N2O4. This fuel combination has reduced specific impulse compared to cryogenic fuels. However, considering that Chelomei's other rockets in the series were developed as ICBMs fueled by hypergolics, it is easy to see why they would have been chosen for the UR-700. Additionally, while the N1 had no less than 30 first stage engines, the UR-700 first stage was to have been powered by only nine RD-270 engines. To be fair, the RD-270 was much larger than the NK-15 used on the N1.

The UR-700 was planned to put 130-170 tons into LEO, which the Soviets judged to be the required amount for a direct ascent lunar mission. The choice of direct ascent, as compared to the lunar orbit rendezvous approach used by the Apollo missions (as well as Korolev's N1 based mission profile) results in a less efficient architecture. Most likely, Chelomei chose a direct ascent approach due to fears over the Soviet's lack of docking. Since the Americans had worked these issues out during the Gemini program, by the late 1960s, they were confident in the decision to use LOR.

Given the numerous issues in the Soviet Lunar Program, it is unlikely that choosing the UR-700 over the N1 would have got a cosmonaut on the moon before Armstrong. However, it's an interesting what-if? Could the UR-700 have been modified for use in an LOR mission? I believe it could have, given the UR-series' modular nature. Of course, it is likely that the UR-700 would have run into many other unforeseen issues, which could have resulted in failure. I'm curious to see y'all's opinions on it.

T___A reacted to Khand-e in Vehicles of the PLA: Now with refreshing new topic title!
So, basic introduction, to start off, we'll go with the latest backbone of the PLA Ground forces' Armored divisions, the ZTZ-96 G/A

    Basic specs.

    Crew: 3

Weight: 42-45 tonnes depending on equipment and addon armor/era.

Power plant: 1,000 hp liquid cooled Diesel engine

    Speed: 65 km/h on roads 45 km/h off road

    Range: 400km without external tanks

Armament: 125mm L/48 main gun with autoloader similar to the Soviet 2A46 (8 rounds per minute rof), ATGM capable, based on Russian Refleks-M missile, also has HEI-FRAG, HEAT, and APFSDS ammunition choices, W-85 12.7mm cupola machine gun (not pictured in this photo), 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.

Wow, such sharp looking, very armor.

Capability wise, this tank was recently pitted against some modern T-72B variants in a Russian tank Biathalon, and while it was deemed better in Armor, Armament, and Electronics, it lost out in mobility due to the underpowered engine, this killed all 730 and 780 hp engines in other ZTZ-96 G/As for the 1,000 hp engine.

One interesting note: the boxes on the side actually contain equipment that interferes with the targetting systems of SACLOS missiles, aswell as laser designators, rangefinders and guidance systems, these can be seen when the tank is viewed from above.

    -----

The heavier, far stronger pride of the ground forces.

    ZTZ-99 (A2 variant pictured.)

    Crew: 3

Weight: 54-60 tonnes depending on variant

Powerplant: 1,500 hp turbo charged liquid cooled diesel engine

    Speed: 80 km/h on roads, 60 km/h off road

    Range: 600km without external tanks.

Armament: ZPT98 125mm L/52 autloaded gun with 8 rounds/minute rate of fire (some sources quote later variants at 11 rounds per minute), higher pressure tolerances, redesigned autoloader and other improvements, this allows it to fire improved ammunition such as far more deadly APFSDS then other 125mm autoloaded gun platforms in the PLA's inventory, it can still fire all other types of rounds aswell, W-85 12.7mm cupola machine gun, 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.

Armor: While the exact thickness and composition isn't known, It's known from cutaway photos and some are pubically released information to have a hard spall liner as many other tanks these days, the actual armor composition itself are plates of high strength/toughness maraging steel sandwiching materials such as high hardness Aluminum oxides, aswell as layers of Graphene and unknown materials from there (likely something very dense), the boxes on the side of the turret and on the pike nose on the front are likely addon ceramic armor as opposed to ERA as originally believed and may be hollow to act as spaced armed, aside from the physical armor package, the tank also features ERA, NERA, and active defense systems that jam or alter the trajectory of various types of guided projectiles.

So, this is the actual "elite" tank of the PLA to supplement the cheaper 96's, Originally it started out with a modest $2,500.000 production cost, however, as time grew on and they kept advancing it to the lastest standards of a top tier MBT, that sort of spiraled out of control a bit, coupled with the fact that the PLA ground forces don't get the same funding as the PLAAF and the PLAN, and the result was that, while the 99A2 has turned out to be a beast in it's own right, it simply isn't feasible price wise to give every tank crew a Type 99A2, however this is probably one of the most underrated 3rd generation MBTs as it's rarely talked about and theres a fuck ton of misinformation about it (mainly that it's a clone of the T-72/T-80 which is completely wrong) and well, it's goddamn pretty, and that counts for alot.

T___A got a reaction from That_Baka in The Swedish AFV Thread: Not Just Strv 103s
It's interesting to note what the Soviets and what the Swedish thought were viable designs. The Soviets desgined a tank similar to the Strv 103 but it was rejected due to their concerns on aiming the gun of a turretless tank.

T___A reacted to LostCosmonaut in The Swedish AFV Thread: Not Just Strv 103s
I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with Swedish armored fighting vehicles (although my disease is not quite as bad as T___A's attraction to communist frying pans and the like). By far the most well known Swedish AFV is the Strv 103, one of the more unusual MBT designs from the Cold War.

However, there are also numerous other Swedish armored vehicle designs that I find interesting. Such as the Kranvagn, and the Strv 74.

If you are interested in learning more about Swedish AFVs, I would highly recommend consulting this excellent site. Be warned, most of the documents therein are in Swedish, so at least have google translate open in another tab.
