  1. Fremm DA Lorraine at sea trials off the coast of Britanny :
  2. Kinda putting it here by default, but a very interesting read nonetheless : An essay on French warfare from (late) WW2 to nowadays and how it may be impacted by the lessons being learned in Ukraine, all from a British PoV. https://wavellroom.com/2022/06/22/french-army-warfare/ The article start by doing an history of French doctrine and how it evolved through time. Nothing surprising here, manouver to keep the initiative, strike at ennemy weak points using concentrated effects then disperse to avoid retaliations. Mobility, firepower, good information acquisition and quick decision making being key for this kind of doctrine. The downsides being that logistics become quickly very complicated when every battle group is off doing what they think they need doing and a potential lack of resilience if the enemy doesn't lose steam despite the raids conducted by French forces. What I take from the article is that the author is saying that the war in Ukraine is currently showing an advantage to defensive doctrines (where conventionnal artillery is key) and that the French army, with it's lack of "mass", resilience (mainly in the amount of material and ammo available) and shortfall in some capabilities (low altitude air defence for example) will have to rethink it's logistics and size as well as to how conduct agressive actions against a dug-in ennemy. On the other hand the current French army has some strength that coul be leveraged in a conflict analogue to the one in Ukraine. Like already being adept at forces dispersion, having short decision loops (autonomy of low level officiers, infocentric and network based warfare) and the ability to quickly tailor ad-hoc battle groups suited for the current objectives.
  3. Proposed AMX-30 upgrade by EODH : Somewhat similar to the Leopard 1 C2 I guess :
  4. Yep you're right, miss-read that and didn't though about it. I was reading in French and writing in English so I mixed up the decimal separators (because the Anglo-Saxons had to be special again^^). The article say 30 000 g. Thank you.
  5. Ammunition concept for railguns by the ISL : Sabot 120 mm (scale 2/3 rd) with a projected range of ~200 km : Salvo ammuntion for CIWS railgun applications (3D printed model, scale 1 : 1): Since railguns don't do well regarding rate of fire, the idea is to launch five of those within a 1/10th of a second allowing fire them within one discharge cycle. With a low dispersion, those rounds could intercept an hypersonic missile at a range of 1 km (which doesn't leave much time for reaction). Last concept presented (no photo here) is a hollow aluminum round used to test the resistance to acceleration (30 000 g) of electronics. https://www.forcesoperations.com/eurosatory-de-nouveaux-concepts-de-munitions-pour-le-rail-gun-de-lisl/
  6. Otokar promo video for Eurosatory :
  7. Never heard of it being put in service officially but for all we know there has been a limited production run and the Leclerc can technically fire it (there was a small production run of DU OFL 120 F2). I'm sure most of what we have in stock is still the OFL 120 F1/DM43 (because it still does the job against pretty much any expected adversary) but I doubt we don't have some more advanced APFSDS in stock if needed (not in big numbers mind you but probably some). That or an order has been made and it will be the main APFDS for the Leclerc XLR. If knowing what and many vehicles are in service have always been pretty easy through annual report to the senate, knowing exactly what sub-version of a system or ammunition is in service and in which numbers have always been harder.
  8. Cockerill turrets are usually fugly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Whether this turret is worth replacing the 1A5 turret I don't know (optics probably, firepower wise probably nothing meaningful). It does remove the need for a loader so that's always a plus for small budget country. I would think that the country that still operate the Leopard 1 as an MBT and want to upgrade it, would like something more significant (probably a 120 mm along with a fix of the obsolescences).
  9. Sherpa combining the same Hornet 40 mm GL with a Helma-P laser system :
  10. Arquus Scarabée with an Hornet RCWS combining a 12,7 mm and an MMP ATGM : Hornet is developing a version with two missiles.
  11. ARX 30 (same that could be seen on the roof of the EMBT) coupled with an anti-UAV jamming rifle : In the same vein the now (almost) standard Hornet RCWS turret found on the Griffon mounting a 40 mm GL with an airburst charge : The turret replace the smoke launchers with a radar. With an effective range of only 400m the utility of such a system even against microdrones is, in my opinion, dubious though experimentations have already been conducted (video below). Finally a Serval VBMR-L with 2 mistrals mounted on the roof : If it could replace the last VLRA Mistral (where the operator is badly exposed) it would be great.
  12. Leopard 1 retrofitted with a 105 mm Cockerill turret :
  13. Ground based 40mm RapidFire mounted on the same chassis than the Caesar NG 6x6 : Will possibly be used to accompany artillery battery while local airspace monitoring could be provided by accompanying Ground Master 60 :
  14. Caesar NG render: A basic 6x6 Caesar with improved cabin protection and improved motorisation in order to compensate for the increased weight. Unlike the Caesar 8x8 it doesn't feature the improved loading mechanism, nor does it carry the amount of ammo the 8x8 can. All Caesar 6x6 in the French army will likely be retrofitted to the NG standard in the future.
  15. Leclerc XLR pictures : Pretty much what we saw on the mockup and nothing groundbreaking on the outside. The main upgrades are an RCWS on standard (finally), a bit of up-armouring and most importantly the Scorpion BMS on the inside.
  16. Especially with a force of over 1500 MBT. At the very least Poland will have very diverse suppliers which should help dampening the effects of political ties.
  17. Lithuania's defence minister will sign a letter of intention for the acquisition of an unspecified number of Caesar SPG. http://www.opex360.com/2022/06/13/la-lituanie-a-lintention-dequiper-un-bataillon-dartillerie-avec-des-caesar-acquis-aupres-de-nexter/ Lithuanian press also report a possible adhesion to the Caesar NG modernization program. According to the Lithuanian chief of staff, it would be for equipping the entirety of the general Motiejus Pečiulionis brigade (actually using 54 105 mm M101 transferred from Danemark in 2002). The chief of staff also hope for a deployment of French Caesar (within the frame of a NATO deployement) in Lithuania in order to start preparing Lithuanian soldiers to use the system. As a reminder Lithuania also operate 21 PzH 2000.
  18. Arquus, Thales and NTGS proposing a Sherpa Light carrying a 120 mm (or 81 mm) mortar : https://www.forcesoperations.com/eurosatory-2022-un-trio-franco-espagnol-pour-un-sherpa-shoot-and-scoot/ 30s to enter or leave battery 4 to 6 shells fired within 2 minutes with a range of 13 km Automatic gun laying and calculations Firing sequence under armor except for loading (only one person outside?) 40 120 mm shells onboard (more in the 81 mm version) Goal is obviously to minimize exposure time and risks of counter battery. Will probably be marketed to Romania. First demonstration expected around September.
  19. Nexter propose a new artillery shell LU 220 : https://www.forcesoperations.com/eurosatory-lobus-lu-220-de-nexter-arrowtech-un-coup-de-punch-pour-lartillerie-de-155-mm/ Almost the same than the LU 211 : Improved range by working on the aerodynamics (44 km compared to 40 km previously) More explosive mass (11 kg compared to 8,8 kg previously) Improved lethality (double effective area claimed) Nexter Arrowtech is now working on the LU 320 with a goal of a 1000 m/s muzzle velocity for a range of 50 km and course correction
  20. Well unlike the previous version, this EMBT could actually be a worthwhile interim solution (though it is already obese at 61,5t but I guess some systems may be optional). Remain to be seen if there is actually a market for it. It will be competing with the latest K2 and Leopard 2 variants without having the benefits of being already in production or in use and I doubt it would be any cheaper than them.
