gaucho1 reacted to Lord_James in Vacations and Traveling Thread: Where have you been?
So, to practice sending photos from my phone to the internet (in preparation for taking pictures of Artemis 2), I'd like to share some pictures of my most recent vacation to Mars. Yup, took one of Elon's rockets and blasted off! Utah is so damn beautiful.
I didn't want to derail looser's family photos thread, so I'll just make this new one.
Flying in
The first stop my family and I made on our trip was on the "wrong side" of Zion, or the less busy side. I loved the red rocks, and the sky was an incredible shade of blue; my phone camera doesn't quite capture that.
There's a whole lot of nothin' between towns and tourist stops, but the scenery is nice.
The next stop was Arches national park, which you need to make a reservation to get into. I took few pictures of the actual Arcs, because I cannot into be bothered.
Next came Dead Horse Point; it's called that because the cowboys use to drive the wild horses up onto the plateau to catch them.
We also visited Goblins state park, where part of the movie Galaxy Quest was filmed.
We went some other random places to. I don't remember which belongs to what, so I'll be lazy and put them all here
And our last stop was at Bryce national park, where I finally saw snow. I was ill prepared for such an event, however...
I would have posted this an hour or so ago, but I honestly got distracted by something on Imgur, which was a nice start to the day.

Part of my brain still refuses to accept that "solutionize" is an actual piece of metallurgical terminology and not something that George W. Bush came up with. He's not a problemifier, he's a solutionizer.

Interesting article about T-64 turrets by Andrey
https://warspot.ru/5447-probnye-shary-sovetskogo-tankostroeniya
Turret with with ultraforcelain inserts (cylinders) from the technical project of “Izdelie 432”, 1961. They returned to this idea in 1968, but the final version was corundum balls KVP-98, which were produced by a ceramic factory in Slavyansk (assembly of inserts with balls). The very development of the turret from the project to the adoption in 1973 took 12 years.

gaucho1 reacted to Belesarius in US/Iran flirting with quagmire thred.
I don't know that the US has the political willpower to deal with an extended conflict with Iran. I would also expect a Trump government to have significant difficulty in building an international coalition to fight with Iran. He's pissed off a lot of allies. And on a personal level, I wouldn't waste a single American/Canadian/British life for anything to do with the middle east. Let the shithole rot.

Strange to see this plane now, feels retro. Can't believe that when i was a kid this thing was cutting edge and mythical super plane.

The Swiss have reduced bolt bounce in their Sturmgewehr 57 by deforming the cartridge shoulder upon bolt impact. Patent.

India has claimed it killed ~350 militants in their strike while Pakistan claims that the strikes resulted in 0 casualties.
It is hard to decide if the Indian military is just as incompetent as they've always been or if the Pakistanis are just lying as usual.

His anecdote about the pressure sensor on the bustle ammunition compartment's sliding door was fascinating. I love those little-known details.
And lucky for him, too. Having your arm crushed by a quarter-ton slab of steel sounds like an extremely bad, career-ending day.

gaucho1 reacted to LoooSeR in Syrian conflict.
I have my own version, with blackjack and hookers - in reality, outside of theatrical perfomances of politicains this chemical attack or "chemical attack" doesn't matter as attack didn't killed\"killed" more than any other serious weapon system killed in Syria, it didn't changed anything from military POV, it didn't brought down human rights or dignity more than artillery did in Eastern Ghouta. Now we have this theater of hollowbodied bastards the real event doesn't matter for them either. It is simulacrum that exist outside of an actual event.
