  1. They are replacing tornados and not even all of them the EW is goin to be provided by further development for the eurofighter. If anything having experience with the F35 gives a better baseline to see what the FCAS has to be capable of.
So the french offer was to sell or lease modernized ATL2 that france didnt initially want to modernize so not exatly a good stopgap if it isnt available quickly and is as old or older than the airframes its supposed to replace. Even moreso given that the P3 wasnt modernized because it wouldnt be cost effective.
  3. Most seems to be ukrainian civilians videos sowing russian troop movements, some nato intel and some official ukrainian statements. So where the fighting is can be plotted reasonably accurate. The big black box is how many troops the ukrainians are actually loosing themselves.
  4. That progression only holds up with loads of specifications. If you allow heavy tanks in it they completely dominate it. KW1, Tiger, IS2 have not much worse hp/ton than contemporary mediums but completely outclass them in armour and firepower. And even if we look at the mediums their loosing runs are consistently when outnumbered operationally, under enemy air superiority and with generally worse trained crews and units. Well similar to aircraft having a better engine makes a better tank For the time they were designed they had good guns. But they got introdiced at the start of an arms race that send medium tanks from around 15 tons to 45 tons in 10 years. The only tank reaching your 20tons, 300hp, med velocity 75 is the pz4f2 and it was at that point at its practical weight limit (though circumstance forced it to keep growing) Only with hindsight on where the development would go could you do much better. There are some details that could be improved but the vast majority of design decisions that we would maake different today were made different as a result of a different technological level Well that commander is right though. The sherman is better suited for bocage country and the panther isnt exactly reliable.
  5. The RPG catchers are cage armour that can be attached to the sides not the extra armour plate on the side.
  6. Do you have any sources you can share? The reliability of the computers was the single biggest issue that keeps coming up but supposedly its gotten far better with the vjtf23 version though i didnt get to talk with any end user of that version yet. Spare parts are afaik just the german army not buying them in sufficient quantities and is the same for our leo2s for example The accuracy ive only ever hard during its prototype phase being an issue. Any actual end user ive talked to had nothing but praise for it as long as the computers keep working. And ive never heard of stalling issues. Even in Tank driver school where id expect this to come up even more from the drivers to the instructers ive never heard that mentioned even once.
  7. Im currently a tanker in the german army. Broadly speaking the tactics are similar. A tank attack looks basicaly the same in 1944 as it does in 2020 just slower and less deadly. A simple defense would also look similar but be fought with more mobility with frequent position changes. The biggest change is that today a tank has a more narrow focus. Anti infantry work is left to pzgrenns and their ifvs if possible and anti tank/ifv work is the main job of the tank. We carry a mojority of apfsds and some heat and no proper he round even though it exists already.
  8. " During rapid rate of fire it is not uncommon to be forced to break off firing when the recoil of the gun has reached its permissible limit (cease fire). A rate of fire of 20 rounds per minute is only permitted in exceptional cases when circumstances so dictate." I dont know how you can read this as being only a theoretical limitation to the rate of fire because you cant acheive it anyways. The way that is written sais to me they can achieve this rof at least for short periods of time but shouldnt unless there are exceptional circumstances. If you keep in mind how variable loading time for a round can be (1 round lap loaded and anotehr few already unfastened in their racks for quick access or even simply laid into the turret unfixed while in a defensive position) i dont see the possibility of the panther reaching 20rpm for 3-5 rounds as impossible.
  9. I was just about to correct my post i meant the vertical ammo in the hull which is far easier to access. Also limitations that never matter are not put into such reports.
  10. First i agree that 20rpm isnt really a practical rate of fire especially for longer durations. It is however a reasonable indicator that the loaders position isnt as bad as represented by the chieftain who btw also uses the hull storage for some reason to demonstrate how bad it is rather than the "ready" ammo in the turret. I didnt quote the entire passage because the question was if the panther or sherman in this instance had rate of fire limitations based on how quickly the gun can be loaded so in effect is the loaders position well enough desigened with the assertion being panther would be bad. The french having to write this limitation down does tell that it was at least possible for some period of time to achieve this rate of fire (if you dont have to switch targets see the soviet report). Also nice going immediately resorting to calling me a wehraboo for drawing a comparison based on the documents were given because it doesnt support the panther being terrible.
  11. 15rpm isnt exactly great in comparison when the french report has this to say about panther rof A rate of fire of 20 rounds per minute is only permitted in exceptional cases when circumstances so dictate.
  12. Yea they should really let their inf and ifvs carry 120mm smoothbore guns around.
  13. does that mean the airgap for the main charge is the distance from the first plate triggering the spaced rule to the first plate the main charge encounters?
  14. Yea youre right. though with this change ill redesign the nera elements anyways since its no longer necessary to have 2 different ones for the precursor and main charge.
  15. You just calculated 10° from vertical. So K2 is about 155mm Basic concept looks like this (picture obviously not to scale). So in short the above los is taken care of by the roofprotection.
  16. If you want to optimize for weight a single NERA light at 10°from horizontal followed by a single NERA heavy at 10° from horizontal will easily stopp all threats and for 1m^2 it weighs around 3 tons. you will need a build depth of a meter to reach good coverage though.
  17. not saying you did but the array i posted isnt primarily weight optimized
  18. its not that hard really. if i just take my array and remove the first and last RHA plates and switch my first NERA layer to ERA ill save quite some weight. i could also space my HHA plates more for better effect against KE But it would reduce the uparmouring potential and increase the armours bulk by quite a bit
  19. The armour sceme i came up with: 10mm RHA, 150mm cavity with NERA-light at 14° from horizontal, 30mm RHA, 205mm cavity with NERA-light at 10° from horizontal, 30mm RHA, 25mm HHA (5mm airgap for mounting), 25mmHHA (5mm airgap for mounting), 25mm HHA (5mm airgap for mounting), 30mmRHA Against ATGM 360mm precurser and 960mm main charge First RHA layer Pres = 360 -10 =350 First NERA light layer Pres = 350/2.5 - 1.5*74 = 29 Second RHA Pres = 29 -30 = -1 precurser defeated Second NERA light Pres = 960/3.3 -1.5*103 = 137 Third RHA Pres = 137 - 30 = 107 First HHA Pres = 107 -50 = 57 Second HHA Pres 57 - 50 = 7 Third HHA Pres = 7 -50 = -43 Main charge stopped Fourth RHA not even scratched Against 500mm KE First RHA layer Pres = 500 -10 = 490 First NERA light layer Pres = 490/1.07 - 1.5*74 = 347 Second RHA Pres = 347 - 30 = 317 Second NERA light Pres = 317/1.11 -1.5*103 = 162 Third RHA Pres = 162 - 30 = 132 First HHA Pres = 132 -50 = 82 Second HHA Pres 82 - 50 = 32 Third HHA Pres = 23 -50 = -27 KE penetrator stopped Fourth RHA not even scratched Im getting about 4.2 tons to cover 1m^2 Everything is inert so no problems with that. all special armour is in cavities and can be replaced easily. Armour array is only 445mm deep. Can easily be upgraded with additional armour.
  20. Just stack several HHA plates and encase them in RHA. You get whatever thickness you want.
  21. Which concepts are those and why would it prevent anyone from buying pumas?
  22. So either your radar detecting the rounds stays vulnerable or it cant tell when it has to reopen. To me this seems like its working perfectly fine since either the APS stays open, then the autocannon rounds destroy it, or it stays closed in which case the APS cant defeat the KEP.
  23. Yet 99% of combat troops dont carry pistols. seriously though this analogy really starts breaking down and the is a pistol usefull is an entirely different debate to be had. The problem i have with your argument is that youre arguing under the premise that the APS has to be destroyed to be rendered ineffective. With that premise i doubt anyone drastically disagrees with the idea of autocannons as APS killer. But noone accepts the premise that APS are infallable and there are a lot of easier ways of defeating non perfect (read: real) APS than adding an autocannon to an MBT.
