Tanks of the Commonwealth in WWII thread

@Jeeps_Guns_Tanks have you seen this photo before? I'm trying to figure out if it's a British Sherman. I think I see a WD number on the side, but I can't tell. It definitely doesn't look like an American registration number.

German gunners must have been confused when they never saw this mish-mash of early and late Sherman characteristics, or whatever those bogeys are supposed to be.

American research also founds that skirt armour that is 1/12th of the caliber of the shell can tear the armour piercing cap off on impact. German Schurtzen wasn't thick enough, but something like the spaced armour on a PzIII was.

Yes it's the same one, but the bogeys and tracks had rotted away completely so they were replaced. That is why the wheels are wrong for the M3.

Pasholok says that the counterweight was found inside the tank when it was recovered, that is why it was attached.

Not mine, sadly.

Yup, they shoved the M2 howitzer in there with very little modification, so it was hilariously off-balance. The solution was to make the gun mantlet enormous to compensate, which balanced the gun mount, but not the turret. The regular 75s definitely did not have this issue. Then the decision was made to drop the mechanism altogether since the tank would be firing in a forward arc from a standstill most of the time and it wasn't really required.

Thanks again. And I have yet another obscure question. Hunnicut says that the M4A4E1 couldn't traverse properly when the tank was at a slope of 30%, however this document says it was 30 degrees. 30% is something like 16 degrees. Which is right?

Interesting, thanks. What are those grid lines on the upper front plate? Surely not tiles of additional armour?

Also @Jeeps_Guns_Tanks you might have seen some nice high quality photos of Soviet Shermans floating around Facebook recently (one of them was the 936 pictured above in @LoooSeR's post, any chance you grabbed them? I can't find them in any group I could have likely seen them in.

Is there any way to tell if this is an M4 or an M4A2?

Bolshehuyev, to make it sound more authentic.
