   MOSCOW, March 11. / TASS /. New long-range guided missiles are designed for Russian attack helicopters following an operation in Syria. This was announced on Monday by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Defense.

   "Thanks to the Syrian experience, our helicopters received light, multifunctional guided missiles with a significantly increased range of action - up to 15 kilometers," the minister said.

   According to him, this allows them to be used without entering the zone of destruction of air defense weapons.

Hm... no name was reported of this new missile. "Hermes-A" or something instead of it? IDK, but 15 km range with SACLOS missile will be hard to do AFAIK.

   MOSCOW, March 20. / TASS /. The Russian modernized attack helicopter Mi-28NM will receive a new guided missile “Izdelie 305” with a range of over 25 km. This was reported to TASS on Wednesday by a source in the aircraft building industry.

   According to the interlocutor, the rocket will fly to the target according to the onboard inertial navigation system, information about the location of the target will be entered into the memory of the system at the time of launch from a helicopter. The Mi-28NM, in turn, will receive the coordinates of the target from its own means of detection or from a troop control system.

   In the final stage of the flight, the source explained, "the new missile will include a homing head to detect the target in a given area and defeat it." The helicopter will be able to receive the video signal from the rocket via a protected information and command radio line, the source added.

Spirit of Hermes-A is strong in this one. And a bit of Spike NLOS.

So why did CAPE push so strongly for buying additional fourth-generation jets?

The official pointed to two major factors. First was the need for additional capacity.

The average age of the F-15C/D fleet is 35 years, with some aircraft nearing the end of their service lives. FY20 budget documents note “SERIOUS structures risks, wire chafing issues, and obsolete parts” and add that “readiness goals are unachievable due to continuous structural inspections, time-consuming repairs, and on-going modernization efforts.”

CAPE considered accelerating procurement of the F-35, which in FY20 is limited to 48 units. However, its cost analysis — which pegs the cost of each F-15X at about $90 million for the aircraft and spares — found that F-35 operations and maintenance costs outweigh that of fourth-gen planes like the F-15, the official said.

The second argument in favor of buying new fourth-generation planes is that the national defense strategy establishes the need for both stealthy tactical aircraft that can penetrate into a contested zone, as well as planes with large payloads that can launch ordnance from standoff distances, the official said.

Out of the Air Force’s inventory, the F-15 in particular has that as a selling point. Of all the service’s fighters, it can carry the largest payload.

 

I think payload refers to weapons of a specific weight class, like what the F-15's centerline can carry, and not total weight because the F-35 can carry a pretty heavy payload if the wing pylons are allowed.

 

Also remember the upgrade for the B-52's wing pylons.

   Recently spotted Mi-28NM in Syria (northen Hama) was armed with 2 new missiles (smaller than Kh-25s, not fat enough to be a bomb or PTB fuel tank).

   S-13-T is capable of piercing through up to 6 meters of soil or one meter of reinforced concrete, covered with soil of thickness of 2-3 meters. The rocket can destroy up to 20 square meters of the runway.

   Compared with the previous version (S-13), the warhead consisting of two modules with fuses is used in the S-13-T. “This design allows you to increase the effectiveness of the munition, significantly increase the damaging effect".

It's a neat bit of design, but where are the fuel tanks going to go if the wing is full of that truss? I'm also doubtful of the wind turbine applications mentioned - those are FRP for good reason, the tensile stresses in the root are not to be trifled with

The US Air Force (USAF) plans to use the first two test flights of its X-60A GOLauncher1 (GO1) hypersonic flight research vehicle as capability demonstrations before using further test flights for experimentation, according to a key official.

Doug Dolvin, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) research leader for hypersonic flight research and experimentation, told Jane's on 25 April that the first test flight will perform sustained Mach 5 speeds while the second test flight will exceed Mach 6. The capability demonstrations, he said, will be used to validate system engineering.

Dolvin said the first two flight tests will be performed at the Cecil Spaceport in Jacksonville, Florida, and will fly south off the coast of Cape Canaveral. The USAF, he said, will have radar track and telemetry capture on the ground from the 45th Space Wing located at Cape Canaveral.

The USAF, Dolvin said, planned its first X-60A test flight for March 2020 and its second flight six months later. The goal, he said, is to deliver a much higher cadence level, perhaps four flights per year.

"This will enable us to be much more responsive," Dolvin said during AFRL's 2019 Lab Day at the Pentagon. "If one of the weapon system development programmes has an element they cannot address and falls through the gap, we can grab that technology and get to flight on the order of 4-6 months."

The X-60A can fly to a test condition, throttle back and hold that test condition, and engage in a different test condition all in the same flight. Dolvin said these test capabilities include the altitude, the Mach number, and aerothermal conditions. He said the X-60A's active control system also allows the air force to deliver different trajectories and conditions and induce different missions.
