A few inaccuracies in that article.

Currently the IDF's artillery is equipped with:

  • Howitzers, M109, 155mm L/39, manually loaded.
  • Guided missiles, Spike NLOS.
  • Precision Guided artillery, Accular 122mm (Romach).

The modernization of the artillery corps will be as such:

  • Howitzers, 155mm L/52, automatically loaded and semi-auto operated.
  • Missiles stay the same.
  • 122mm Accular increase in stocks.
  • 155mm artillery gets TopGun shell.

And a new branch of the military will be opened, currently known as the missile corps. It will consist of:

  • EXTRA rockets, 150km range.
  • Undetermined - Predator Hawk, 300km range, or LORA, 400km range.
  • Possibly an extra tier above that, and below the Jericho 1 SRBM.

No.

The Tamuz fired from the Pereh had a 25km range (and I guess Tsahal did not loose this capability with the Pereh withdrawal). Such a long range can be very useful.

The only point is that with such a range, the platoon must be part of artillery. It can no more belong to infantry or cavalry.

The flying path can interfere with air activity.

Rafael unveils Spike ER2

Development of the fifth-generation Spike ER2 stand-off missile system will be finalised by the end of 2018

https://www.janes.com/article/82673/rafael-unveils-spike-er2

16 km - overkill?

Re-read the article. It's 16km for aerial vehicles.

When fired from the ground, it reaches 10km. Much like when you fire a Spike LR 2 from an aerial vehicle it can get to 10km, but from the ground only to 5.5km.

I did a summary here:

Yes. Spike ER2 is heavy too and is the export name of ... Tamuz.

No. I will organize things a bit:

Spike SR - Tact.

Spike MR - Gil.

Spike LR - Gomed.

Spike ER - Perach Bar.

Spike NLOS - Tamuz.

Spike LR 2 - Gil 2.

Spike ER 2 - Perach Bar 2.

Note: Spike LR 2 is Gil 2, which was the name of the MR version of the past generation, however the MR and LR versions are practically the same. The only difference is their range, thus they were united under a single missile. Since the MR was the original version, it was decided to name the new LR version Gil, and not Gomed.

The ER is something you can mount on a tripod, or a light open cabin vehicle, but the NLOS is something you need a dedicated platform for, and cannot put on a tripod.

Is there any foreign customet who mounted Spike ER/ER2 on air platform? I know in Azerbaijan they mounted ER on vehicles (Kornet vs Spike ER, go go!)

You could check Wikipedia, but I know Colombia for a fact installed ER on their UH-60.

The ER version was however more popular in the coastal defense role, mounted on small patrol vessels.

At Army 2018 3 new rockets for modified Grad (Tornado-G) were shown for the first time.

The 9M538, 9M539 and 9M541 rockets are the standard ammunition of the MLRS 9K51M "Tornado-G"

From top to bottom:

9M538 with high-explosive warhead (more powerfull than Grad's rockets)

9M539 with detachable high-explosive warhead

 9M541 with cluster munitions (70 HEAT-fragmentation warheads)

All rockets have range of 20 km, which is less than 9M500 for Grad (which had 30-40 km max range)

A bit more about Spike ER2

Quote

Spike ER II can be launched from any existing missile system for Spike ER, land, sea and air. Its range is increased to 10 km for land/sea launch (compared to 8 km from Spike ER) and up to 16 km when launched from a helicopter. The missile is equipped with a powerful multifunctional warhead, which has high armor penetration and the ability to defeat fortified objects.

Like the Spike LR II, in the aviation version, the fiber optic cable in the guidance system is replaced by a radio channel. The use of the radio channel also eliminates the danger of cutting the cable with a helicopter rotor. If necessary, the helicopter can also use rockets with a cable, but only within the limits of its length, i.e. at a distance of 8 km. The radio channel is two-way, i.e. as it transmits the video image from the rocket to the carrier, as well as control commands from the carrier to the rocket.

Optical system of Spike ER II has two sensors, thermal imaging and daytime television high definition. It is able to detect targets at great distances, including camouflaged targets and targets in conditions of severe dust, including caused by the use of smoke interference. For this purpose, the guidance system performs a quick swap of observations between the sensors and simultaneously in real-time analyzes the information received from each of the sensors by superimposing the data on each other. This ability is a unique feature of the Spike 5th generation missiles.

"Rafael" notes that approximately 30 countries around the world bought about 30,000 ATGMs of the Spike family. More than 5,000 rockets of the family have already been fired in combat conditions and on exercises (including IDF).
