The real protagonist of this book is a Washington political establishment that has lost the ability to explain itself or its motives to people outside the Beltway.

Nixon in a dress?  Isn't that J. Edgar Hoover?

Clinton and Hoover sound like the could rap about their mutual love of paranoid secrecy together in this telling. But where Hoover was a ruthless and hyperefficient mastermind, Clinton comes of as ruthless and clueless.

Remember back after Gen Flynn was fired and Trump offered the job of National Security Advisor to Vice Admiral Bob Hayward?  It was reported by a friend of Hayward that he turned the job down because he thought it was "a shit sandwich."  The reasons for this assessment were, according to an article from Esquire:

"A Republican official told CNN that Harward made it a condition of taking the job that he could form his own team. In the end, he didn't feel that was the case. And a senior Republican familiar with the process added that "a question of clarity regarding the lines of authority" was central in Harward's decision. "I wouldn't call it a disagreement as much as questions that could not be resolved to his comfort level," the senior Republican said."

So, he turned down the job and former US tank commander and hero of 73 Easting Lt. Gen H.R. McMaster took the job.  And guess what.  Media reports are showing up that the job is indeed a shit sandwich, and that Steve Bannon is doing his best to get McMaster out of the picture.

Who's dumbass call was going back into Afghanistan?.

They never exactly left.  There have always been something like 10K NATO troops in Afghanistan, mostly US.  That was the lowest that NATO troop strength in Afghanistan ever got.

Basically, when Obama announced that the US would be leaving X country, what he really meant was "leaving behind just enough troops to man the permanent bases there, and avoiding combat with standard units enough that it stays out of the news, and conducting most of the combat with SOCOM raids or drone strikes."

Hey, you do what you gotta do to win elections.
