Would I be making a mistake if I used a 15” handguard with a 14.5” barrel and pinned 3 prong flash hider?

You would be very close to making a mistake, yes.

Typically you want to back off the flash hider by about an inch. So for a 14.5" barrel, that means 13" handguard.

That’s what I was thinking, I have a 15” BCM handguard and don’t want to buy another if I don’t have to.

Yeah that was the original plan, I have a 20” government profile barrel and every now and then I get an itch to replace it with something shorter.

14.5s are baller as fuck tho. If you're willing to buy a 13" rail, I'd definitely go that route.

Tested some ammo today. @Ulric, let's compare some Prvi 7.62x39 to some Wolf 7.62x39.

Both are softpoint loads that I've purchased. The wolf is cheaper, but how much better is the Prvi? Does it really justify the cost?

At the range, I unboxed the Prvi and got a laugh.

Look how dumpy these things are!

So much room for activties.

I had my doubts after seeing the bullets. These loadings are both 125 grains.

First, let's see how the Wolf did. Five shot group. 100 yards, 4x scope, Ruger American.

Some drift. I shot a few 5-shot groups, and they all looked about like this.  Nothing special, but decently accurate for blaster-fodder.

And the Prvi?

Whew that's a bit better.

Dumpy round or no, it's a bit more accurate. I'm happy with it.

Do you really feel that much difference between a 14.5 and a 16?

For me at least there just doesn't feel like much of a difference at all.

Then again with where I habitually run my stock adjustment I'm probably still shooting the shorter gun comparatively.

Yeah, they feel significantly different to me.

The balance shift is definitely nice.

The reason I asked sturgeon the question I did is because I'm pretty sure I run my stock multiple clicks further inward than he does and thus likely get most of the same benefits from a 16 as he would from a 14.5.

Me and the people I shoot with are basically midgets/ the size of people who aren't quite old enough to drive yet though so our experiences and preferences sometimes diverge from those of full sized humans LOL.

I'm not sure about that.

I'm 5'10" and stocky, but I've always preferred short stocks on rifles.

Interesting, thanks for the clarification.

Incidentally I get a kick out of your  gun setup in that picture, it's the reverse mullet of AR15's... Gucci in the front parts bin in the rear.

To be clear, I get exactly why you did it that way. It's just neat to see.

So, it looks like I'll be able to repurpose chambered and chrome lined AR barrel blanks for the Galil build. It should be pretty straight forward: turn the original threads down, move the shoulder forward to set headspace, then rethread for Galil action. After that it would be the usual profile, crown, thread, time, gas port, extractor cut.

I just need to make sure that the relief cut diameter on the barrel tenon threads isn't too much smaller than the minor diameter on the Galil threads.

I thought you had a barrel already.
