This thing is tiny and has an insane steering system.

 

Somehow this thing is even smaller. Those twin barrels are for a flamethrower of some sort, because the Italians were world-class optimists.

Bovington also has one, so it must have been a good enough idea to warrant making more than one of them

Yup, from the era before they went savage anything at all happened.

 

As to the Italians, I think you overestimate their threshold for 'good idea'.

The Crusader is very interesting. The 6-pounder versions had the MG turret removed to make room for more ammo, but this isn't a 6-pounder armed Crusader. I wonder if the 6-pounder was replaced or if the turret was somehow lost.

There are plenty of pictures of the crusader mark 2 without the mini-turret.

 

I think they took it off in the desert (it was a waste of a machinegun) or it was removed as part of an official upgrade.

The twin-mount on the Italian tankette is normally for a pair of LMGs, with the flame thrower it looked like this, fully kitted out:
