House makes a compelling point on why Stalin allied with Hitler. That is that the alliance freed the Soviets from having to worry about immediate conflict with the Germans while they would rebuild their military. It wasn't that Stalin wanted to align himself with Hitler, it is that Stalin needed to in order to create an army that could defeat Hitler when war eventually broke out.
