Belesarius
http://www.janes.com/article/51269/arjun-mbts-out-of-action-due-to-spares-shortage Almost half of their Arjun tanks are down for repairs.
Priory_of_Sion
Not really surprised by this piece of news. I would bet the T-90s would be given a higher priority to spare parts and maintenance than the Arjuns. India doesn't really seem to try that hard at having a military. Walter_Sobchak
Actually, it's more like 75% are out of commission. Here is the thing I don't understand about the Arjun. You would think that they would have selected the MTU 883 engine, just like Israel did for the Merk 4 or like Korea with the K2. Or at the very least, the MB-873 from the Leo 2. But no, they use the MTU MB-838 Ka 501 diesel. This is essentially a more powerful version of the engine in the Leopard 1. So basically, they got MTU's oldest engine design, gussied up to pull a bunch of extra power out of it. Now, it might be a good engine, I don't really know for sure. But still, you would think they would have gone with something a little newer.
Khand-e
The problem there is you assume anything to do with the entire Arjun program would be logical though. And not "a Program that's spent 40 years only to produce one of the shittest 3rd generations MBTs of all time."

And not "a Program that's spent 40 years only to produce one of the shittest 3rd generations MBTs of all time." Indeed. Their original idea for the Arjun (way back in the late 70's) was to make their own licensed version of the AVCR-1360. This was essentially the engine developed for the MBT-70 and the General Motors XM1 prototype that lost to the Chrysler entry. They couldn't get more than 500 HP out of the ones they built, even though it was supposed to be a 1500 HP engine. So they gave up and went with a foreign produced engine. Collimatrix
Didn't they have issues with the electronics as well?
Walter_Sobchak
I think they have had problems with everything. LoooSeR
Meplat
Not to spin off topic, but their internal small arms development has been a comedy of errors as well. A case of "par for the course" perhaps?

Meplat
Well, if HK can't get it right, how do you expect the Indians to do better? H&K -had- it right, for a time. Then they apparently found some really good mushrooms, or something. Sturgeon

Scolopax
There's a Mk. II as well, but I'm not sure if it completely solves all the issues.
Mike E
It doesn't solve the issues, it makes them worse. Basically the thing has no mobility, and rumor says an attempt to improve the suspension has failed.
Tied
That was one way of fixing some of the Arjun's problems. Looks like they slapped one of those boring dime a dozen Leopard 2 style compostie armor box turrents to a T-72b3 hull and called it a day new tank

Indian EX Tank. It's an Arjun turret slapped onto a Ajeya (T-72m) hull.
LoooSeR
I think French delegation in 90s proposed a project to UVZ - Leclerc turret mounted on T-72/T-90 chassis. Maybe Indians should ask France to do this project for them, especially when new powerpack is available.
