Hard to say what was source of problem, investigation is not over as i understand.

There are procedures and tools for determining fatigue of critical components.  There's a way to use X-rays to examine aluminum structures for micro-cracks before they can grow into a serious problem, for instance.

 

Be interesting to hear what the problem is here.  Most likely, they'll figure it out, fix it, and have them all back in the air.  Similar things happened to USAF F-15s a while back due to problems with fatigue on the vertical stabs.

I thought the F-15 breakups were due to longeron failures (or was there some other issue I'm not remembering)?

A bit misleading article, as though it's a prop driven bird those props are spun by large turboshaft engines.
