No idea. 152 mm HE can do mobility kill, but it can't destroy modern tank reliably. Although i would like to see results of Merkava 3/4 meeting with such HE shell.

If you want to get yourself on several watchlists, Hezbollah has an old piece on their website where they report on taking out a Merkava III with a large black powder device.

May interest you.

Would a merkava respond particularly differently for any reason?

DId you saw Merkava hull without NERA? It have a lot of gaps, and armor itself is not really good. Merkava 4 hull is closer to skeleton in that regard. And i don't think that NERA works as well as armor-grade steel against big HE.

That turret front hit we see in the first couple of pictures must have at least jammed the traverse - combine that with the damage to tracks preventing the tank pivoting, and there's not much it can do anymore

4PzXNeS5Rt8.jpgNote gaps in side armor in the middle and near rear part too. Add here a fact that this armor is not so thick.

Yes. But those holes are not the only one in Merkava hull/turret and that is a problem, when your tank is hit by HE. In fact, i am really interested how Merkava's add-on armor would work against big caliber HE, because they are just T-72-like NERA with textolite plastic.

Got the associated report today, not super exciting. It could have been way more exciting because originally it contained comparison values with M1A1 and Leopard 2A4, but the fuckers at the national archives blacked those out before releasing it. Russian secrets aren't as important, it seems. :|

Will post on ~my blog~ once I get the relevant parts translated.

Well, that could have been a bomb on Russian forums, if it was released. :(

So what is left in it? Cent and/or Strv.103?

Clearly the archives staff were paid off to hide the shame of inferior Western tanks losing out to glorious socialism.

This is a puzzler:

"Since every gear on the T-80U has a fixed turn radius, the tank has to be driven on the lowest gear to be able to make the tight turns, and it gets a result on par with the strv 104 despite being capable of much higher speeds."

The only way the gear that the tank is in would affect turn radius is if the T-80U has a double or triple differential steering system with a single-speed steering drive.  That would be exactly equivalent to what the centurion has.  Why are they complaining about it being primitive?  It would only compare unfavorably with the steering on the abrams and leo 2.
