After USSR collapse, only 6 BMP-3s were left in Ukraine, 2 of which were sold to US for evaluation in 2008-2009. 2 were spotted in battle in early part of conflict in Eastern Ukraine. It is reported that 1 was damaged and needs repair.

1) there are ways, but they just decided to be like T-72B mod1989 

2) Usual 3 sections of ERA modules like on T-80U.

All T-72 variants with additional turret armor including the T-90A, lack the additional armor on the front around the mantlet. None really knows why. 

I guess the Ukrainians just liked the way it looks.
