This picture really illustrates the amount of "packaging" around the AGT-1500 turbine in the powerpack.  The actual turbine is quite small:

 

 

The little round cylinder is the turbine proper, and yes, it makes 1,500 HP.  In fact, It was downrated to 1,500 HP; the engine can put out 2,000+ when it's not limited.

 

Much of the bulk comes from the air filters and the recuperator.  The T-80's turbine lacks a recuperator, which makes it more compact (the GTD-1250 turbine is also more compact than the AGT-1500, mostly because it uses centrifugal compressors instead of axial ones):

 

But this increases fuel consumption.

Man, haven't seen these in a long time. They are all out at the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin California. Did lots of 30 day cycles out there. They have a few real models of eastern bloc vehicles out there as well. I remember getting chased around by a real BMP once.
