Collimatrix
A cutaway showing the radar installation in the intake spike of the MiG-21MF. The intake spike of the MiG-21 has many purposes. In addition to housing the radar it generates oblique shock waves that slow down the air feeding into the intake when the plane is going supersonic. The spike can move back and forth a few inches to adjust the shock wave location over a range of mach numbers.
renhanxue
Viggens in the field (kinda literally in that first one). First one's most likely from the 70's, second from some big field maneuver in the late 80's IIRC. Collimatrix
A three-view of the Grumman XF10F carrier-borne, swing-wing fighter. Lost introduced me to this strange beast last night on TS. Note that the pivots of the wings actually slide forwards when the wings sweep back. This was a feature to compensate for the movement of the center of lift when the wings are swept back. Mass-produced swing wing aircraft have relied on simpler means of controlling the CL shift. In the F-111 automatic pitch controls re-trimmed the aircraft for the pilot. In the F-14 small pop-out canards helped to offset the change. In the MiG-23... they just made the fuselage really long so at least the shift was happening at the end of a really large mechanical disadvantage and therefore wasn't too abrupt. Tied
On this note, the B-25/PBJ variants with the 75mm. It was basically the Sherman's gun, handloaded just like in the tank, and it was apparently pretty much impossible to hit anything with it. I read a story from a crew member about how they basically considered it dead weight, and would rely on the .50s instead, only firing the 75mm for the hell of it once in a while. He said that the one time they managed to hit a target with it (a ship of some sort), their first reaction was shock, followed by an instinct not to tell anybody about it for fear that the brass might think that the cannon was a good idea. Belesarius
Good thing, too, because Curtiss was awful. I just read about them shipping known-to-be faulty engines. In wartime that comes pretty damned close to treason.
