It's a bold strategy when you think of it, make a vehicle so goddamned hideous enemy fire doesn't even want to hit it, let alone can hit it.

Or are we gonna see Joes tooling around in Chevy pickups like when the Humvee was introduced?

Which would be kind of awesome since I always wanted one of those surplus Army trucks as a kid for inexplicable reasons.

You're thinking of a CUCV.  And for the most part they were decent.  They did have issues with the electrical system, and being an aspirated Diesel had all the sparkling onroad performance of a lithium addled geriatric.  But for a no-bullshit truck, they are hard to beat and made more sense as a utility vehicle than the HMMWV.

There were a few series of CUCV after the common 6.2L versions.  Three IIRC, all some flavor of GM, four if you count the Dodge M880 series.

 

But to ask the important questions, were they less ugly then the Oshkosh JLTV?

Think of any early 1980s Chevy truck. Now rattle can it green, brown and black. Put on orange emergency lights or have it carry something vaguely Army surplus. Or just find a Prepper with like six of em parked at their compound in various stages of disrepair.

Yep. Still better than the Oshkosh offering.
