HMS Conqueror (S48) -  The only nuclear powered submarine to sink an enemy warship in combat, Where it sunk the ARA General Belgrano with 2 torpedo hits during the Falklands war. All political controversies aside, one thing that for sure sucks is that prior to being the ARA General Belgrano, It was formerly the Brooklyn class light cruiser USS Phoenix in USN service that proved to be a hero at the battle of Pearl Harbor and the events immediately following, among other duties during WW2 before being sold to Argentina in 1951.

USS Halibut (SSGN-587) - until the Ohio-class conversions, Halibut was the only SSGN to see service with the US Navy. She was converted to an SSN, but her primary claim to fame was performing submarine espionage. Her exploits include the tapping of Soviet underwater telephone lines (Operation Ivy Bells) and the initial survey of K-129. She was equipped with ROVs for inspection of the ocean floor and a diving chamber that was disguised as a prototype DSRV. She was decommissioned in 1976 and scrapped in 1994.

Some of the last known pictures of the Yamato's sister ship, the Musashi before being sunk during the battle of Leyte Gulf under intense sustained air attack. The battle itself would end in a decisive rout in favor of the Allies.

So, fun fact, the side and guard rail of the USS Missouri are actually dented in one particular location, this was caused by a Zero that did a Kamikaze run into it. They never bothered to fix it as it did no noticeable damage aside from cosmetic.

Another intriguing thing is, said aircraft was actually photographed moments before it happened, the dead pilot actually ended up on the deck but was buried at sea afterwards.

Hey. The actual Divine Wind was trying to come to Japan's aid. It's not his fault the United States were using oil powered steel ships!

It even worked, a little, since the first one sunk like three destroyers, and both cost millions in damage to the ships. So of the larger ships took damage from them. If I recall right, the Iowa burned up a shaft bearing when one of her outboard propellers came out of the water.

This is like that part of the bible (Judges 1:19) where God's wrath is turned aside by iron chariots.

Moral of the story - mankind is working up to pimp-slapping the cosmic powers.

I got to climb over a World War 2 landing craft up here in Alaska. It has been donated to a summer camp for kids up here on Lake Aleknagik or so I was told and is in the process of "restoration" as evidenced by someone's idea of the "machine guns" mounted on it.

A lot of these old landing craft were acquired and are used to transport cargo and fuel to remote Alaska villages since there is no cheap way to get stuff to the bush.
