Russian Intelligence Destroys Oil Tankers on the Iraqi-Turkish Border

Russian intelligence has spotted up to 12,000 tankers and trucks on the Turkish-Iraqi border, the General Staff of Russia’s armed forces reported. “The [aerial]imagery was made in the vicinity of Zakho (a city in Iraqi Kurdistan), there were 11,775 tankers and trucks on both sides of the Turkish-Iraqi border,” Lieutenant-General Sergey Rudskoy told journalists on Friday. “It must be noted that oil from both Iraq and Syria come through this [Zakho] checkpoint,” General Rudskoy said, according to RT.

Heavy-duty trucks loaded with oil continue to cross the Turkish-Syrian border as well, Rudskoy said. At the same time, the number of tankers on the northern and western routes used for transporting oil from Syria is declining, the general added. “According to satellite data, the number of oil tankers moving through the ‘northern route’ towards the refinery in the [Turkish] city of Batman has considerably diminished,” Rudskoy said, adding that the number of tankers using the ‘western route,’ between the Turkish cities of Reyhanli [on the Syrian border]and the city of Iskenderun, has decreased to 265 vehicles.

The Russian Air Force in Syria has destroyed about 2,000 tankers used by the Takfiri militants for oil transportation. In the last week, Russian warplanes eliminated 17 convoys of oil tankers and a number of installations used by terrorists for oil extraction and processing.

The Russian Air Force’s effective strikes in Syria have forced the terrorists to look for new routes for crude oil transportation. Today, tankers loaded with oil in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, under  ISIL (so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Levant) control, are moving towards the Iraqi border in the direction of Zakho and Mosul.

“However, despite a considerable diversion, the finishing point of the trafficking route remains Turkey,” Rudskoy said.

Syrian Army captures Ayn Sharouq in northern Latakia

The Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard is still advancing in the Latakia Governorate’s northern countryside, despite the Turkish Army’s repeated attempt to boost the Islamist rebel forces with Turkmen fighters from inside their own country.

On Friday night in Jabal Al-Turkmen (Turkmen Mountains), the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Latakia City, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), and the Syrian Resistance – imposed full control over the small hilltop village of Ayn Sharouq after a series of firefights with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

In addition to capturing Ayn Sharouq in Jabal Turkmen, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies advanced towards the strategic hilltop of Talat Bayt Ablaq, which is located along the Turkish border near another hilltop known as Tal Marran.

As a result of this advance, the Syrian Armed Forces have once again secured the imperative Armenian town of Kassab, leaving the Islamist rebels in a poor position along the vast Turkish border with the Latakia Governorate’s northern countryside.

Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces are engaged in a violent battle with the Free Syrian Army’s “1st Coastal Brigade” and Jabhat Al-Nusra at the Al-Sayyid Mountains that are located to the north of the recently captured mountain chain known as “Jabal Al-Nuba”.

Islamist rebels suffer heavy casualties in a failed bid to capture Bashkoy in northern Aleppo

On Christmas day in the Aleppo Governorate’s northern countryside, the Islamist rebels from Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen launched a massive assault on the National Defense Forces (NDF) frontline positions at the village of Bashkoy in order to build a large buffer-zone around their main supply route from Turkey to the provincial capital. Initially, Jabhat Al-Nusra and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen were successful, capturing several points outside of the village and inside its eastern flank; however, their success did not last long as the Syrian Armed Forces eventually forestalled the Islamist advance and pushed back the encroaching enemy combatants attempting to infiltrate into Bashkoy’s residential area.

According to a military source inside of Bashkoy, the National Defense Forces and Kataebat Al-Ba’ath (Al-Ba’ath Battalions) killed over 25 enemy combatants from Jabhat Al-Nusra and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen, including “Abu Waheed Shami”, “Abu Al-Bara’a”, Mohammad Al-Homsi, “Abu ‘Utayba”, “Abu Malek”, “Abu Hussam”, “Abu Al-Jabbar ‘Abdel-Rahman”, and “Abu ‘Abdullah Al-Rustom”.

In addition to losing over 25 enemy combatants, Jabhat Al-Nusra and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen also lost 7 armored vehicles that were mounted with a variety of anti-aircraft machine guns; this arsenal also included two tanks that were destroyed by the Syrian Armed Forces before nightfall on Christmas day.
