Rebel attack in Aleppo city turns disastrous due to Syrian Army ambush

 

 

  Last night at 3am Damascus time, rebel forces launched a major assault from Al-Rashiddeen district towards the al-Assad suburb in south Aleppo city. However, despite over 100 mortar shells striking Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in and around al-Assad district, Islamist rebels were astonishingly repelled within just 2 hours. 

 

   It now turns out that local SAA commanders had been informed of the upcoming night raid and subsequently ordered their troops to stay awake during the night while they were also handed infrared weaponry shortly prior to the attack. 

 

   This is the 2nd time this week that the SAA has repelled a rebel offensive in Aleppo due to leaks, thus suggesting that the Syrian Government may have infiltrated some rebel groups. In total, a military source in Aleppo estimated some 20-25 rebel fighters were killed while approximately 70 insurgents suffered all from minor to critical injuries. 

 

   The death toll uncertainty is due to rebel forces retrieving some of their comrades upon their hastily defeat. However, tens of heavily injured insurgents and corpses still lay scattered on the battle ground as we speak. 

 

   The attack was lead by hundreds of fighters of the al-Nusra Front, Jaish Al-Mujahideen, Ahrar Al-Sham, the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Jabhat Al-Shamiya, and Nouriddeen Al-Zinki. Most of the casualties were reportedly inflicted upon militants of Jaish Al-Mujahideen and Nouriddeen Al-Zinki. 

 

   Al-Masdar’s source in Aleppo was unwilling to reveal the government death toll for “security reasons” but said they were very few as the SAA conducted a well-prepared ambush which entailed letting rebels enter some buildings just to bring them in a vulnerable fighting position. 

 

   After tonight’s clashes, Islamist rebels have been forced to return to their initial positions at the Al-Rashiddeen district.
