How effective has capturing/killing insurgent leaders been?  The current wisdom in the US is that insurgencies don't rely very much on individual leaders, and that killing them doesn't slow down the movement very much.  But then the current wisdom in the US on a lot of things is total horseshit, so I am always curious to see it empirically tested.

Depend on organisation and what kind of leader this organisation have. For example, in 2014 SyAAF managed to kill all leadership of 1 pretty big group of islamists in Aleppo province. After that this organisation was plagued by series infighting between several warlords, that were trying to take over whole power in that group, i forgot how it was called (did a post on this subject in T110 thread long time ago).

More recent examples - Zakhrar Alloush and Jaish Al-Islam in Eastern Ghouta. After he was killed several islamists organisations inside of Eastern Ghouta started fights between each other for control of income, territories, etc., which was and still used by SAA for their advantage.

There are opposite examples - Nusra front and Jaish Al-Fateh, those noble fighters have their actual leadership outside of Syria, so killing those in Syria will not affect Nusra Front, Ash-Sham and Al-Fateh as much as others. ISIS have a little different structure, as i understand, it is more like an ideology-based state rather than group of people with similar interests, headed by some 'charismatic' person (like Jaish Al-Fateh).

Thats why VKS and SyAAF tried and killed Jaish Al-Fateh leader, while they don't bother killing Nusra and others similar jihadists leadership as much as with Alloush.
